Manticore & Ghost Widow: What's going on there?

I'm sure you all remember seeing Manticore and Ghost Widow in the GR cinematic trailer. They were accompanied by text suggesting that "allegiances will change" and whatnot.

What I think most of us (if not all of us) gathered from that was, Manti and GW would be switching sides. I mean, we all know that Statesman is a giant jerkwad to Manticore on a regular basis, and we also know that GW really resents Recluse for all the crap he's put her through with her own spirit and Wretch.

Unfortunately, that's all that's ever happened regarding Manti, GW and Going Rogue. Was it just a temptation? Were they never really slated to switch sides? Was that a story line that got pushed to the side because of the Incarnate System?

I don't think there was ever anything to it. Manticore already did the side-switching thing as a ruse once (check out Mender Silos' arc/tf) and Ghost Widow can't really switch sides because she is forever linked to Arachnos.

The implication might have been that Manticore would serve as a role model for those turning to vigilantism, while Ghost Widow would represent rogues.

While I can understand Manticore being thrown into that role, Ghost Widow's story sort of precludes her from engaging in such an "independent" function. She is attached to Arachnos, so what Arachnos wills is what she does, with very little room for leeway. And, I don't know if you've noticed, but Arachnos is $%&!ing EVIL! There's no "rogue" associated with Arachnos, it is solely designed to turn the world into a Hellhole at the whim of its demigod leader. Supposedly, Weaver-1 wasn't much better, either.

Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.

Her story prevents it but I think it's pretty much implied that she has some form of minimal compassion for people in some situation. Actually, while GW is more popular, Scirocco is probably a better candidate for GR since he is specifically cursed to do evil and would rather not do what he does or at least not on the level that he's doing it.

I agree, and his patron arc is one of the most depressing stories I have ever done in the game.

Ah, but what if what's best for Arachnos is to get rid of Recluse?

She does what's best for Arachnos as a whole, not what's "good" or "evil". Right now, getting rid of Recluse would be too distructive to them, but if the benefits ever surpassed the costs, she'd be doing everything she could to take him down. If saving a kitten from a tree furthers Arachnos as a whole, she'll save the kitten. If killing a puppy is what it takes, she'll kill the puppy.

She's not out for money, but she still sounds like a Rogue to me.

As has been said before, and was even discussed when the mechanics/video information first came out, it is a reference to vigilante/rogue players.

Agreed...
Scir really does seem to be a better candidate for Rogue to me than GW. He's not one of the "good guys", but he seems less willfully evil than the rest of that crew. Given the curse business, the results come out looking just as wicked, but the intent isn't the same.

From what I understand, the original developer intent was to have certain existing signature heroes and villains switch sides as part of the Going Rogue story line. However, when they began to plan this out, it quickly became apparently that doing so would screw up a LOT of the existing lore in-game, since they all DO STUFF on their current alignment.

Because of this, they developed the two new characters we got with GR - Maelstrom and Desdamona, and left the existing characters as heroes and villains.

...I forgot what experience means.

I saw the thread title, and thought that this was going to be slightly slashy

My take on the trailer is that Manticore represents changing alignments, good or evil, and Ghost Widow represents loyalty to your cause - like she's on those "undying loyalty" posters that appear in RV when the Villains are winning.

Or maybe the key to understanding Praetoria is Chimera and BV?
