Laptop Question
I'm on a lappy, an Acer Aspire 5551G, with an ATI Radeon HD 5650, and Ultra Mode runs just fine on max settings. Modern laptops are pretty decent, graphically.

The Mobile 5650 has a shader throughput of 3,600 MTexels.
Given that the starting point for Ultra-Mode support in 1440*900 is around 10,000 Mtexels on AMD hardware, there is no physical way you are running Ultra Mode on Maximum settings.
A list of graphics cards known to be compatible with Ultra Mode is located as a Sticky in the technical support forum: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=251721
OP: Look for a laptop with one of the bottom three cards in each mobile list if you want the game to run well as often as possible.
Buy a Mac, they all have nvidia cards standard now.
The latest gen are now either integrated Sandy Bridge graphics or AMD.

I am considering buying a laptop, which I have never done, and I wanted to know what the requirements would be to run COH in Ultra mode comfortably (video card, ram, etc..). Since I have always been a desktop user my experience with laptops is nill. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I am probably looking to spend around $1200 or so. I have about $100 in Best Buy gift cards so I will probably look there first. Would really like a 17" monitor if possible. I know the Alienware stuff is way out of my price range but a buddy of mine told me the Asus laptop was a decent gaming system. Thanks in advance for all the responses
First off, don't even bother with Best Buy. They'll try to sell you a 15" Alienare job for $1200. It'll be "okay", but isn't really the best deal.
One small problem. 17" laptops with the powerful discrete cards you're looking for aren't cheap.
If the 17" screen is negotiable, I'd actually point you at something like this (nVidia) or this (AMD).
I ws hoping for the 17.3 monitor. I am not a huge BB fan either but I do have some gift cards there which is why I was leaning towards going there if I could find something. Whats the big difference between the link you showed me Hyper and this model for $1300:

Looks pretty similar to one on Newegg but, as I previously stated, I don't know much about laptops. Thanks
Actually I noticed the g73 has a lower max resolutionm 1600x900 vs 1920x1080 in the one you posted Hyperstrike. May have to rethink the bigger screen for the better resolution

And yes, always consider bigger vs higher res.
On the flip side, it also depends on how good your eyesight is. I run at 1920x1200 on my ThinkPad and people ask me if I need a magnifying glass.

The Asus G74 is now available at Best Buy for $1249. I just ordered mine and will pick it up at 11am. The only downsides I expect are more bloatware and BB propbably loaded it with 4 2gb sticks.

EDIT: Just a head's up to people -- the resolution on this sku is 1600x900, which is actually in line with the pricing BB had for the g73 series. For me, that was a bit of a dealbreaker so I cancelled the order. The machine looked nice though.

Here's a G53 from NewEgg for just under 1200. I know I'm happy with my G53 (slightly different model), and it runs Ultra Mode gorgeously.
