I think we need a little bit more clarification on this "logo" notion. How is the logo intended to be "used" ...? Are we talking about something to use as a Wallpaper, or just merely a Forum Avatar? Is this supposed to be something that people "install" in their bases in a show of solidarity and support ... or is it just a "oh that looks cool" sort of thing?

In this case, it helps to know exactly HOW this "logo" is intended to be used, because that informs decisions about presentation, and scale. Kinda hard to use a glorious 1920x1200 screenshot as a 100x100 pixel avatar, and not lose something in the process.

Basically ... what are the "boundaries" on this "logo" you're looking for?

I concur, I'm kind of excited about this, but it feels kind of vague.

Sorry for the reply lag but Real Life has been intruding.

The BBC would like to use the winning entry as the official BBC Avatar. We also plan another event (to be announced after the contest) as a show of support for the Base Community. This is why we specified basic Base Components, we want the winning entry to be something that anyone can duplicate in their own base as a show of BBC support.

Also, to let the cat out of the bag a bit, we will be announcing yet another event soon to be scheduled after the contest to show support for Base Builders everywhere. This event will be LIVE (as opposed to a Forum Event) and will likely take place in late July so stay tuned for more announcements.

We now return you to your normally scheduled lives.

If it's going to be a forum avatar, that means the final picture needs to be no bigger than 100x100 pixels. That "changes" what makes for a good pic (ie. you can't have panoramic views of tremendous frame and scope).

Good to know.

Apparently I've only got two "good" views in my base that would work as a 100x100 pixel forum avatar. Plus this leaves me a slot for a third submission if I can ever find another suitable view for a screenshot inside my base for yet another one of these.

For the Avatars, I cropped and shrank the images (of course) ... then dialed the color saturation all the way up to max, since the colors really suffered in the resizing, and dialed the exposure up by +50% so as to actually be able to *see* details in the avatars which are plenty clear in the full sized 1920x1200 screenshots.

Admittedly not a completely serious entry, but for this contest I will just submit my Sushi bar here and now:

Very nice! If it's decided that an entry is too good to pass up we'll figure out the avatar somehow. We want to encourage creativity, not stifle it with the avatar size limitations.

If image size were no object, I'd be submitting a view like this one ... (click image to see large). As you can see, that doesn't exactly "work" in a 100x100 pixel format.

Actually ... I think I know the perfect Avatar(s) to advertise our plight here on the forums.

  • Grandville Beacon (arcane)
  • Grandville Beacon (tech)
  • Pocket D Beacon (arcane)
  • Pocket D Beacon (tech)
Do them up as an animated GIF, with each of the 4 frames slowly fading into the next.

Why would this be the perfect Avatar for the forums? Because all four of these Beacons are "broken" ... even when they're working. Kinda like the Base Editor, really ...

Regrettably, I don't have the necessary "parts and pieces" in my Bases (nor the requisite GIF making software) to create this Avatar.

Eh, I'll bite...

My own avatar submission:

And a larger view to better see how it's built:

Not that it's rocket science. I tend toward zen-like simplicity wherever feasible, especially when submitting logo ideas.

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas

Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.

This is a nice one Bloodspeaker! I have a simpler one in my own base but not with the colors and the orb in the middle. Very nice!

The mild irony is that this room no longer exists in any of my current bases, though I did pull the "floating orb" idea for a meditation garden in one of them. It was originally how I designed the entry portal room (with the orb hanging directly over the portal) for an arcane SG I used to run on Liberty. I have no idea if that room even still exists, but like I said, it was an easy thing to re-create, and has a visual structure that works for a simple logo.

Inspired by this thread.

(no this is not an entirely serious suggestion for the contest)

Only thing I can think of is that they may be getting sent to a different folder somehow.

Worst case scenario in the meantime; the shot should at least be going to your clipboard, you could paste it into Paint (or other quick photo editor) immediately after taking the shot. Then save it into the proper file, then edit as desired. Drawback is, you'd have to do the paste/save business one shot at a time.
