Protector - Day of Vigilance. Staff Debriefing and Comments
...Calendar? Twitter? Those would be AWESOME if, you know, I looked at the calendar (what calendar?) or was on Twitter...
|
There are multiple methods setup for accessing it - even adding it to your favorite calendaring method. If you need assistance, let me know.
...but I need a way to know about it that works a little better for me. Your "but let me get defensive and show all the ways I tried" just adds negativity to what I was trying to say, which makes my response go negative, and that's not getting us anywhere.
|
What I got from your reply - and pardon the sarcasm, but I am a sarcastic person - was: "I don't care if the invitation was dropped on my doorstep, I wanted you to open it and read it to me."
I may be misinterpreting your words, because that's what sometimes happens in forums. But I detected entitlement and that led me to think you were casually setting aside the man hours (hundreds?) involved in getting this thing done because it didn't work out for you personally.
Now, I've had a great subway and bus commute shoving people around and pulling queue jumpers out of the way, those scumbags, so I've had some time to vent and get some the anger out of my system. Enough of that.
I'll be trying to give you the benefit of doubt from now on, so I'll conclude with: might I respectfully suggest you try harder?
To me, that would seem the most logical option, and the one involving less overall effort, since the alternative is even more volunteer hours being spent in *maybe* reaching those who have time constraints, or lack of interest in what's happening outside their immediate circle of friends. It doesn't sound all that productive to me, and I'd hate to impose that on anyone who's already giving up their time so that others can have more fun. I hope this makes sense.
...I wonder if you could find a way to make use of an idea like an old fashioned "calling tree."...
|
Since apparently no one took me up on that, I'd say your suggestion here makes a lot more practical sense. I like it a lot.

I guess next time my Warshade and his Mekman pet will have to try harder....
(Yes even if that does mean having Nylonus <fire blaster> take on M I Abrhams brute.) |
And we were sooo close to letting you win that couples contest just for the sheer moxie of trying. Sadly, we had to follow the rules or chaos would have ensued.
One of the most enjoyable things of the RV event was watching you in the chat channels. If I weren't painfully aware of my own Controlleresque squishyness, I would have tried to help.

You guys have issues you need to work out in a forum that isn't so public. My own outbursts have taught me this lesson enough times, I would have hoped somebody else could learn from my very public mistakes.
If you're not mad enough to pummel each other over it, though, and don't feel like shrugging off the jabs and stings surrounding your otherwise decent information, then kindly shut up your bickering over it.
I've got a lot of respect for you, Stale. Not sure where our schism started, exactly, Witch, but I've still got respect for you, too. Watching you lose your heads over a couple subtle backhands, though, is more than a little aggravating, and this isn't the place for you to vent your issues.
If you've got something to say to me over this, send it in a PM. I'm sorry if I'm being overly blunt, and maybe I should have also said this in PMs, but there is a message everybody needs to see: Keep the fighting between you and the person you're fighting with. Making a public spectacle of it is only going to hurt everybody involved.

Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.
I hope I'm not about to get run over from two different directions here....
But I think a couple people are getting way more worked up than is really called for.
Frosty is saying, I think, that not everyone is active on the forums and suggesting that we should look for ways that depend less on the forums and easily overlooked messages like channel MoTD. He's NOT saying that someone (who would probably end up being me) should take him by the hand and lead him around.
Stalemate is saying that he worked really hard on this, and did everything he could think of to promote this.
So, yes... there is a real lack of methods to spread information to those who do not frequent the forums that is frustrating to those who are trying to plan and promote events.
However, that's the situation we have. So... there is a need for a better way to spread this information. My suggestion is going to be to find a better way to REFER people to the forums.
To be fair, it's pretty easy to spend 5 minutes or less once a week to see what's going on with the servers you play on via the forums... I had a couple of friends who I never see on the board that knew about Day of Vigilance just by quickly looking at threads in this section. If it's important to you to know what's going on, it can't hurt to spend a couple of minutes and check every now and then. You don't even have to post.
Okay, the long and short of it.
1: They put it on various global channel MOTDs.
2: They put it here in the forums.
3: They put it on the Protector Calendar.
4: They put it on the Facebook feed.
Now where else, EXACTLY were they supposed to put this to make it more easy for you to access the information?
Were they supposed to simply randomly spam every in-game global with the announcement (and get booted from the game for TOS violations)?
Were they supposed to randomly spam every channel and zone dozens of times a day just to make sure they happened to hit one while you were on and in-zone? And consequently run the same risk of TOS violation?
They'd already covered all the places they could easily broadcast the information to.
I understand your frustration at being excluded because you didn't know about it. But, realistically, what more would YOU have done in their place?
Also, "I don't want to go here/there" isn't an excuse either.
that could have had me riding thru all the zones on a horse shouting about it make that a unicorn. OH that leaves a trail of rainbows! Lets just leave it as there's always room for improvement. NOBODY is perfect . and i think it went off pretty well.
SO back to ideas
I vote for Sooner's "calling tree" idea. I vote for ppl who have deviant art pages that are city of hero themed write journals advertising it. Be excited about it and go blog about it somewhere. I even told two of my friends that are EX coh ppl about it hoping to get them back to it. And you know what if you talk about it with others in open channels it's not really spamming. we could do already written dialogue in broadcast between two or more ppl that talk about how excited they are about the event. Saying what they are really looking forward to. Say i meet up with Kyo and in broadast be like "OMG HI KYO!!! I hope to see you at my CC contest next sat at 9pm!" and she by like. "HI layla! oh yeah? what's the theme? Oooh are u going to give away another doll?" and so forth.. then we go skipping off to do a tf or something. the "skipping is very important"

I didn't even say, though those words have been put in my mouth, that the methods he used were bad. I believe they were very efficient in getting the word out, to most folks. But I am not most folks, and I was trying to find a way to get more involved, and get people like me involved. Instead, I was attacked by the mob like I kicked someone's puppy, a fact I will certainly remember the next time a call is made for community involvement.
For a couple of you that are asking, "how can you not check the forums/twitter/facebook/whatever," let me explain.
1. When I am in my working season, I don't even get to log in-game but once every two or three weeks most of the time. The people I run with that many of you trust (Sooner, T, Kid) will verify that. So when I can log on, I log on to play, not to read the forums. If I have two hours after two weeks away, I play for two hours, not play for 90 mins and forum surf the other 30. I pay to play, not read the forums.
2. I cannot access the forums from work. So it's not like I can surf the forums at work and
catch up during the day - I'm locked out. The same goes for FB. I miss things.
3. When I can play, it's usually (not always, but usually) after 9pm Central time until about midnight. I don't want to single her out, but Layla is a perfect example when she mentioned that she talked about it all the time. But I don't ever remember Layla even being on at 10pm on a Weds. The last time I ran with her was a lunchtime task force at like 11am one stray day that I was off (it was a Croatoa TF).
To be perfectly honest, this thread trainwrecked in a way that, to me, is unintentionally hilarious. Grey (who, let me stop here, and I hope he reads this, is a champ in this thread, and the next time I see him I'll tell him so) posted about some confusion, I pop in to agree that it was confusing, say that stuff looked like fun and ask how players like me could be more involved, and the next thing I know some of you are grabbing the torches and pitchforks - "He's not on Twitter? Burn him!" My first post was polite and respectful; I even admitted in a later post that some of the blame was on me (I believe - Oh look, there it is - that I said not checking the MoTD's regularly was my fault).
So, here's what this whole thing looks like from my end:
Witch: Hey, Grey's right, there was some confusion, but I'd like to be involved next time, how can you get people like me better informed?
Stale: What's your problem, I have twitter and a calendar, would you like me to tattoo it on your forehead?
Witch: That's not what I meant, but if you want to get nasty we can go there.
(Voices of Reason) - Let's do it this way.
Witch: You all make good points. That might work.
(Dogpile): OMGWTFBBQ, you don't read the forums? All the work he did! The calendar! The Horror!
Witch: This is community? It's no wonder I don't check the forums.
Witch makes a good point since he didnt see me . So for the next one I suggest we kinda get an idea when the ppl involved play and see if we can set up shifts of dropping info at different times of day. so we dont miss ppl that can only play here or there but would make the effort to log on for a special event. and i'll admit it . i didnt look at the calendar either or the tweets :P I do know there are some ppl that just dont like the forums. I was one of them til Stone forced me on here.Does that mean i can have a dogpile too i prefer a pillow fight myself! I know we dont all have the time but if we have more ppl involved with getting the word out it will take less of each of our personal time * sooner's calling tree* I now have an image of a bunch of dolls piled ontop of witch's doll Witch you have to enter my next contest so i can make a doll of you giggles madly.

Seems like I know a Dark Melee/Dark Armor/Ghost Widow/Void scrapper who is at least as dark. And she punches things.
I don't know why I'm even bothering to come back to this thread, but it appears that either I was unclear in my original post, or I need to clarify. I am not "frustrated" at missing out, Hyper, I heard about a couple of events I thought were cool after the fact, and as I stated in my very first post, from the limited amount I did see on the forums and asked about, I was under the mistaken impression that this was an all-day RP event. I was willing to volunteer my time at the next one, assuming that a better way could be found to reach players who find out about game stuff in a non-traditional manner. That's all.
I didn't even say, though those words have been put in my mouth, that the methods he used were bad. I believe they were very efficient in getting the word out, to most folks. But I am not most folks, and I was trying to find a way to get more involved, and get people like me involved. If you'd like to be involved, check the forums once a week to see what's going on. If you took all the time you spent writing these comments and spread it out over the course of a month, you could easily spend a couple of minutes once a week to check for upcoming events on this board, that's why it's here and there's nothing stopping you from using it.
Ok, listen... when someone is trying to point out that not everyone uses the forums - which IS a true statement... in fact, I suspect that it's a pretty small percentage of people who use the forums...
Anyway, when someone is saying that there's a problem with promoting an event via the forums because not everyone uses the forums... the answer is NOT "use the forums."
There's a lot of reasons why people might not want to or not be able to access the forums regularly. Instead of dismissing the problem, how bout offering a solution?
Solution # 5
this is probably stupid but i randomly look at ppl's bios when i'm next to a stranger in WW or waiting on a raid and so forth. why not put at the bottom of ur bio about the event about to happen . For those weird ppl like me :P * i'm not a stalker I swear*
your turn :P

Once again: If you spread all this time you spent typing responses to this thread over the course of the last month and spent the same amount of time reading what's going on, you wouldn't have missed anything.

I'm really digging the suggestions to encourage event promotion, and rest these will make the To Do list for next time (*winks knowingly at Sooner).
And Witchfrost: let's call a truce.
We don't like each other. Our personalities don't mesh. We have vastly different views on what the Protector community should / can do in regards to encouraging participation. Let's agree to disagree.
Heck, let me put my money where my mouth us and take a cue from the generous team of people I had the privilege of serving as coordinator these past months in respecting others despite their differences.
Here's what I propose: I'll take you up on that offer to contribute and work with you on an event of your choice. Let's see what we can come up with.
I often got to bed rather late, even on weekdays. Furthermore my vacation time is coming up, I can accommodate your schedule. Let's see what we can do to put this past us stubborn, opinionated SOBs who always think we have the best perspective on things.
There are multiple ways to contact me already, but you can use the forum messaging system and we can go from there.
NOTE - to the Misfits TF participants: I have received a list from Lorax for the inf you are slated to receive, according to your level of overall participation throughout the day. There are just a few loose ends to tie up and it will be mailed out to you in game. Thanks for your patience.

Yo dawg I heard you like criticism so we put some criticism in your criticism thread and you got pissy.

What Grumble said. . .
I participated in the all Kheld TF. Was fun. Glad that we were able to break into 2 teams. Made it a bit competive to see who would finish first. Was surprised that the team I was on did finish first.
Trivia was fun. . .Would have liked to have seen it done more throught out the day.
Enjoyed watching the CC in Pocket D in the evening. It was fun to participate in the Couples CC that was held in the morning. I guess next time my Warshade and his Mekman pet will have to try harder.
Rasta's event and the RV end event were fun. And once again proved why I don't PVP. I am just not good at it. But it didn;t stop me and I tried to make it fun and entertaining for everyone. (Yes even if that does mean having Nylonus <fire blaster> take on M I Abrhams brute.)
