April FArt battle
I can empathize Airhead... I spent the whole of last year putting up pencil drawings to compete with (many)
full color digital paintings while always wanting my stuff to be better than it was.
Gotta hang in there though buddy... not participating won't get you anywhere.
I'd make a wind joke or other bad pun at this point "butt" we're already in a thread called the FArt.
No puns with buns in this topic!
Oooh Airhead, don't lose courage! You're 4th sofar and that... really is a great accomplishment imo!
Like CR said.. "Hang in there."
I'll be looking forward to your piece for next month (maybe it helps if you don't check in untill you finished your piece? (check in on this topic I mean. I usually do that, to keep my head focussed on my own piece instead of wondering if it will be any good comparing to the others) It works!

Umm, hokay, no, I wasn't actually scared off. I thought you might read that into my 'precious time' comment, yet you'd still appreciate the much deserved praise. I was in half a dozen countries this month, with another next week where I have to present on a new topic to an audience of 150 people of whom I know one, and most of my team is on various types of leave right now. So stop psyching me! I ain't got time to bleed art. Hopefully next month.

DOH! .. I thought it was April 28th at midnight.. I think I mixed it up with the date for the new coh theme stuff they keep talking about.
I guess it dosent pay to wait till the very last minute when you also have a bad memory for deadlines :*(
(( I was having trouble trying to get easter eggs to fit in a basket held by a 7 inch pixie ))
Okay (late again, I know*) here's my April entry:
* sorry its still in "Work in progress" stage. Still unpacking from the Big Move, and only got internet installed a couple of days ago. Got further along than I thought I would for so little time I had, though!
I'm just happy to be in the contest, really. Its fun and challenging. And I really like the entries of all the rest of you very talented people!
RATS! I HONESTLY thought the deadline was today! Sorry! I blew it!
Ah well, it was still fun! Good luck to the rest of yoU!!!!!
The seventh anniversary of City of Heroes is the 28th, that's when we get the vanguard pack and emotes and other goodies. I cant blame myself to badly, its the date Coh and a few other programs made by the same company are celebrating all at the same time.
anyway, heres my late and past deadline entry also:
kinna hard to see Tartyr eating the ears off a chocolate bunny, or timber pixie wearing a bonnet on her head, on top of whats normaly on her head.
The 7th year anniversary is making me feel quite generous. I'll allow it. But come June, no more Mr. Nice Guy!
Due to a discussion in the vote thread and, if I remember correctly it was wished that discussions wouldn't happen in vote-threads, I thought I'd continue it here
I don't mind people still entering the contest, because, let's face it, participants appear to be hard to get. I thought entering was set till June?
But I actually do think there should be a rule for entering submissions after the deadline.
Like, when you deliver after the deadline and the voting didn't end just yet, you'll get penalty points (like the early-bird rule, but the other way around ).
But that's my opinion!
Carry on!
@Airhead: Lol! Sorry, I misread it then! *giggles*
Next month! Deal!

I for one wouldnt mind having points taken off for late-bird submissions .. after all, sometimes real life dose get in the way.
Yeah, RL can be annoying like that sometimes
Oh and just to be sure people don't understand me wrong... I think it's awesome there is more art added this month! Better late then never!
But as rules are being discussed.. I thought I'd put in my thought .

oh, yes: While I'm happy as punch to be given the extension (really, I appreciate it, Bubba!!!) I'd also be quite happy to get a big point-penalty, or even non-votable status. I wish I had realized before I posted the image that I had missed the deadline! didn't mean to disrespect those who actually got theirs in on time!
Sounds good to me, these current late-comers will be docked 5 points. And remember, starting in June, you can use 15 points to submit past the deadline.

Clearly I need to: 1) drink a bit more coffee, 2) read through the rules more closely, and 3) work faster!
Still, lose or get DQ'd - I'm enjoying the contest, and I thank you for running it, Bubba!
Together!

My 2 cents - I haven't been following the rules. But I looked up Liz's participation for the last 2 months, and she hadn't been in either March or February's entries. I always thought the rule was if you missed a month, you were out of the competition, let alone 2 months.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Liz, as both a person, former team mate (ENVISIONARIES FOR LIFE) and artist extraordinaire... but...
If she can come in after 2 months of not playing, could I have entered one? Again I don't know if there's a rule here that says as long as your entered once in the contest, you could still enter... But doesn't that kind of devalue the contest to a monthly winner, instead of a winner for the year? Again, contrary to my name, I'm not trying to judge, just understand what the rules are.
I would have counted her in my vote otherwise, as she did do a GREAT piece.
Also docking someone 5 points doesn't seem like enough of a deterrent to miss 2 months. That kind of turns the year long contest into a 10 month contest. Let's say you dock them 5 points for every month they miss, and they miss 6 months and still win? Doesn't seem like a fair competition?
If it were me judging the whole thing, I would explain to the voters, that while Liz can still enter, still get votes, she shouldn't be allowed to win more than the months she enters IF she got the most votes that month. BUT because she missed 2 months, she would only get 2nd place for the year by disqualification.
I wish that rule had been in effect the first year Juggy was running it, then I could have missed a month and still been in the other battles. I suppose nothing could have stopped me from still "playing", as a non competitor, but the rules back then when this all started were more severe... not that that they should stay that way, I believe that falls under WHO runs the year, and the kind of competition they want to enforce, either friendly, strict or a mixture of both...
If the stipulation is the more who play the better... I'd like to get in on May.
I've decided to allow Liz into the competition. If I had stuck by the rules I had set up from day one, there would be 2 entries total this month. DD missed January, Lousy Day missed March, Tartyr and Defiance Jones were past the deadline. Things change over the course of several months, so the rules have to adjust as well. I've always envisioned this as a friendly competition, and I like to see as much art come in as possible. Anyone joining this late will be at a *severe* points deficit, and will have to rely on submitting a top 3 piece to be safe from elimination, everyone who has been participating has at least one "safety net" in place, and can stretch that out if they play their cards right. Next month should be interesting, and things should get very interesting come June.
I will say, however, that once eliminations are involved, I promise to be very strict on the rules. So, if you see any problems with them that I may have missed, be sure to let me know.
Ok so we could conceivably be looking at a situation where someone is going to get eliminated, uses points they've accrued as a safety net, and then what? The competition is extended an additional month? Someone who did better in the vote gets eliminated instead?
What if, hypothetically, everyone in the competition used their safety net at the same time except for the person who came in at number one through the actual vote? Would the winner of the actual vote be kicked off the island?
www.battlewraith.deviantart.com
The top 3 are safe no matter what. If everyone uses their safety net, then no one gets eliminated.
This will of course change to 2 and then 1 as the field gets narrowed down. And some months may eliminate more than 1 if needed.
Yay for Liz staying!
And to check if I'm getting this right here about the over-all rules...
I put in blue what I'm not certain of...
Rules:
All types of visual art are acceptable for this month's theme. Screenshot manipulations, sketches, graphic design, etc. So long as they incorporate this month's theme into the work.
Entering this year's F-Art contest can be done monthly up untill the eleminations start in June. But I suggest you start as soon as possible as you may have a disadvantage in points otherwise.
If you don't care about the points or winning.. just enter while you still can!
1. Use City of Heroes/Villains Characters- This is, afterall, a CoX Fan Art competition, so I expect you guys to keep that in mind. If there's nothing relating to City of Heroes/Villains in your entry, you will be disqualified.
2. Keep It PG-13- All entries this month must be postable to these boards without a 2 click.
3. Deadlines;
All entries MUST be submitted by [some date near end of the month]. Anyone participating who DOES NOT have an active account on these boards may note me via deviantArt at Bubbawheat.
Voting will begin by [some date near the end of the month], held here on the CoH boards and end at [date and time].
When a participant, for whatever reason enters his/her submission beyond the deadline, or not at all, before the elemination months start, there will be penaltly points involved for this participant.(read #10)
When the elimination months are active and a participant, for whatever reason enters his/her submission beyond the deadline, panelty points will be involved.(read #10)
When a participant, for whatever reason fails to enter his/her submission for the month he/she is eleminates automaticly unless he/she uses his/her points wisely (read #10).
The pieces that I put up for a vote have been personally verified by me, so if you disagree with their qualifications, please take it up with me rather than the artists.
4. There will be no eliminations until June. Each month artists will accumulate points that will be used to help avoid elimination, or grant other benefits.
8. Points;
Entry points: Artists gain 10 points each month where they submit a piece.
Early bird points: Artists gain an additional 2 points each month where they submit a "finished" piece before the 15th of the month. Finished pieces can still be modified, but any major additions after the 15th will negate the early bird points. Major additions include adding color, or adding an elaborate background.
Place points: After voting, each artist will gain points based on how they place in the final standings. 1st place gains 10 points (plus 2 bonus points for winning), 2nd gains 9, 3rd gains 8, etc. Ties each gain the amount of points for that place. Places after 10th gain 0 points.
Panelty points: When failing to submit or submitting a monthly piece late, before June, it will cost the artist 15 panelty points (read #10 for more info)
9. Prizes;
The artist with the most votes each month will receive 10 million inf sent to them through in game E-mail. The overall winner of the year will receive 50 million. Thanks to Draggynn for his donation to the prize fund.
(European players will have to wait untill the server-merch to get the price.)
10. Uses for points in the elimination months (these may be fine-tuned slightly before June):
5 points: Head Start - find out the next month's theme in advance.
15 points: A Little More Time - Allows an entry to be submitted and/or modified up to 2 days after the deadline. No adjustments will be made for any votes already cast if applicable.**
30 points: Overruled! - If your piece is judged as not being within theme, you can overrule the judgement and have your piece placed in the voting thread anyway (This cannot overrule rules #1 or #2)**
40 points: Immunity - Grants you immunity from elimination for that month - must be declared before voting begins, and can be declared in private. The top 3 based on votes cannot be eliminated due to a large number of immunity buys.
70 points: Saved - Also grants you immunity from elimination for that month but can be declared after voting is over. You can also declare it before voting begins to avoid elimination due to non-entry.
**These rules also count for the months before elemination starts.
This is my interpetation of the rules so far. Correct me if I'm wrong please?

All of that is wrong DD... it's whatever Bubba says so... Just kidding, looks great and crystal clear.
I've only been following fART on and off, but I think the "friendly" status of this competition goes a long way to keep any strife from building. After all this place is our home, not some Olympic Stadium. Even if we had professionals in here from every artistic industry (comic, film, gaming, concept, etc) this place should still have a familiar feel, not be overrun with rules to keep the novice afraid from joining.
I understand the reverse thinking, you want to be the best of the best, but this is probably not the place to find that particular medal. There are plenty of fan art and art art sites for that kind of weekly, monthly competition.
And DD, if you like Liz now, you should play with her in game, she knows her stuff!
Hehehe. Yeah, I love the friendlyness of this battle too ^^. And I agree on not chasing away the novices .
But I also believe there should be basic ru...no.. guidelines. Yes, that's the right word.
Everyone needs guidelines .
As most of the people here doing art aswell, I'm guessing Liz plays on the US server . That would mean I'll have to wait till that merch *giggles* to do so.

An apologue for not making the deadline. I could make excuses, about how my precious time didn't allow me to come here, but then there's the truth. I did make it here, a few times, but every time the competition blew me away. So, you gust it, take it or leaf it, I wind up not regaling with the rest of you. It's going to be a tough vote!
