Interview with the physicist that will appear after the Firefly reruns

His predictions of what we can hope to have in terms of tech in the late 21st century.

I'll give him points for having vision and optimism, but at least he agrees that warp drive and transporters are long ways away.

Hard to argue with those choices, but if Data was one that we wish were real then his brother Lore should be on the list of ones we glad are not.

Daleks aren't really robots. They're mutants riding inside small tanks.

I've read his books because I like to read popular science for fun as an outgrowth of my interest in science fiction and I find Kaku entertaining but somewhat uneven. His predictions always strike me as hedging a little. Erring on the side of caution is what a good scientist does, but I want some crazy-*** predictions I can scoff at in 5 years' time, dangit.

One of the ways I find Kaku's opinions uneven is encapsulated in the last item of that interview. Why does he assume we'd bring water from Earth? Let's face it, even for terraforming Mars that's a dumb and impractical idea. Just throw some comets at a planet -- boom: water, atmosphere, basic carbon building blocks. Also, there are no warp drives in Firefly -- all those planets and moons in the series and the movie are in the same solar system. So we don't know how long it took to terraform those worlds or how long it took to get there. It could very easily have taken hundreds of years for that to happen.

Well, if String Theory ends up going nowhere, then you'll be able to scoff at Kaku's entire life's work

I like Dr. Kaku, too. I read his book Hyperspace in high school, which introduced me to Flatland. And he seems like a pretty down-to-earth guy for a theoretical physicist. Too bad he's no Feynman, though. We need more physicists doing Nobel Prize winning work in strip clubs.

Goodbye, I guess.

I disagree with the bad robot list on including HAL 9000. Yeah, he went bad in 2001, but anyone watching 2010 would find out why HAL flipped.
