Returning Player needs some advice.

I am an old player who recently decided to return to the game. I played a little bit in beta through all the way to when IOs were introduced (I9 I think). So I’ve been gone for about three years or so.

I certainly didn’t want to jump into my 50s and expect to play at high levels so I did play some lowbies to get back into the groove. Now I think I am ready to progress my 50s into the new content but I have a question.

Here is my situation:
All of my 50s are still equipped in SOs. I do have some influence and IOs that I had crafted long ago so I’m not completely starting from scratch. I even have Hami-Os that I can sell once I respec my characters (to benefit from the inherent fitness).

Equipping IOs are obviously the first step but I don’t want to work on equipping all three of my characters. I don’t have the influence to fully equip one of my characters let alone three.

So, to all you longtime vets, if you were in my shoes, which character would you work on?

I have a…

Kat/regen scrapper
Energy/energy blaster (a blapper…are blappers still viable?)
Illusion/Radiation controller

Of the three I’m least interested in my controller. It always felt kind of cheap using her because illusion coupled with radiation is incredibly powerful. I used to solo AVs with her when PA was perma (which I understand can be once again with the proper IOs) before the nerf. But that didn’t really stop me since I later duoed with an ill/kin controller. We used to fly out to monster island to duo GMs…good times.

I do solo a lot but I’m certainly not adverse to joining teams. I would love to be able to solo AVs again with incarnate powers. I’m assuming both my scrapper and controller will be able to do so with the IOs and incarnate powers. I’m not so sure on the blaster.

So which one should I focus on?

Both Kat/Regn scrappers and Ill/Rad trollers are great fighting machines; dunno about the blaster, not my area. If the troller feels 'cheap' to you, then I'd say go with the scrapper.

Just as a quick aside. SOs are perfectly playable. Even in the iTrials. I use them myself and found myself invited to a 10-man Lambda run last night. 1st run on that toon and no real problems.

As for the inf concerns, I might recommend heading down to the market forums, but the obvious advice is to focus on selling just now. Oh and remeber you have multiple builds now to experiment with.

And lastly, since I don't IO my toons, cruise on down to the archetype forums and see what appeals to you most. This approach will likely bring you more satisfaction than random folks telling you to pick A over B and C.

It's not how many times you get knocked down that count. It's how many times you get up.

Just make sure if you sell them on the market, you sell them for more than a vendor will buy them for.

Also, have you picked up Going Rogue? 30 USD, so only costs you $15 after the free month if you haven't yet. Gives access to the alignment system - and if you stay hero or villain while running the tip and morality missions, you end up getting "Alignment merits" - (one every two days) - one thing many will do is get 2 merits then buy a "Luck of the Gambler : Global Recharge Bonus" IO at level 25 (It's a global IO, so works as a set bonus - 25 is the minimum level you can get it at, just move the slider down) and sell those on the market for large sums of inf.

This. Even with Kat using DA to help add defense, /regen will still make you be active at all times.

Going to also pop in with my standard list-o'-links to make your life easier.

Paragonwiki: If you want to know about something in the game, it's here. Period. THE reference for the game.

Mid's Hero Designer: An absolutely ROCKIN' tool for planning out builds ahead of time. Play around as much as you want and never waste inf. The standard format for sharing builds on the boards.

Titan Sentinel: A nice little tool for tying into the Titan City Info Terminal project at http://cit.cohtitan.com. But the MUST HAVE feature of this program is that it allows you to actually export your LIVE build from the game into Mids. Even if you don't use CIT, this is more than enough reason to create an account and download this program.

Vidiot Maps: A nifty map overlay that's critical for badge hunters. Direct link to the Sourceforge Page.

Personally I'd go with the controller, but that's because of my playstyle. Sounds like yours is the opposite, so the scrapper is likely the better choice.

Regardless of which toon you choose, I recommend that you don't immediately respec out of whatever build you have now. Instead, use one of your alternate builds to create the "new you". That way you've got the old one to use if something doesn't work out the way you like. As for slotting the new build, use Mids (as linked above) to determine what you want before you start, and avoid rare/ultra-rare IOs initially. Yes, the build will be less powerful without rares, but you can get it for a lot cheaper and you'll learn a lot about how to use IO sets. By the time you've finished that build, you'll have earned more inf to use in creating a better build with rare IOs.

Thank you all for the advice so far. No one likes nrg/nrg blasters, eh?

I have been looking over guides and tinkered with Mids. I suppose I could use a new build but id rather just create a new character then with all new powersets.

The Ill/Rad is the strongest, but the Kat/Regen is probably cheaper to get a solid build on. To get the Blaster to the level of solo'ing AVs you're going to have to spend more INF, but it's definitely possible and not really that hard with a good build and a full slate of Incarnate powers.

If you have some decent HOs to sell you may be surprised at how much they bring. One or two can be enough to fund a pretty good build.

I'd suggest starting with the Scrapper and doing a cheap build to keep as much INF in reserve as possible.

Note that you don't have to have a Titan account to download Sentinel.

Note that you DO have to have a badge-hunter account to download Vidiotmaps (unless you have someone send you the install file, or find it in Google).

No. Actually you don't. The link I provided goes right to the SourceForge page. No signups required. Not quite sure WHY the VidiotMaps site requires a signon just to be routed to a public site via URL. (Kinda shady actually.)

I've decided to take the advice of everyone here and will focus on my scrapper. I guess it's appropriate since he was my main way back when. I will endeavor to make him powerful once again (or close to it) before the Great Regen Nerf. I should say nerfs because it didn't stop at one time...

If you have any more advice to a returning player, please let me know.

Once again, thanks all.

The scrapper's going to be more forgiving (well, survivable) in any case while you get your sea legs (because it sounds better than your cox legs) back under you and get caught up.

Once you do, go ahead and look at your blapper. Yes, it's still viable. You'll definitely want to tweak to take advantage of things like inherent stamina as well as IOs, though - and use those IOs (as well as the incarnate system, if you have Going Rogue) to work on things like... defense, kb protection and the like.

Blappers can be more survivable nowadays if you accumulate +def set bonuses.

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.
