Clearly we need price caps. Fuel was $2 a gallon no so long ago, there is no reason for it to now be $4 a gallon other than flippers.

In the real world, these sorts of things don't happen...so...they shouldn't happen here either.

I was talking to a precious metals broker the other day. He told me that there are over 2 billion silver contracts out right now. He also says that there is no where near even 1 billion ounces of silver in the U.S.

Precious metals is in a huge bubble right now thanks to nutwing apocalypse preachers (and I'm not talking about the May 21 guy). They think that if the world economy collapses, you can use precious metals as tender. Like if you bring in an ounce of gold to the WalMart, they'll not only accept it but they'll make change with it... with you know... those billion pieces of precious metal coinage that doesn't exist for such exchanges to actually take place.

Precious metals are only worth something because humanity wants them. If the end times come they'd just be shiny rocks. Who wants shiny rocks when you need food?
In other words, people are dumb.

Indeed. That's why I have a 30' x 40' garden planted and all nicely fenced in to keep the bunnies out. The seeds didn't cost any where near what an ounce of silver does.

The best thing about this is that silver went so crazy because people who wanted to take a punt didn't have enough capital to bet on gold. Primarily a retail-driven scramble.

If the traditional religious end times come with all the bizarre changes like water turning into blood and all that then the world has started working on very different principles than what we've known the last few millenia. In that case perhaps shiny rocks will in fact become incredibly edible or otherwise useful.

Maybe it's because of where I live, but I've always wondered, if such a thing happened and you try to buy something with a fist full of gold, won't you just get mugged? If not immediately, then eventually. After all, you're probably the only one smart enough to have useable currency around in your neighborhood and someone will take notice that you're the only one who can buy food.

The U.S. M3 money supply is around 10 trillion dollars now, the actual currency in circulation is around 2 trillion dollars. Silver has some catching up to do.

I figure a more likely problem is finding someone who's actually willing to sell you food for the gold. The problem is that in a breakdown of society only two things are really valuable: food (which you need to eat) and weapons (which can be used to defend your food supply and/or steal food from other people).

Unless you have an abundance of food and "security" then gold doesn't do you much good.

Buy? What is a store going to do with a bunch of shiny rocks?

Roughly the same thing they do with a bunch of printed pictures with numbers on them. Swap them for something that IS of use.

If you get down to full-on Mad Max level, money is no use- everything's barter. You get a little more complex, though, and instead of swapping a cuisinart blade for two hours of battery time and two hours of battery time for a pair of sunglasses, you end up using something inherently worthless as intermediate currency. Gold is a good choice- it is small, portable, pretty, hard to fake [although the bitemarks would probably tend to add up] and it's not much good for anything else.

Then the next thing you know people are standardizing it and stamping something into it so you know it's good and you don't have to bite it, and bam we're back to gold coins.

I'm saying that during a zombie apocalypse for example shiny rocks aren't of any use at all! Who is going to back your paper with words or shiny rocks as currency when everyone is in a panic, food supplies are super limited etc?

If we go Mad Max level, your best investment is good shoes and weatherproof clothing; second best is some way of purifying water; lawyers guns and money are way down on the list.

Edit: found my source.

That's only true if there is a certain amount of civilization around to provide a solid backing for the currency. People will only take currency (even specie) if they either want it themselves or are confident other people will accept it as currency.

In a scavenger world or subsistence level economy this is unlikely to be the case. Once things get a bit more settled and towns start going up then you'll start seeing currency again.

I would disagree slightly on the guns portion. Yes, they are less essential for surviving but they also prevent other people from taking the stuff you have that is essential to survival (or allow you to take similar items from other people if you want to go that route).

Sure, you wouldn't be able to buy a loaded shotgun with your shiny nuggets, but you could probably trade it for some non vital amenities with whoever has any extra. I'm assuming the end of the world won't entail the destruction of all cosmetics, entertainment, etc.
