Memory Upgrade Question

Posted

Thinking about upgrading my memory, just too tech ignorant to know if I am gonna run into any major problem in doing so. I am looking at getting 8GB of G-Skill DDR3 1600 on my Asus M3N72-D mother board. I'm worried about getting the RAM then needing to replace the mobo to use it.

This is my current Mobo

This is the RAM I would like to upgrade to

you're mobo only supports DDR2 1066. DDR3 will not fit.

one more thing, I don't know if you know this, but Windows wont recognize more than 3.something GB of RAM unless you are using a 64 bit version.

Thank you

In addition, City of Heroes will only use about 1.5 GB of memory max, so even if you're on a 64bit operating system, you wouldn't gain much of any benefit by going beyond 4 GB of RAM (although other things might, especially if you run other heavy applications at the same time).

Thinking about it I am not so sure that the game is restricted to 1.5 gig of ram even in a 32 bit OS. I'll need to check after this extended down time. Most 32-bit programs are able to address up to 2 gig of ram and there are ways to increase that.

All in all more ram = more system speed including COH. If for no other reason because the OS will do more caching and there is less competition for ram space and less VM access.

This is from microsoft: doesn't format well to the forums. Basically says the default memory available in 32-bit systems is 2 gigs max per process and 3 gigs if a certain library is used with the code.

Memory type Limit in on X86
User-mode virtual address space for each 32-bit process

2 GB

Up to 3 GB with IMAGE_FILE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE and 4GT

There gets a point where you won't be seeing any benefit from additional RAM. If the system is able to keep all the files it's regularly accessing cached in RAM, and the programs you're using have already reached their limit... you're not gonna benefit from more RAM.

The special switch only works with programs compiled using that special flag (plus, windows also has to be started with a special flag), if you tried to forcibly set it on the CoX executable (i.e. hex editing the file), Bad Things could very well happen (especially if any code depends on the normal top of the user space address space).

Also, for whatever reason, City of Heroes will never use more than 1.5 GB of RAM, even if Windows technically allows it to use more. You can see this in practice, while CoX is running, fire up Task Manager and it won't pass that magic number, even if you have unused RAM.

I've seen 1.78GB and friends of mine have seen over 1.8GB usage. Too bad it's usually a memory leak and usually CoX crashes out soon after.

That, to me, suggests the Devs have intentionally limited the internal data structures to use no more than 1.5 gigs of memory, but could bypass that limit if data is leaked (and leaked data is no good, since it's unaccounted for).

Pretty sure it has gone above 1.5GB for me regularly, regardless of whether the memory has been leaking or not. It could depend on what settings you have for graphics and Ultra mode as well.

That may well be, however as COH does not run in a vacuum, OS, Drivers Etc all along side of it, some quite large, I can say the point of diminishing returns for available ram to still add a noticeable speed increase to the game is greater then 8 gigs. I believe the OP was asking taking his machine to 8 gigs, right?

3.5GB is the maximum if your running 32-bit even if you have 4GB, 6GB or even 8GB in your system.64-bit will run more.

Well it's 4GB minus whatever is allocated for hardware such as graphics cards, hard drive controller, etc. It varies.
