I think one thing that this month has made pretty clear - a lot of the time it's not always about the technique and detail in your work as it is about the overall concept. Lousy Day's piece might not be the most detailed, but it had one of the best concepts. The same can be said about Darth Delicious's piece - for a black and white sketch it made up for the lack of polish with a strong concept. Just something to think about for future months.
Well, I can't help replying to this...it's in my nature. First of all, how is anyone to anticipate what the voting public is going to regard as a better concept? Why is a cat eating an ice cream cone a better concept than an ice blaster standing over his frozen victim--which happens to be an identifiable villain group from the game? This month and last month Chris submitted basically headshots that did very well. Where's the concept?

Content is subjective. Execution is something that can actually be objectively appraised. You can look at a piece and see that an artist done more in terms of composition, anatomy, perspective, etc. If execution isn't going to be a defining factor, why bother putting work into it? It's a crapshoot, there's no telling what people are going to like with the theme changing every month.

I agree that there's no predicting what people will react to as a concept. And that in some cases just having an excellent technique is enough. But I think maybe the word I was looking for was a clear concept can often take you to the next level. Not trying to beat this into the ground, or pick on him (because I do think it's a technically great piece) but I don't see a clear concept from TBA's piece. Is he gloating over his victory? Is he smiling after a job well done? It's just not entirely clear. But you're right, on the flipside, I thought that Airhead had a great, original, and funny concept, but that didn't translate to a lot of votes. So yeah, there's no predicting tastes. But I stand by the suggestion that having a good, clear concept will help in the long run.

Hmm. T'be fair, the concept for mine was a little lazy. But then, Fire and Ice was too good a chance to pass up to draw Z22 Pyre Fox (Jan) and X21 Ice Wolf (Feb).

You also have to throw into the mix that these aren't professional judges voting based on a clear set of criteria but rather just random Schmitz voting based on whatever they feel like. Some may value technique over concept, some may feel fitting the theme is most important. Still, some may vote just for friends, to encourage people or based on how well they artist did compared to perceived talent level. Heck, there's probably almost as many different combinations of what is considered as there are voters...

Personally my votes are all contingent upon what the alien who lives in my shoe tells me to vote for...

I accept that criticism for my January submission... it is a headshot (I happen to be good with those)
of a fire tank and Brahn is not doing anything or reacting to anything he is just looking out at the viewer.
That said, I think it did exactly what what it needed to (convey fire and be instantly recognizable as CoH branded).

February's entry however, while it does contain a headshot in it, I think has a strong concept apparent.

I'm trying to create what I think people will enjoy seeing to the best of my ability and
bear in mind I have done less than half a dozen digital colorings... ever.

I know as a novice that I'm not going to pick up a brand new copy of Photoshop CS5 one day and
a few weeks later be challenging Lousy Day on technical painting skills, (lol I wish) it's just not gonna happen.
My entries may not look like much to someone who's old hat at this stuff but they represent big steps forward for me.
They include several new things I had never tried before and many new techniques, that just a few days prior I
wondered how the hell people were doing that, are now being applied. To call the results
"just a simple portrait" I think is failing to see the forest for the trees.

We all have to start somewhere and I think I'm doing pretty good all things considered.

**and in the spirit of good natured trashtalking **

P.S. I'm sorry I was so busy winning that first month, I must've missed the rule saying we would
be judged based on our concept. Could you post a link or something?

Lol Chris if you scroll up in this thread you will see Bubba's suggestion on having a clear concept. I responded to his post because:

1. He's running this competition and I think the person in charge often sets the tone.
2. The results so far don't agree with what he's saying. I mentioned your entries simply because they underscore the point.

Suggestions do not a rule make.

1. Agreed a good theme (and/or the person choosing it) can set the tone.
2. Fair enough. I just felt compelled to reply... it's in my nature n stuffz.

Lol.

I never said it was, or should be a rule. I think you quoted me out of context and are missing the point.

Neither actually.
I copied your entire post when responding. It is, by definition, in context.

When partially quoting someone you are of course taking a portion of their words out of context... that's what a quote is.
Strange you would find this confusing.

Furthermore when I do partially quote someone using the forum quote function I use a long strand of dot's before, after or both (.............. like this .............) to indicate their is more to the post not being seen so if the reader wants to scroll up and read the original context he/she is free to do so. When not using the built in function and quoting someone verbatim I will actually "put the words in quotes" (I know, weird right? ) as I did 4 posts up. It's common courtesy, avoids confusion and gives the reader a choice in how far they want to read into the subject. It would be nice if more people were that thoughtful and considerate when quoting.

Hope that clears up any confusion you are having.

P.S. I think you meant to say...
I never said they were, or that they should be rules .................
... as "Suggestions" is plural.

I have no preferences for either of you guys, you're both dang awesome. But once the talk turns to legalese, I am inclined to poke fun.

A copy of a post is not the definition of "context". I don't think you believe that either, you're taunting - in which case there's a subtext (ooh see what I did there) that I'm not entirely aware of If you posted the whole thread, and perhaps the March voting thread too, you might have the defined context. Aside from the vast history I bet you guys have!

Muahaha.

We actually don't have a whole lot of history and usually get along great outside the forums (email, livestream, etc) or really
anytime we are not debating minor technicalities related to the FArt. He is obviously talented and very experienced with photoshop.
Also he's left me valuable critique in the past and we've even collaborated on two pieces (this being one of them) so I really don't know what it is.

Perhaps it's the competition or something else that is bothering him?

Lol pardon me Chris are you now assessing my mental state in addition to lecturing me on grammar?

The only thing that bothers me is when when someone misrepresents something I've said. You took one sentence from my post and took it to mean the opposite of the whole. I'm not going to get into a rhetorical pissing contest over it--it doesn't come across as enlightened, it's just tedious and anal-retentive. Just go back and read my post that elicited this ****, it's pretty clear that I am not telling Bubba that having a "concept" should be part of the rules.

Hahaha it's not vast but I could send you a couple interesting emails.

I used both a smiley and a sticks-out-tongue to indicate humor for that bit of trashtalk.
I even prefaced it by literally saying it was going to be trashtalk.

I'm sorry but there are more important things going on in the forums than going round and round this with you Jason.
PM me if you wish to talk further otherwise I'm moving on.

That's a good idea Chris. Go do something productive with your time.

**Sigh**

If by this you mean offering my condolences to a friend here who just lost loved ones in a tragic accident or visiting my RL friend in the hospital or holding a multi-round contest to give away more free art or helping half a dozen or more artists with tips and encouragement through PM's and email improve their skill or setting up threads where people can share tips here (and another for collaborations), trying to grow our community by encouraging several DA artists who draw CoH stuff to come post over here, offering constructive critique... etc. etc. etc. Then yes I am doing more productive things.

But not because you said so.

You know over in the March FArt thread I was having a difference of opinion with Airhead over something silly too. He posted a comment which I could've easily responded to and escalated the issue but he also said thank you to me for catching a missed vote for him. I chose to take the out, said your welcome Airhead, and moved on.

Here in this thread I gave you several easy outs (one even had multiple compliments), you ignored them all.
I then announced I wanted to leave the thread and invited you to private message me if you wanted to pursue this so we don't have to belabor the public with this nonsense.
You ignored that too and instead chose to get a parting shot in.

Petty disputes WILL happen on a forum, that's inevitable, but when they do it says a lot about your character if you see an opportunity to bow out gracefully, and you actually take it.

P.S. By the way I caught an overlooked vote for you as well you know. Just last month.
But in direct contrast to Airhead you seem to be ignoring all the good things I do and just leave
comments on what you are choosing to see as upsetting (after starting this whole thing to begin with).

You are also the only one here stooping to profanity and name calling... think about it.

Chris I posted a comment in this thread to Bubba. He responded. I was done with this thread.

The only one belaboring anything here is you. First to defend your entries, which was unnecessary because I didn't attack them. Then to "trashtalk" me, apparently because I mentioned you. Then to lecture me (incorrectly) on quoting and use of plurals. And so on.

You're giving me an easy out? Of what? Explain exactly what I'm bowing out from and maybe I'll consider it. But throw some strawmen at me and put words in my mouth and I'll respond. Get smarmy and tedious and I'll tell you you're smarmy and tedious.

Lol the irony. Pot meet Kettle. Send me a pm whenever you like, I'm too lazy to message people over nothing.
