Empathy Slotting Help
You should want Adrenaline Boost available much more often than you should want, or need Ressurect available.
Why not throw together a full mids build and say exactly what you want to achieve and you're price range, always a good way to get advice.
Will do, not at home now, in work. Mids won't work on these computers so I'll give that a go. In terms of price, well, I'm not too fussed, naturally, Im not spending billions of inf on one recipe, but I should be able to afford something reasonable.
In my experiences, Empathy loves recharge. Thus Doctored Wounds is the best set ever for it.
Seriously, though, you can get ED capped heal and recharge with five Doctored Wounds (slotting everything but the triple), which's invaluable in Adrenalin Boost and Regeneration Aura. You shouldn't need that extra recharge IO in Heal Other, by the way.
In my experiences, you can generally get alway with one-slotting Resurrect. Very occasionally when things really go to hell, you get teammates dying faster than you can resurrect them which's a bummer, but that'd be an issue even with three recharge in Resurrect. For most situations, it's not really something to worry about.
I don't know that I'd bother to six-slot Efficacy Adaptor into Recovery Aura when you can slot Doctored Wounds five times in your healing powers and hit the rule of five for the 5% recharge bonus. I personally wasn't able to afford the slots to put more than three recharge into Recovery Aura on my Mind/Empathy controller, but I've noticed its base unmodified recovery seemed to be enough to mostly make endurance woes go away. You can still frankenslot for endurance modification and recharge or something if you want, but I'd say recharge's the most important thing.
Fortitude kinda wants more recharge than four Luck of the Gambler can really give. I actually just four-slotted mine with the Luck recharge global and then three Membrane HOs (maximizing defense, to-hit buff, and recharge).
Overall I'd suggest as many recharge set bonuses as you can reasonably afford, but this is coming from the perspective of a controller. You might be able to benefit from ranged defense instead (Energy Blast has room for five Thunderstrikes for example), but it's up to you whether you want more personal survival or more team buffage. Perma AB is a beautiful thing, but it takes a lot of global recharge. And I do mean a lot.
...I guess the short version of this post is "More recharge." Heh. That's the thing for a set like Empathy with really good buffs on really long recharge timers though. It really benefits from recharge.
Adrenaline boost is awesome for the 100% +recharge bonus it grants. And, while you don't really see blasters nuking much these days, with a bit of endmod (around +25%) it can grant a blaster recovery through its nuke crash.
Empathy should pretty much only ever build for recharge.
You should have 5 Doctored Wounds in all five of your primary powers which take it. (HA, HO, AP, RegA, and AB). There's an easy 25% recharge, with (IIRC) 20% healing bonus to boot.
Then, in your secondary, slot Decimations and Positron's Blasts until you have a set of 5 of either of them in a total of 5 powers. So with /Energy, 5 Decis in Bolt, Blast, and Burst, and 5 Posi's Blasts in Torrent and Explosive Blast. Purples can be substituted for even more recharge.
Putting any more than the default slot with a recharge in Resurrect is something I'd never do, personally, unless perhaps you were gearing solely for running trials, in which case you'd have to train your team constantly to not click the hospital button (it's enticing when the hospital is in the same zone).
CM is fine with just that one slot. Lately, with Clarions flying around, I'm starting to consider dropping it entirely, since I won't exemplar with my Emp.
Fortitude would be a personal choice between slotting 4 of the LOTG set or slotting 3 of the Tohit/Def/Rech HOs. I personally went with 3 HOs and a LOTG +Rech, but you may prefer the set bonuses from LOTG over the often-irrelevant Tohit enhancement in Fortitude.
With RA, I just slotted EndMod/Rech from both Efficacy and Performance Shifter sets, and then an L50 Recharge IO. RA is strong enough that it doesn't need that much EndMod slotting, so as long as its recharge is high, you're gold.
The rest of the slotting depends on what pools and epic you take. I would recommend taking 4 LOTG +Rech dump powers if at all possible, so consider the Concealment and Leadership pools.

Recovery Aura already gives TON of recovery, 4 times speed boost iirc, and you never see speed boosted people complaining about end (except my stone melee/elec brute but boy she was heavy on the blue before power sink), so I didn't feel the need to use a set.
I don't have Ressurrect (easy to make wakies and CM+heal somebody to full after that) but I'd leave it at 1 slot with recharge especially since you'll have some recharge bonuses. I also don't have AP because healing is kinda moot in the late game, but I have a mind/emp controller so I had a tighter build (and lots of crowd control so I needed to heal less) and it's not updated for inherent fitness, I'd probably fit Ressurrect back now, not sure if I'd put Absord Pain back in.
I find endmods important in Adren Boost because it goes over the -1000% blaster nuke recovery. Regen Aura OTOH is already Instant Healing levels IIRC (just came back) so you'll be fine with 3 recharges in there although I put healing to get the 2.5% recovery bonuses from Miracle.

What you want most of all with an Emp is recharge. For any heal you have the slots to blow on, i recommend Doctored wounds 5. For heal aura and heal other, leave out the recharge, because they both should be fast enough.
For AB, I recommend 6 slots. Doctored wounds 5 (leave out the pure heal) and one end mod. End mod is important for AB, because it pushes you over 1000% recharge which will cancel out a nuke crash.
For fort, the HOs are the best, with one optional to stick in another LotG.
Slot for +Recharge
With my Emp/Psi as a main and badge hunter, I've spent a lot of cash, so having an idea of your resources would help a lot.
My final build below which is what I play at the moment.

Hasten is back in 111 seconds with just 2 recharge slots, which gives you an idea of how much recharge is in here. I can keep Fortitude on 6 people comfortably. Attack wise, with so much recharge, I can chain 3 single target attacks with the cone comfortably, negating the need for more from the secondary.
However, it's a big budget build, but now extremely fun to play. With only a 30 second downtime on the aura's and T4 Clarion, I'm indestructible.
If you do a search for my Emp/Psi guide, there are a few more budget based builds on there that I put together recently. Most of the secondaries take ranged damage sets which would be interchangable with Energy. My benefit is having a hold in my secondary as well as my Epic, and with both of those taking extra hold procs, that makes a big difference. This might change your strategy slightly.

Hi guys,
I got an Empathy / Energy Blast Defender on the up and I really wanted to get him sorted out, now in terms of slotting Empathy, I'm not too sure, so, what I'll do is I'll list the powers and the slots I was thinking of putting in them, and the IO set that takes my fancy for each of them, and if you could offer me some feedback maybe some pointers that'd be grand. Healing Aura - 4 slots - Numina's Conv... (Unless adding healing or Endurance based enchancements to it makes a big difference, admitedly, this power I was least sure of what to do with, or rather, had least idea what to do with) |
Heal Aura and Heal Other ... 5 Doctored Wounds.
Absorb Pain ... 1 Recharge or maybe 1 Recharge, 2 Heal/Rech frankkenslotted if you have the slots. Skippable if tight on power choices.
Resurrect ... Skippable if tight on power choices (arguably very skippable), I'd go 1 endred if I did take it. Endred over recharge as it's a combat rez if used (otherwise pass the wakie etc.) and worst case it'll be during the 30 or so seconds your Aura's are down and the fight has been very hairy ... 26 end even reduced thru vigilance might get rather expensive and recharge will never get it back fast enough under those circumstances to use on a second downed teammate (they should have long since gotten back in the fight some other way).
Clear Mind ... I generally go 1 range but honestly *shrug* not sure any enhancement here is all that useful over the other possibilities.
Fortitude ... Bazillion different slottings. Lately I like to get two things in here pretty much regardless of other enhancements, 1) a Karma -kb enhancement (either added to or until I have a BotZ -kb somewhere) and 2) a LotG +7.5% recharge.
Recovery Aura ... These days I like 3 slots >> 1 Recharge then frankkenslot 2 Endmod/Rech to max recharge and get a little extra endmod out of it.
Regeneration Aura ... 5 Doctored Wounds. Also always aiming to keep the uptime/downtime on both Recovery and Regeneration Aura as close as possible (makes for one less thing to track/watch as I know both will get recharged then fired off as a package deal).
Adrenaline Boost ... 6 slots >> 5 Doctored Wounds, 1 Endmod/Rech

Heal Other - 6 slots - 5 Doctored Wounds / 1 common IO Recharge Absorb Pain - 4 slots - Numina's Conv Resurrect - 3 slots - Recharge common IO's Clear Mind - 1 Slot - Reduce Endurance Cost SO or IO Fortitude - 4 slots - Luck of the Gambler Recovery Aura - 6 slots - Efficacy Adapter Regeneration Aura - 5 slots - Doctored Wounds Adrenalin Boost - 1 slot - Recharge. (Unless adding healing or Endurance based enchancements to it makes a big difference, admitedly, this power I was least sure of what to do with, or rather, had least idea what to do with) |
I would 6 slot Heal aura. It's the only heal that affects you, and if you go down, you're not going to be terribly helpful to your team. As I said above doctored wounds.
Ressurrect should pretty much be last on your list for slotting. A single recharge is good here.
CM I actually slot range, but end isn't bad either, but then I play to the back of the pack with my empath being psi. Another power that doesn't require much.
AP should be doctored wounds, at least enough to get the +rech bonus.
Recovery aura - Honestly when it's up, the bars are full, with rare exception and tier 9s obviously. It really doesn't need MOAR recovery. I toss 3 regular recharges in it and call it done.
Adren boost is AWESOME. 5-6 slot that puppy, the person you hit with that will thank you. Either recharges or DW.

And yes I agree, Doctored Wounds>Numina's on an Empath.
