Beyond the search tool in the team window (/search), scroll down the forums to your server's board and look up the global channels they use.
"My inner mind has become a reality-cracking overgod. He torments me! Help!"
There is the search window. Open Team on your game window and you can search for players there. Purple names are team leaders.
All servers will have server-wide channels where teams are formed. If you state which server you're on, I'm sure someone will post a list of channels on your server.
You can also search for channels by clicking on the tab button of your chat window and doing search. Start using your server name. Join channel. Then right click on a chat tab and you can move that channel into whatever tab you want by moving it from the right window to the left.
Welcome.
EDIT:
I'd use the server global channels. There are plenty of knowledgeable people there. Who will give you real advice.

First off, welcome to the game and to the forums!
While you can set your "looking for team" flag, under the search window, the best ways to find teams reliably are to join an active super group or a global channel. I would head down to your server's forums, and ask what a good global channel is to find teams.
Also, a shout out to the Mentor Project, which you can find stickied at the top of the Player Questions forum. They love to help out newer players in-game.

You can set your OWN lft status by hitting the Team button in the bottom left.
The LFT tool is an excellent way to form groups and I strongly encourage you to use it. It can be brought up by typing /sea .
Thanks, I started playing in 2005 and never really did much. Seems there is a lot more now. I'm glad I'll be able to find groups now though. I was having all kinds of issues with some missions.
Also, if you're looking for ingame assistance from knowledgeable players on your own server - even have them team with you, add the N P C channel to your chat tab (/chanjoin "N P C").
All servers are covered by our generous volunteers, NA and EU.
More info about this if you follow the Mentor Project link in my sig.

Also, if I lead a team, I will invite those who have 'looking for team' set before those who don't.
I've been playing for a year now, and found that people would rather join teams than lead a team. There are very few leaders, so very few teams. When I form a team, I broadcast in a busy zone and I get 3-5 replies within a minute. Then I fill in the remaining spots using the search tool.
One thing I need to add to my little guide and I want to share is that if you see someone's name in Purple in /sea (I think they would HAVE to be "not looking for team / gray") that means that person is a team leader! While there is no direct way to search for team leaders to my knowledge, if you narrow the filters, particularly the level range and origin filters, you can get a glance of who is leading a team and see if you can get a quick invite.
Though, that is an act of desparation or when you want to merge teams, I guess. I haven't had to do that but once last month, but it worked .
I'm new and I know its a dumb question but I have a hard time finding groups of any kind is there any tool for LFG? or a channel or something?
