Screen Flicker Issue
I see this once in a while as well thou it is very rare. I run 4gigs of RAM with a GTS 250 and most of the settings on medium. Never found a fix for this even updating all drivers. I chalk it up as a simple glitch that occurs once in a while and as long as I can still play the game I am not to worried about it.
Keeping it Brutal !!!!!!!!
I got a new computer a few weeks ago, and it pretty much runs CoH like a champ. Ultra Mode looks amazing, and I get completely smooth performance, except for one thing:
When I'm running around the game world the screen will flicker very briefly. It's sort of a black flash that is so fast sometimes it takes me a second to realize it happened again. This does not seem to happen in door missions at all, only outside. It happens regardless of which "side" I'm playing on, though it does seem to be much worse in Praetoria. I updated to the most recent graphics driver for my card and it didn't seem to do any good. I have an nVidia Geforce GTX 470 video card and am running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit edition). Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? |
NVidia GTX460 on Win7 x64 Home Premium.
And no, in 6 months I haven't found a fix for it except to not play in Praetoria much.

I was getting this pretty bad with my Radeon HD 5750 (Windows 7 64-bit OS, too). Outdoors only, with it being much more prevalent in Praetoria.
Bringing reflections down to medium, turning off occlusion, then bringing occlusion back up to the lowest active setting, seems to have significantly reduced it in Praetoria (and I haven't seen in happen anywhere else since).
The thing that confounds me is the part where turning off occlusion gets rid of it, but then I can turn occlusion back on without trouble unless I really ramp it up along with the reflection settings.
These settings don't require a client restart so it can't hurt to give it a try and share whether or not it worked for you, too.
Thanks for the advice ScottyB.
I noticed something interesting since this morning: this issue does not happen when it's night in game. I mean, not at all, not even in Praetoria.
The only thing I can think of that is different between day and night in game is shadows. (At night the game just doesn't render shadows at all.)
I'll try your suggestion Scotty. I'm also going to try disabling/adjusting shadows to see what that does. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

If it doesn't happen at night, try messing with your shadow settings.

The only way to make the flicker go away entirely was to put shadows to the lowest setting. I haven't messed around with the advanced shadow options yet, I'll try that next and see if there's a happy medium that still looks good but eliminates the flicker. It will be a shame if I have to do without them though.
I would like to note that my framerates stayed consistent the entire time. Running around Imperial City my framerates were between 57 and 60 fps regardless of what shadow setting I used. So while my system seems perfectly capable of handling the shadow technology in CoH, there's something about the way CoH does shadows that my video card just doesn't like, hence the flickering.

Yup, it looks like it's an issue with the shadows. The only settings that eliminate this is turning the shadows right down to a blob.
That's a real shame. As far as I'm concerned the best bit of ultra mode is the realistic shadows. I guess I'll just be avoiding Praetoria from now on, I like the shadows on my characters too much to turn it off.
Out of curiosity, is this a known issue with Nvidia 4xx series cards or are we just unlucky? Is it driver related or just how the shadows in CoH are implemented that freaks out the cards? I'm currently running driver version 266.58 but will update to the latest version (275.33) to see if that makes any difference.

I tried tinkering with the advanced shadow settings, but couldn't get anything but the lowest settings to get rid of the flicker entirely. For the moment, I've just turned off shadows altogether. Seems kind of silly I should have to, but ah well. It's that or I'm going to start thinking my PC is sending me subliminal messages with all the screen flashing.

I agree completely about shadows being the best part of ultra mode.

I don't have any problems blue side and minimal issues red side. I like the shadows to much to turn them off so I guess I'll just avoid playing in Preatoria. I've been through there a couple of times so I'm not bothered about doing that content again.
