Help needed getting the game to install

Hello all, new to the forums and City of Heroes. I've been dying to play this game for quite some time, but just recently got a PC that could run it well. After buying my new system, I immediately went to the site and set up an account. Well, two days later and I still can't download the game...

I've got the installer and when I try to run it I get nothing. I was getting the permissions question (running Windows 7), but turned everything off to make sure there wasn't any interference. Still nothing...except I don't get the questions anymore. I've tried 3 different installers, from different locations, didn't work either.

Just for kicks I tried to install WOW, and Champions online, and both of those installed flawlessly. It's getting frustrating as I want to play City of Heroes, and not those games lol. I signed up for the trail, and now I think I just have 4 days left, and haven't even been able to download the game.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm itching to sink my teeth into this game, but just can't get it going from my end. Still waiting to hear something from support as well, just thought the forums might be a bit quicker.

Sorry to hear you are having a frustrating time of it, and I wish I could be more helpful. The only thing I can offer, which you may have already done is to call support and actually talk to someone instead of waiting on e mail communication. The support number from the NC Soft web site is 1-512-225-6359.

Aside from that, welcome to the game and to the forums. I'm sure once you are up and running you will be just as hooked as the rest of us.

Thanks for the quick response, I'm at work so unfortunately I can't call right now and depending on their hours; may not be able to.

Yup, it's frustrating as I've never had an issue I can't figure out when installing a game until now lol. The COH_installer starts to run, shows up in task manager...then just vanishes. Similar to what some programs do when they need permissions, but I have that turned off so I'm not sure what's going on. I am new to Windows 7 (from XP) so I thought maybe checked a box or something that I shouldn't have. If that was the case I wouldn't of thought WOW or Champions would download though...out of ideas for now, but thanks for the response & the welcome.

I'd recommend downloading the installer from HERE and giving it a whirl.

Yes, it's the NCSoft installer, but the game will be moving over to it entirely in the not-too distant future, so it's worth using.

If that's the installer you're using, I have very little further advice to give.

Did you right click it and try to run it as admin? Long shot, but has worked for me more than once.

This.

With Windows Vista and Windows 7, even if you have Admin rights on the account you're using, sometimes you have to right click on the installation file and go to "Run as Administrator."

Also, you may have to add an "exception" to your anti-virus software for the installer.

Are you running 64-bit? If so then there's a "known" quirk with the updater that can cause problems - never worked out why but it's an easy workaround. Not sure if it still applies if you're using the new NCSoft Launcher.

Okay here's the update...

I'm have been using the new launcher the entire time, maybe the old one would work? I have no idea. I went into windows firewall and added the installer to the allowed list, and still no go...

I tried running as adminstrator as well, no luck there either. When I click the icon i get the "working" symbol, then it shows up in task manager. Right after that I get a very brief "flashing" of the setup icon in the taskbar, but after 20 seconds or so the program is gone from the Task Manager..

I do remember (don't know how i forgot), that the first time I downloaded the program I ran it and got some kind of screen, but cancelled as I had didn't have my batter charged on the laptop, and didn't want it dying half way through the dl. Don't know if that will help or not. I'm going to monkey around with the settings a bit more, but I'm clueless as of now.

Once again, thanks for all the replies. I look forward to playing the game...if I can get it to run lol

Edit - Yup, I'm using the 64 bit, but i'm also using the new installer..

Okay, just to mention, I've installed the game on two 64-bit Win7 systems without a single glitch, so that shouldn't be a problem for you.

Go to your Control Panel and find NCSoft Launcher. If it's there, right-click and select remove, then try again. If it's not there... umm... anyone?

Lol, unfortunately its not there. I can usually troubleshoot my way out of anything, but this is honestly the first time in 10 years I can't figure something out like this. That's why I thought maybe I missed something with Windows 7.

I uninstalled all the preloaded security crap, as I don't use that stuff anyway. I'm going to reboot and try again, maybe the program was flagged by Microsoft security essentials or something. That's all I have left to go on at this point..

Customer service just got back to me, and linked me to a different installer package. It's working now, but I still have no idea what the issue was with the installer. Barring any other snags, I'll be zipping around City of Heroes after the massive download is done lol...

Thanks again, for all the responses and help. I'm sure I will be frequenting the boards once I get set up and going in the game!
