Taking Screenshots

I read somewhere (on the Dev Forum IIRC) that screenshots may not be working correctly.

I have a project coming up soon and would like some screenies from the game but I can't seem to find them after they've been taken.

I'm running GR and CoX from Steam since my disks were lost from years back due to fire.

Any idea where the screenshots would be saved or if this feature is even working correctly?

Thanks in advance.

Screenshots have been working for me.

It's in the "Screenshots" folder under your install directory (c:\program files\cityofheroes, c:\program files\steam\... whatever the directory structure was\cityofheroes, etc._)

If they are not in your installation directory, you probably have Vista or Win7, in which case they are stored in your Virtual Store:
C:\Users\"name"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\

I do have Vista (more is the pity...) but I have no AppData or VirtualStore files or folders anywhere. I'm the sole user of the machine so there is no username or ownername involved.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks again for the effort.

Perhaps with the default directory they are.

Running Win7 x64 here, my install directory is d:\games\city of heroes. They just go right into the \screenshots folder.

Can always just search for screen*.jpg, too.

Yes, you do. Even a single user machine has a username - which probably *is* "Owner." Head to control panel, users, you'll see it there.

Programs installed into the Program Files folder tend to put stuff into the Virtual Store in order to play nice with UAC/permissions. Programs installed outside of that don't have to worry about that.

When you hit PrintScreen, Windows does a screendump to the clipboard (this doesn't work for some people running the game in fullscreen). You can open any image editing software and press Ctrl+V to paste the screendump there. Also, in Vista and Win7, there's a tool for doing screen captures, though I don't use it so I can't remember the name - Clipping Tool, maybe?

Close -- it's "Snipping Tool", and can be found in your Windows "Accessories" folder.

AppData is hidden by default.
Even if you don't know where to or can't set hidden files and folders to be shown you can still get there.
At the top of an explorer window where it shows your current location if you click behind the last folder name it turns into a normal 'address bar' sort of thing so you get to see and can change the path.
Entering "C:\Users\[username]\AppData" there will take you there.

Just do control, printscreen if this doesn't work and paste them in microsoft paint(integrated with Windows 7).

You have them, they're hidden by default

  1. Open up a filesystem browser (go to Computer, etc).
  2. Click Alt+T (Hit the Alt and T key at the same time). This'll bring up the menus.
  3. Hit O or click on Folder Options.
  4. Go to the View tab.
  5. Check "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"
  6. Not sure, but you may have to also UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"
  7. Click OK. You should now be able to browse and find said folders.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

try C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\screenshots

other than that, Steam is wierd taking screenshots with some games. You need to click "View" then go down to "Screenshots" at the top of the steam window, that will open your Steam screenshot manager. You'll be able to select a specific game or just pull from your last session with a dropdown box. once you're at the screenshots for the game you want, select one of the shots and click "Show on Disk" at the bottom of the manager window, this should open the folder where those images are.

Unfortunately I can't give you the exact folder tree because it's assigned by steam and would be something like "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\63858867\760\remote\550\scree nshots" depending on the game and system I'd imagine, but the above should get you there.

Also worth noting, Steam doesn't make use of "Print Screen" in my experience, it uses F12 to take screenshots. Hope that all helps.

I looked and Steam does indeed use F12. I took made several attempts to take pics from the Character Select screen but when I went to view the folder from Steam there was nothing there. I'll be logging in later on today and I'll try to take shots in-game to see if that works.

Thanks again for all the help.

The character select screen typically won't be captured. You CAN use the snipping tool - but otherwise, you'll need to manually paste it into an image application (like paint.)
