Vanity Powers

Im a sucker for some wasted time. I used to play EQ back in the day when it was at its height and i remember there were plentiful amounts of vanity type powers that had little or no function other than to amuse, entertain, and add depth to a character. I think it is one aspect that coh has not yet developed further but one that i think could ultimately seal the deal in terms of playability and over all attractiveness of the game. Why? Because it's the little things that make a huge difference. Let's say for instance that someone is playing a mind dom. Wouldn't it add leagues more depth to the experience of playing a mind dom if maybe you had a power in which you could control a random NCP and attack as that character. Or maybe an illusion troller might be able to set different appearances on himself/herself and on other players.

I think alot of those sort of vanity powers wouldn't be too difficult to implement and would add tremendous depth to the game.

/Unsigned. Your ideas about "vanity" powers gets lost when you talk about controlling NPC's and changing other people's appearances. Also, please DO NOT assume how easy something would be to implement into the game if you have never seen the coding for the game.

Sure it'd be "nice" to have something like this but clearly the Standard Code Rant Applies here.

Loth 50 Fire/Rad Controller [1392 Badges] [300 non-AE Souvenirs]
Ryver 50 Ele Blaster [1392 Badges]
Silandra 50 Peacebringer [1138 Badges] [No Redside Badges]

I'm really not sure what to say here. The idea of vanity powers is interesting, but the examples given are HORRIBLE. I'd need to hear something more presentable before I can form a solid opinion on the matter.

/unsigned for reasons explained above.

Please don't get discouraged if this idea wasn't well recieved. Not all suggestions are diamonds everyone will love. Maybe you'll have better luck with your next idea.

Lol I hate when people make posts like this. As if their opinion on a specific thought process is the 'right' one.

The OP's idea isn't *bad* as 'environmental effects' in the terms to your powers having some effect on the environment *has* been suggested before, thrown around and requested by others.

The examples given? Yeah, probably not the best.

Thinking about an example of 'vanity' effects:

-Ice powers being able to extinguish fires.

Yes, there's situations were this can be used to great effect (if you're a hero) but the actual usefulness of said ability is very very low. I wouldn't be against similar 'stuff' added to powers...

-I'd actually enjoy, as a villain, to be able to 'affect' certain NPCs. Just take a claws scrapper/brute/stalker into a bank and use Shockwave. That's fun!

-Introducing new outdoor spawns where the bad guys have the hostage tied up. Not a problem if you have a lethal-dmg attack to cut their bonds.

-The spawns where the CoTs are performing rituals, maybe the NPC is left shivering/disoriented but using a click heal/mez resist (like in the medicine pool) instantly fixes them.

-Would be kind of funny if, for villains, they could use mind-control powers on NPCs and make them do random /emotes.

<rolls eyes>

Yeah What a jerk I am for encouraging the OP to keep thinking of ideas and suggesting them rather than getting discouraged by people not liking this idea.

I actually don't see a problem with the NPC one, but I'd leave it limited to minions, maybe LT, rank enemies.

That said, Confuse sort of does the same thing, without you actually controlling them, doesn't it?

The illusion idea makes lots of sense, in a shouldn't an illusion maker beable to do such a thing type of way. The problem comes in the griefing players would endure from other players who just want to be dumb.

Think people complain now about drive by buffs? Just imagine drive by illusion casting.

The OP may not have been playing long enough to be familiar with how drive by buffing pisses off some players or how other players try to use certain powers to disrupt other players enjoyment of the game.

When I hear the term "vanity powers" the first thing I think of are powers that would do nothing else but make you look 'cooler' than everyone else. Bestow extra fancy auras, or what not..

Kinda like the "vanity mounts" in many other MMO's, that functionally are no different than standard mounts, but have unique looks about them.

I could get behind this idea, they could be locked by a badge, or accolade, of varying difficulty to obtain.

I'd rather have dance emotes like a few other games first.

Or at least a modded version of the Karate Dance, without the hand strikes and kicks, and just the hip sway, arms up and bended at the elbows part.

Well said, I concur!

I interpreted the original posters' "controlling NPCs" suggestion to mean random pedestrians, not actual enemy combatants, but that opens up a different set of problems. (It'd be utterly hilarious, though)

The only "vanity" powers I really want is the ability to use Costume Change emotes as regular emotes, without actually having to change my costume (or make two identical costumes and just switch costume slots)

No offense taken. This was just for fun, as the title of the forum suggests. Just ideas. /extinguish_nerdrage

That's a healthy attitude to have. Sometimes we've had people take criticism / disagreement with ideas as personal attacks.
