Protector - Day of Vigilance. Staff Debriefing and Comments
Some people that I respect encouraged me to come back and work this out, so here's my final thoughts on the matter.
I'm really digging the suggestions to encourage event promotion, and rest these will make the To Do list for next time (*winks knowingly at Sooner).
And Witchfrost: let's call a truce. We don't like each other. |
Our personalities don't mesh. We have vastly different views on what the Protector community should / can do in regards to encouraging participation. Let's agree to disagree. Heck, let me put my money where my mouth us and take a cue from the generous team of people I had the privilege of serving as coordinator these past months in respecting others despite their differences. |
Here's what I propose: I'll take you up on that offer to contribute and work with you on an event of your choice. Let's see what we can come up with. |
There are multiple ways to contact me already, but you can use the forum messaging system and we can go from there. |
When someone is saying that there's a problem with promoting an event via the forums because not everyone uses the forums... the answer is NOT "use the forums. |
I find it hard to believe I'm being told to let this go. Apparently I'm the only one seeing the irony of someone complaining about how they missed something because they don't use the forums.... On the forums...
Pets Twoheadedboy.. please let it go for me. There's many reasons why ppl dont come to the forums which include real life things. So ppl go outa town for weeks unable to check their mail or surf the internet. Some are so busy at work that they cant spare the time to constantly check the forums. And it sounds like to me that witch only gets few precious times to get online to play and he rather be using it playing with awesome ppl (LIKE MEH) then spending it reading thru all the forums. I was like that way when i was in oklahoma. I worked so much and then had to come home and make dinner and clean and when i finally sat at the computer all i wanted to do was have some fun with my friends. I had an hour to play and i wasnt going to spend it going thru the forums. So i know where witch is coming from.I'm asking for understanding.. Dont make me start throwing out rainbows and fairies and cute forest animals..
instead! think of something that would have made the DoV day better! think of some new activity that we could have done.. maybe a theme costume contest you like to see? i mean after all you have two heads that's two brains that could be working :P
That's all right guys.
I already gave up on this line of thought.
We did our best to promote DOV, and if some feel it wasn't enough they are entitled to their opinion, no matter how we feel about the motivations behind the words.
Personally, I know I should have ignored this, but I have a hard time with certain attitudes.
As things are, I prefer to let people think whatever they want about this last exchange of replies. I think the words speak for themselves enough for people to deduce what is happening here.
I really do want criticism, and hopefully it can be constructive.

NOTE - to the Misfits TF participants: I have received a list from Lorax for the inf you are slated to receive, according to your level of overall participation throughout the day. There are just a few loose ends to tie up and it will be mailed out to you in game. Thanks for your patience.

I am thinking about another theme run for the next event. Right now, I'm leaning towards an Abandoned Sewer TF with sewer-dweller toons. I can't be the only person who's made multiple C.H.U.D. toons, right? I like doing some sort of theme for a PvE challenge, and I'll be staying with that for the next event. I do not mind incorporating RP into my events. I mean, I make my toons with bios, and that Misfit TF run was a chance to do some RP, but I was so task-focused, I never even touched on it in game. So, next time I'll have a smaller scope, will keep some sort of theme, will be PvE, and may add RP.
Personally I thought DoV got an awesome turnout, I think Stalemate worked really hard and did a wonderful job promoting it and I felt like it was a success. That was probably the most I've ever seen happening on Protector and I'm very glad I got to be a part of it. There wasn't much to improve from my perspective.. Sure it could've used more people, but what event couldn't? I think the thing most likely to increase the turnout next time around is people will say "Hey I remember the first one, I had a lot of fun! I'm gonna tell my friends it's happening again!"
If we do this again, I'll probably try to coax the Teamsters into running something or other. Right now we're working on a top-secret project.
we all have top-secret projects XD
Yeah, I never once visited the forums until....*looks at forum join date* about 5 years after I started playing? I don't even know why I started coming to the boards. Frankly, I think it was because I could get away with reading it while at work, and I was curious about the upcoming issue.
In other words, if I had a different job, I'd still be a person that never went to the forums.
So I'm a little late to this afterparty but I figured I'd add my 2c to the mix. I agree with pretty much everything that's been said about +1 and -1, so rather than rehash that, I'll tell you what I was personally hoping to see achieved with this event, and how well we did with that.
First off, the storyline. The storyline idea was an attempt to do a few things for the event:
1) Generate early interest and a "mystique" to the event in the 2months prior to the actual event
2) Generate some interest in a light RP aspect of the game without going all "virtueverse" on everyone, and get some name recognition out there for the organizers and contributors' events
3) Provide a backdrop for the PVP part of the game, and try to get people to renew their interest in PVP
I think overall there was interest generated with those who read the forums but I'm not sure what people thought of the actual story, so if you liked it or didn't like it please let me know, either in this forum or PM. I realize the vanity aspect for a few notable main characters, and we tried to get a lot of cameos for others but with limited success. The story ended up being the length of a small novel which is an achievement but also potentially a hindrance to people having to read and keep up with so much plot. Maybe consider this approach for future events but with a shortened story as plot device.
I think the general takeaway that there is a relatively low number of people who actively participate/view the forums vs the server population (while not surprising) bears some examination. Maybe we need to generate some interesting ideas on how to encourage new players or old players who never have used the forums to take a more active stance. I have some ideas for that which fall under some of my "secret projects"...
Also, in terms of the PVP, we had great participation in both Rasta's Warburg Bounty Hunt and the RV finale, and it was great to see so many heroes and villains duking it out. By my count we had approximately 30 people or more between the two sides in RV, which is a pretty good accomplishment but I was actually hoping for more. I know some comments have been thrown out that this reinforced why people don't PVP which is they feel they can't compete, and the purpose of this was just to have fun and show people it can be fun to PVP. I would like to further explore ways to continue the success with both these events, maybe more future scheduled world-pvp events. Others' ideas for such events would be very welcome.
Secondly, the final themed CC event - Ferria and I wanted to do it up big with lots of categories around the central theme of "Golden Age Heroes/Villains".
This was, I would say, a pretty big success with some obvious flaws.
The success is that we saw some really AWESOME costumes and bios from the participants, and had an outstanding turnout in pocket D, especially considering it was the last of 3 CCs within 2days. I really can't emphasize enough all the great costumes for each of the categories, all the participants did a phenomenal job.
The flaw was the amount of time to do that many categories, and as has already been said, there was some scrambling for everyone to change costumes and alt between categories. In all, we took 2.5 hours for the whole thing, which comes out to 150min for 15 categories, 10 minutes per category, or what ended up being 6min judging/awarding and 4 minutes to alt/change categories. We really crunched this and people rose to the occasion, but we just should have planned more time for everything, and started earlier. That was a takeaway for the whole day, actually, was that we needed buffer time between events so that if one ran a little over, it wasn't bleeding into another event. I'll take the responsibility for that, since the time for the CC was my decision. Another good lesson for next time.
Finally, I wanted to see this be a collaborative effort on the part of a number of the server vets to have a big event built by many hands go off successfully, and unite people for future collaborations like this.
I think it goes without saying, but I will say it anyways, that as a collaboration, I felt this was a huge success. That there were no catfights, dogfights, namecalling, or any disagreements really of any kind, that so many people threw their ideas into the pot to build off the theme, and that so many people could be involved in something this massive on such a tight timeframe, and that it succeeded without any big problems, is a major accomplishment. I really hope that this is the first of what will be many future collaborations for the good of the people who call Protector their home.
So on that note, I'll say one last THANK YOU to anyone who contributed ideas, resources, money, INF, time, networking, writing, coordination, or any of the many many things that went into making this event work. I had a blast, I hope you did too, and I hope we can work together on more cool things in the future.
Cheers!
