If you want to be an AV killing tool, mind/fire. If you want to apply the control equivalent of a sledge hammer to spawns, earth. If you want to do lots of damage, fire. If you want to do some things others can't really do and be a bit more unique, plant/psy. If you want to only be able to do things others can do better with the exception of AoE phase shift or teleport foe, or shoot pool tables and stuff at bad guys, gravity.
This is one of these "How long is a piece of string" questions, in that you're going to get a bazillion different answers and combos because so many of them are fun.
What sort of playstyle do you want is probably the first question. If you like being in melee and don't mind being squished occasionally Fire, Ice and Elec are probably the three most melee friendly control sets, because all 3 have an Aura type power. Any secondary will tend to go with them, with individual wrinkles to each (NRG does knockback, which some people don't like but I've found Elec/NRG to be an effective combo anyway because the knockback is single target. Psi doesn't do massive melee damage but it has Drain Psyche which can give you more Regen than anyone else in the game if you hit enough enemies with it).
If you like being Ranged Earth, Mind, Plant and Grav focus more on ranged control powers. Fire Assault is the clear leader here because of Embrace of Fire. You can do huge amounts of single target and good AOE damage (domis are never really the kings of AOE damage anyway) with it.
If you like to solo Mind is probably the solo king, grav is its somewhat distant cousin. If you like to team Earth has ridiculous amounts of AOE control patches where Plant brings more AOE damage via Roots and Carrion Creepers.
Elec brings quick recharging, not-quite-as-hard AOE/pseudo-AOE controls which suit steamrolling teams pretty well.
The unfortunate runt of the litter is Gravity Control, the pros of Grav on a Controller are rendered obsolete on a Domi and it takes a long time to get some AOE control on it.
The Domi Combos I have at the mo are :
Ice/Psi : Decent combo although personally I dislike the fact you've to wait until 38 to get your AOE. Psi Scream is kinda annoying too. Drain Psyche is godly though. Tonnes of stacked -recharge.
Earth/Fire : Excellent combo, especially in those situations where you pull 2 or 3 spawns in a Room of Death or some Ambushes decide to come in. Earth has the best Area Control of all the sets. Fire does silly ranged damage. Not the greatest meleer because your PBAOE and your hard hitting melee attack are both Damage over Time
Elec/NRG : Great single target damage and quite a lot of fun. Very good at soloing because Elecs controls are solo friendly and quick to recharge. Knockback takes some getting used to but when you're able to keep a +2 Night Widow on her back (oo-er) with Power Push you come to love it. On teams very good at doing Bad Things to bosses either close up or from range (or one and then the other thanks to Power Push. You can hit Push and queue up Total Focus and clobber them with TF as they are still flying backwards).
Ice/Thorns : Very good meleer, thorns has the best Cone attack of all the secondaries, it's very melee friendly, but takes a while to mature because the two hardest hitting attacks you get at 35 and 38.
earth/fire/fire is a lot of fun. You're basically a fire blaster, but with a control primary.

I've got an Earth/Thorn dominator being worked on, level 13 right now. As I don't know anything about them, can anyone tell me if this combo will hold up as I approach 50?
Please buff Ice Control.
The Doms I've been using:
Mind/Psi/Soul: Jack of all trades, master of control. Has literally every single hard and soft control available in the game, debuffs, single target and AoE damage, 3 damage types, invisibility, the whole package. The only weakness is lack of burst damage. Minions? Lock 'em. Lieutenants? Lock 'em. Bosses? Lock 'em. Elite bosses? Lock 'em. Archvillains? Lock 'em. Giant monsters? *calls buddy dominator* Lock 'em.**
**this with lotsandlotsa +recharge, of course.
Fire/fire/fire: Blaster that happens to have imps and a few controls. Very limited lockdown, but you don't need to lockdown much WHEN YOU CAN BURN THE VERY WORLD TO ITS CORE!! AHHAHAHAHHAAHA! >eherm< Excuse me. *Gets clocked on the head, dying yet again.* What did you just do? I will BE REBORN IN FLAMES! LET MY GRAVE BE YOUR PYRE! AHAHAHA!
Plant/earth. Throw in the seeds of confusion, plant my little vines, pull a mallet from the earth and crush skulls in my fresh little forest of death. /Earth gives some extra control to plant/ and the seeds help bunch up foes for /earth's focused AoE.
Fire/Ice- Still maturing. It took it for the dual slow auras- Ice is middle damage, less upfront, so you won't notice all of it you're doing until all lies dead about you. Oh, and hit power boost to watch them craaaawwwl away in panic.
Mind/energy- Hard controls layered with soft controls. Very satisfying up front damage, and many ways to play with enemies' heads. One of the the lockdown masters. Limited AoE, but darned good at smacking stuff down.
Elec/elec- soft controls with sapping, with so very many layers to put down. The controls are not sudden, and take a bit to reach full power, put once they're down, there is no escaping them.
Okay, I have 3 character slots left and I want to roll 3 Doms to finish out the server. I've read the Dom forums and have seen plenty of builds and combos and I just can't decide what to roll.
I'm looking for any particular purpose for these Doms.. just a fun combo.
All suggestions are welcome and post your builds if you are interested also.
