It’s a hilarious film, and while it has its warts, it holds up well to both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
Pretty much all I need to hear.

The way I figure is that even a "bad" Pegg/Frost movie is likely going to be better than a lot of other movies out there.
I'm looking forward to this one.

Aintitcool is similarly guarded but positive in its review:

Yes, PAUL also has action, special effects, and alien probe jokes, but I was pulled in my it's {sic} slightly more subtle elements, and I think you will be too. There are some extremely smart observations about science fiction and its devoted followers, as well as some surface jabs at easy, slow-moving targets. But overall, I had a great time watching PAUL because there is a degree of character emphasis that I wasn't expecting. I think it saves the movie, actually, and separates it from other recent R-rated comedies.
It seems like the recommendation boils down to "come for the alien anal probe jokes, stay for the characterizations."

Huge fan of Shaun of the Dead here. I look forward to these guys in any movies. Good stuff. Can't wait to see it.

I don't know if I'll see this, at least not right away. I'm waiting on The World's End, which will be the third and final chapter of the Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy.

I have a hard time not thinking of Pegg as "the skinny Scotty" nowadays.

Actually I'm still having a hard time thinking that yet. I like Pegg and I think he did a good job in the Star Trek movie. I just think out of all the new actors him being Scotty was the "farthest stretch" to my suspension of disbelief. All the others kinda-sorta looked like the original actors well enough. Pegg? Not so much. He was the "odd man out" at least from a looks point of view.

I'm sure by the time the next Star Trek movie comes out I'll finally be able to "visually" accept him as the new Scotty.

Every trailer I've seen makes me think "Hey look, American Dad's Roger is tooling around with Simon Pegg in an RV"... this does not entice me to want to see the movie.
