SS/FA Farming - a few simple questions.

Hi folks,

I've been levelling my SS/FA brute pretty heavily over the past day or so as I'm sick of being stretched for cash on my main, so wanted to get this farmer up and running. One of my guildies advised me that I should be able to start doing the fire farms to level when I got plasma shield, which I did at level 14 if I'm not mistaken. Trying to fire farm though (on +0/0) in Crey's Cyborg farm didn't go too well, so I put it off until level 22 (when I swap over to lv 25 IOs, or psuedo-SO's as I like to call them).

In any case, while I'm aware that most of the technique for doing the farm is going to come down to practice, I did have a few simple questions which I think some of the more experienced fire farmers should be able to answer:

1. While hitting the fire resistance cap is easy enough, what % should I be looking for in the way of defense once I get to +4/8? And what sort of defense should I be looking for against the particular enemies that are to be found in the Crey fire farm? S? L? I'm aware that a lot of players use purps to cover for the non-capped defense; I'm just trying to get an idea as to what most players have before they use insps (on that note, how many purps would you use at once?).

2. As a SS/FA brute (who'll eventually get Mu, and probably Void judgement), is there much of a problem with endurance, or does consume fully socketed with End Mod cover it? I'm just wondering if I should be including a few End Red IOs with my lv 22 enhancement shake up. I know I've been having endurance problems here and there with my current farm (my typical boss-only farm for lower level chars); I'm just wondering if it carries over to the fire farm.

3. If I'm not looking to get anything beyond really cheap set enhancements and 50 IOs once I reach 50, about how quickly should I be looking to complete a run assuming nothing goes wrong?

I might have more questions to come, but that should do for now - the defense one is the real big one though. Thanks for any help!

1. melee or fire def is the way to go and soft cap if you can. i believe 32.5 is one purps worth but facing plus four i think the number is closer to 59% to cap.
2. its nothing severe if you get the + end performance shifter in stamina you will use consume pretty often with haste and rage drops but you shouldn't have problems.
3. on my cheap build i can can clear in about 8 given how that particular farm is set up.

1. DO NOT SLOT FOR DEF. +rech, +rech, and more +rech. Insp can cover def, the one thing they can’t cover is +rech.
2. You shouldn't have any end problems.
3. When soloing you want about 3-4min tops, once you are IOed. Even on a cheap build. If you’re in it to make money you want the highest ticket/min possible, which is where the money is. If it's taking any longer you either need to find a different mish, change the way you run it, or take a look at your build.

Also, Drake. The soft cap is 45% no matter what, well +8s get extra tohit but that’s +8. Increased relative lvl only increases acc, which doesn’t affect the soft cap at all.

1. A typical even level minion has a base of 50% chance to hit you. The minimum chance to hit is 5%. There are accuracy modifiers for level differences and higher ranked foes, but those are calculated after defense. Therefore, the soft cap is 45% defense.

A small inspiration gives 12.5% defense. 45% - 12.5% = 32.5%. That's why that number is used often. It may be difficult to reach 32.5% defense and still have a lot of recharge bonus in your build, though. 32.5% - 12.5% = 20%. That number is much easier to reach.

2. The Miracle and Numina's uniques give a decent amount of recovery. Most people slot those in Health.

A general note about AE farming: It is one of the slowest ways to earn INF in this game. You could speed-run tip missions, collect alignment merits, and turn those into Luck of the Gambler global recharge IOs which sell for about 150 million right now. That takes about 30 minutes per day. You could also learn to play the market and make several hundred million per day once you get the hang of it.

I will agree that marketing is faster than AE. However, for me, AE was way, way, way faster than tip farming.

9k tickets converts to about 200-300million inf (depending on market, some things are way down with i20) and, if you are purely farming tickets (solo, no bosses, etc.) you can hit 9000 in 6 runs, or <35 minutes (depending on loading times) for a decent build. Spend another 20-30 minutes crafting and you have made 200 million in an hour. How fast are you running 5 tips per alt and converting to a lotg every 4 days? It sounds like you put in about 2 hours per lotg?

I haven't timed it, but I would estimate that it takes me less than 5 minutes per mission, including tip farming and travel time. I am picky and don't accept the escort missions or other annoying ones because I know how to farm tips quickly on hero and villain sides. So, that's about 1.5 hours per LOTG and I don't need an amazing build or even an AT that is good at farming. I just stealth to the objective and complete it.

It sounds like you just have a very good ticket farmer and map. The OP probably won't be at that speed of ticket farming for a while.

The times I gave were for a very solid farmer (but not the best! The good ones are like 30-50% faster than me from what I hear) doing 4/8/bosses... I don't know exactly how the 0-+4 affects the ticket rate (I've heard higher + gets better tickets but never bothered to test), however if you were just running -1/8/noboss or 0/8/noboss I wonder if you couldn't get those times with SOs. Still, let's call it an hour to get 9k tickets with a substandard farming build (a tank with SOs, say).

The crafting process seems to be a drag on many people, most people don't have time for that so they just turn around and sell stuff... I'd say that cuts you down to 50-100 million on average, depending on flukey rolls. Could still be 200 easy enough.

As for maps, anyone can find those - the main arcs are all posted in the farming thread. Or you could just search for "fire" and try out a couple and find one you like.

If your main goal is just "make money", I think the market & AE are the way to go. If doing the same thing over and over aren't your thing (and they aren't mine, really, I only do it sporadically), then tip missions may be more fun & rewarding.

Also, 5 minutes per tip is quite a bit faster than I do them - especially counting all the variance & "bad" tips that drop (I hate you Oranbega!) for me. Usually when I do tips I run 3 accounts so I'm pretty much guaranteed to at least get a decent tip mission BUT sometimes even then I have 9 missions that I would really rather not run (I have all the redside ones & most of the others documented so I know which are annoying to me).

What do you usually turn your tickets into? I've read many people swear by bronze rolls, but it seems like you'd need to roll to the recipe cap, delete most of the recipes, and repeat way too many times.

Well put.

I for one dont craft though. I make about 200mil in 30-20min or so, well i get the recipes worth 200mil then wait and stack them in 10s, depending on the prices. But with the resent drop in reactive prices...

Oh, and when it comes to bronze rolls all that deleting doesnt take very much time. Right click>D takes about 1 second a recipe.

The trick I use to get fast tip drops is farming bosses in Terra Volta. Bosses seem to have a 25% tip drop rate, so I ignore minions and LTs unless my AoEs are ready. Learning which contacts to dismiss speeds things up a lot. I Ouro to Talos to do my first 3 tip missions because almost every mission will be there if you investigate the tips while standing in Talos. I then use my base teleporter to get to Terra Volta fast for the last two tips and Ouro back to Talos to finish them.

Yep.

But, like ultrawatt said, right click->D ftw. Although I have to be careful not to delete good stuff...done that too many times .

Also, check out the market, there are some sets with recipes that are worth nothing, but crafted sell for 5-15mill & drop in bronze.

I finally got solid data on how long it takes me to do tip missions. The difference in completion time between my first tip and last was 15 minutes. Add in less than 5 minutes to get the initial tips and complete the first mission. That's less than 1 hour and 20 minutes to get one Luck of the Gambler global recharge. It could be done faster. I had some idle time in there, and I ran to Terra Volta on my second trip to get tips, instead of using my base teleporter pads.

If you don't mind the randomness of the ticket system, and the time it takes to craft, it can be faster INF sometimes. If you just want guaranteed INF, farm alignment merits.

Um, 1:20 of farming AE averages me about 500mil or likely more. And i mean average, like lots and lots of trials.

Does that include crafting time and market time?

I dont craft but i believe it does include ticket/selling times. Of course, it might take a few days for everything to sell. I havent farmed for more than 20min at a time in a few weeks either, so numbers could have gone down or up.

Just a quick question? How do /FA brutes cope outside the fire farm missions? I have had one sat at 50 for ages just not sure what to do with. I was thinking softcap for melee defense so it can work just as well outside the AE, but Im worried about gimping the build. Anyway this is what I came up with, any advice would be greatly appreciated?

There are almost as many ranged attacks as there are melee attacks. It isn't that simple to protect yourself. If you want decent protection, aim for 20% or 32.5% defenses. That can be in S/L and E/N, or melee/ranged/AoE. Reaching 45% is not really a good option for Fire Armor because it leaves you with little or no recharge bonus and bad offensive power due to powers taking a long time to recharge. Running a good DPS attack chain is important for a DPS character.

On a farm build you dont want to shoot for any def just +rech, as stated many many times before. But I soloed an MoITF on my non-farm build....so yeah.

Syntax, sorry dude but you are completely wrong about reaching 45% not being a good option. Outside of farming you want 45% s/l def, period. Which protects from basically all melee attacks, as well as a good chunk of ranged AND AoE attack.
And it is very very very easily to get quite a bit of +rech while you are at the soft cap. In fact, you can get to the point where DR makes it not even worthwhile to get more +rech. Build I'm running right now has 60% rech, i plan to respec into something that has 80% +rech and still s/l soft capped.

This is my lastest build im planning for my SS/Fire brute (lvl30 atm and loving burn A LOT). Its designed for general content with S/L softcapped and 140% rech, but i think it will perform well on farms, maybe you can consider some ideas from it. It could be a little pricey tho...
