Discussion: The Player Help System and You!

Issue 20 has launched and we've certainly spent a lot of time talking about some of the exciting new features such as the Incarnate Trials, Incarnate Powers and the new Strike/Task Forces. One new feature that we haven't spent much time talking about is the all new Player Help System. Because so many of us play CoH for the amazing Community, we wanted to introduce a feature that showcases the most helpful and friendly bunch of gamers you'll find this side of Paragon City (or the Rogue Isles if you prefer ).

To paraphrase the Issue 20 patch notes, the first time you log in on a new character (or an existing character for the first time following the launch of Issue 20) you'll be prompted with a new pop up box. Now at this point you'll be tempted to click as fast you can to make it go away but please, resist that urge, we promise it's worth it! In this popup menu, you're given the option to participate in the Player Help System (hereafter referred to as the PHS) as either a Helper by choosing the "Helper" option or as someone who could use guidance (in game, silly) by selecting the "Help Me!" option. There is also the option to choose "Neither" if you don't wish to participate in the PHS (that's fine, we're keeping all of the cookies to ourselves).

Players who have chosen the path of a "Helper" will find that their name has been changed to a golden color, as they are treasured members of our community who are giving selflessly of their time (laying it on a bit thick, aren't we?). As a Helper, you'll also be granted the corresponding title of "Helper" should you choose this option, unless you have a temporary title, in which case your temporary title will override the "Helper" title.

But where can players go for help? Well, the Help Channel has been added to default list of chat channels that are displayed in the Global chat tab. By default, the Help Tab has also been colored orange and is denoted by a question mark (?) to make it easier for new players to find. Also, we've now made it so that typing "/h", "/help" or "/guide" will direct your chat to the Help Channel. To open the actual Help Window, players can type "/helpwindow" or simply press "H" when not in chat mode.

Thanks to our veteran Community for continuing to be helpful, friendly and just a little wacky. And if you're a new player experiencing City of Heroes for the first time, welcome! Be sure to utilize the Player Help System to make your entry to Paragon City, the Rogue Isles or Praetoria as smooth as possible!

Well, I didn't fully disregard the option, but I was in a hurry to join some friends for the BAF and I clicked Helper without realizing it would give me that title. I thought I would just be flagged as someone willing to help in searches... or something.

Question is: is there a way to turn the title off? It's... well, it's rather annoying to be honest, having "Helper" floating above my name all the time. I am perfectly willing to help a new player out in any way I can, but the aesthetic of the title is troublesome (to me, at least).

Even more than the "Helper" title, I can't imagine even the most green of new players wanting to have "Help me!" above their heads. That's not very heroic.

So can I turn the title off or opt out of the PHS system once I have clicked out of that popup screen at first i20 login? I took a cursory look through the options window and didn't see it if it's there.

Thanks!

The option to change it is in the old help screen, so just press H when not chatting and you can freely set you help status to nothing if you prefer.

Okay, cool.

Thanks!

Gold color huh? So that's what that is. Everyone I've talked to has said it looked more like yellow and wondered why the helper got a yellow name and the people needing help got nice shiny PURPLE names =P

Interesting concept but something tells me a number of people will just be stupid and select that they need help so they have a purple name lol. Already seen it a number of times since I20 went live.

Yeah, seeing lvl 50's (or 50+1's) with the "Help Me!" over their heads is ridiculous. I have a couple of suggestions that I think might help improve this system. A countdown timer associated with the Help Me part would make sense to me. If you choose Help Me, 1) it will only stay visibly active over your name for a 5 minute duration after which it will return your status to normal, 2) when it reaches the last 10 seconds, an annoying prompt pops up asking if you want to maintain your Help Me status, 3) selecting Help Me sends out a generic message over the Help channel that "$name is $level and needs help!" to alert the community, and 4) selecting Help Me defaults your chat window into the Help Channel. This might effectively eliminate the "cry wolf" syndrome we're seeing already. LOL

PS - I also think that there should be an easy "hot button" for going into and out of Help Me status - like having 911 on speed dial. Maybe a small button beside the chat window?

Okay, this explains something that was baffling me when I was checking on things..

Right now, if you type /h, /help, or /guide by themselves, you get the ABSURDLY unhelpful message "Incorrect Format: try /help (Command Synonyms: /h, /help, /guide)"

I didn't realize the slash command for bringing up the help window had changed.

I'd already sent that in as a bug report, consequently.

Yes, the idea of a 50 needing help when faced with almost 150 new powers and their variations, 4 new Incarnate slots, 64 new trees for those slots, a few dozen new salvage components, a new multi-team grouping system and a couple of challenging new Trials is totally ridiculous.

I'll be one of those 50s needing help. I've been hmmmm away on a forward lookout station waiting for the coming storm. i20 has summonded me back to Paragon Isle now how the hell do I get my branches sprouted???

I know the 1st step is to reinstall client but after that, I spent a night trying to get into TF before getting that this is why I left feeling. Is there a waiting/wanting to join list??? MAN THAT WOULD BE SWEET.

Looking forward to making a few runs any directions where to start looking?

Haha very valid point Golden Girl - of course I wasn't referencing those lvl 50's that actually do need/want help, but that so far in my experience, when I have seen the Help Me over their heads and asked them if they needed help, the majority of them have replied no and that they just like the purple color. LOL That's why I suggested the countdown timer thing.

A lot of teams doing the new Incarnate Trials seem to gather in Pocket D, so you could try there first.
You can open the Alpha slot first by running a solo arc from Mender Ramiel at Ouroboros, or you can unlock it by doing one of the new Trials.
