Final Tweaks on Dark Melee/Shield Scrapper: Kind of Stuck

Alright, I'm posting this as its own thread..... I'm sort of stuck on a few things.

Before I post my build, I want to say I'm not quite sure of the entire direction of the build, but I am trying to keep in mind Alpha slotting. My initial thought is to go recharge so I can get Shield Charge/Soul Drain up ASAP. But I am not opposed to other ideas, if damage is better for instance.

So this build has the Spiritual Alpha slotting in mind.

Now here's the catch: My primary slotting concern is positional defense WITHOUT the incredibly expensive/rare: Gladiator/shield wall Origins, or the Hami-O's.

With that said, here's what I've got:

The only important stuff I'd like to add to the above:

-Again, positional defense is an issue. (Or do you recommend smashing/lethal?)
- I am not too stuck on Grant Cover. I have slight end issues (that I hope this build will solve)
- I love Siphon Life, but am not too sure on the slotting. I love the heal, but it's a great attack.
- I prefer to keep Shadow Maul. I actually have always liked it for minion clean up in a set not too known for AoE.
- The one set of Hecatomb's you see is a work in progress, but that's my goal to slot it.
- Again, I have no idea if I am overslotting for recharge, but please consider the Spiritual Alpha.
- Slotting bonus' are frustrating me. Do I go for the cap? At what cost? I suppose I could ditch some something for Maneuvers, but I'd have to let another toggle go, as I'm already toggle heavy. Right now I'm slotting positional defense first, and then hitpoints. Is this a bad idea?

Thanks for any feedback.

Just switchin Assault for Maneuvers and putting in hami def/end will cap you to all three and is a pretty straight forward and easy fix without even touching anything else.

I think to cap your DDR you will need the hami's for active defense, which I think is a bug but it works on my sd/stone tank right now. Also grant cover has DDR in it so you want to keep it. I think every sd toon should take it, especially with inherent fitness, but I hardly see anybody take it. Its a great team buff, has DDR, and is a perfect mule for LotG.

Just changed Assault/manuevers and slotted siphon life a little different. The heal hami is really pretty cheap.

Thanks for the suggestion..

I'm not sure the relevance of the Hami O in Maneuvers, but even just adding Maneuvers gets me to the softcap, so that's good.

Also, why the Frankenslotting of Siphon Life? What does that do for me exactly (aside from the obvious downfall of losing 5% global recharge)?

The hami in maneuvers was to both increase its def and lower its end cost by a lot, with one slot. You can actually prob gt them really cheap, i just bought the dam/acc one for 10 mill, think ppl are flooding the market with the synthetic ones from STF/LRSF, so you can probably luck out.

The frankenslotting was for:
+8 Acc
+6 Dam
+9 End redux
+16 recharge
-6 heal (only decrease, and with 16 more recharg i think its worth it)

If your that committed to the 5% recharge keep it your way, this way it is just more accurate, does more damage, costs less end, recharges a lot faster, but does heal for less.

The build isn't perma hasten (which I'm not sure if you can do on a /sd scrap and stay at softcap, but I could be wrong) so 5% isn't gonna make or break probably.

I just think with a dm/sd scrap, a 10% buff to damage isn't that critical, you should be getting plenty of damage boosts from soul drain and AAO.

There could be a way just as easy to switch some slotting and get softcap and keep maneuvers, but you essentially need 3 bonuses (one for each position) or throw down the money for the glad +3, which for me is worth it on your main (if this is your main), but I wouldn't spend it on a toon im not playin all the time.

Just looked at build, and I'm not seeing you losing a 5% recharge bonus from siphon life slotting being changed, you have 2 sets 3 slotted, so you only get the first two bonuses of each.

Here is slotting that increases all, 9 acc, 7 dam, 9 end, 10 heal, 24 recharge. It does have two hami's though, but the heal one is usually cheap, and the acc/dam one could be purchased really cheap. If you can't get one real cheap send me a tell in game and I'll give you one, im on freedom too. I know you didn't want hami Os, but they cheap right now, and on my dark/inv scrap, siphon life is by far my favorite power. He is a vampire toon so it fits him a lot themeatically for me.

Sorry, I don't know what the heck I was thinking.... posting from work so I don't know what I was looking at. lol

Thanks for explaining the Frankenslot. I wasn't sure what the advantage would be but I do agree it's beneficial to milk that power for all it's worth (Siphon Health). Great power, but hard to leverage for all it's good for.

I like the changes and I still have 2 slots left! I may just swap assault for maneuvers anyway to get over the cap a bit to compensate for the latest trend of enemy accuracy.

Something else to mention as far as HO's go, is you can always run STF hero side or LRSF villain side and pick the Synthetic Hami-O reward to try and get some HO's that are useful for this combo. I have a bunch in my DM/Shield, and bought most of them, but I did pick up a few as the reward on these Task Forces as well. They are great for shoring up certain aspects of builds or for powers like Siphon Life that have so many things you want to maximize their enhancement of. (I six slotted Siphon Life with 3 Golgis and 3 Nucs and am quite happy with the results)

Don't I know you???

well I was able to make a pretty good build with no super rare recipes (I think the most expensive is obliteration) if you want some ideas here is the build

this is actually better than the one I am currently using the obliteration set in shadow maul is actually sciroccos dervish and the performance shifter in dark consumption is efficacy adapter in game and numinas covalence is replaced with makos bite if I remember correctly. I farm at +4x8 with a team and I can tank +0 avs with minimal problems. It is also a pre i19 build so you have an extra 3 powers you can choose since fitness is inherent now.

This build is a great reminder of what you can do without going all out and breaking the bank. I mean you really found a way to get a tremendous amount out of positional defense. Some would say too much!

It's like you said the build is pre i19 so it has some holes that don't need to be there due to inherent fitness. You build has better defense than mine... that's for sure.

When I look at that build I see the different slotting a full set of red fortunes can make. I have sacrificed my 6th slot for the LotG's 7.5% global recharge. I thought I was being conservative by just getting my global recharge to 137%.

Right now you have me second guessing that, but the idea of hitting Soul Drain-Shield Charge-Siphon Life as often as possible is big.

Right now I'm Alpha slotting for recharge, so perhaps I can lay off the LotG's for more defense? Something to think about.

I have redone my build... so many times... I gotta decide.

Thanks for the build example. It's a fine, inexpensive way to get your positional defenses up!

They are great for shoring up certain aspects of builds or for powers like Siphon Life that have so many things you want to maximize their enhancement of. (I six slotted Siphon Life with 3 Golgis and 3 Nucs and am quite happy with the results)
I just have to say this is one of the best pieces of 'new' build advice I have put into my scrapper. Last night I went and picked up 2 Synthetic Golgi, and 2 Synthetic Nucs and I think I'll go recharge/damage and recharge/heal for the other two slots. THIS was pretty big. It was notable, and as you said I am squeezing more out of the beauty that is Siphon Life.

As an after thought.... we are talking about some of the hard to get recipes/enhancements and it appears I probably won't get the Gladiator's +3 def because I refuse to 'grind' that much for one item....

So another thought came to me.... I used to design a lot of AE stuff before it became a ghost town, and I'm wondering what the best way to take advantage of the tickets I have saved up? Could I get something this toon could use? Or is it just random recipe rolling?

Glad to hear that I was able to help ya some.

I've been saving a-merits up on a character for awhile now, to purchase one of those Glad +3% def. I've been distracted, so it has taken longer than it normally should, but I'm up to 24 now. I was going to use it, but I think I will find more use from the money I would make selling it.

As far as tickets go, I tend to do Bronze rolls and craft just about everything that is moderately useful and sell it. I've made a lot of money this way. I also know some people redeem the tickets for rare salvage and sell that on the market. Level 35-39 will yield some pretty good recipes chances as well. Here is a chart of the recipes that drop by level range.

Ok this might be it...

This is based on the new Hami O advice. And some more experience trying -not- to use Dark Consumption. What I found is... Dark Consumption is just too valuable to me.

I find it fills the hole for Endurance in massive scraps. This build is a touch end heavy, and I can hang in for long periods with the cycling of Dark Consumption and Conserve Energy. (I give up One with the Shield to do this.)

This build goes a touch beyond soft cap. There is some weird slotting though. I give up 5% recharge to keep my hitpoints up, but again, so far I am alpha slotting Recharge.

So how many AE merits is a glad +3? I have saved about 1100 tickets.

I'll check that link out too. Thanks.

Yea, I see that now.... so safe to say I won't have one unless it drops for me. Even if one was for sale it would be... a brazillion influence. I'd rather flesh out the build for that kind of dough.. I've hit the soft caps + a bit anyway.

I thought my thread was done....

But after last night I am seriously re-thinking my Alpha choices.

Long story short, I got through States task force, but with serious wife aggro. So this is not something I'm going to be able to sit down and do weekly, and I want to have a fairly good understanding of which Alpha to stick with, at least to the Rare levels.

I didn't make anything last night with my loot... because I realized I may go the Musculature route. Recharge for DM/Shield has obvious advantages:

Spirtual Positives:
- class defining powers come up more often (obviously). Specifically: Siphon Life, Soul Drain, and Shield Charge. To have these come up more often would be awesome. But how often? Not sure yet.

Musculature Positives:
- In a power match up that is really decent at single target 'ka-pow' factor, Musculature would leverage the Against All Odds/ Soul Drain Factor and completely mess anything up pretty darn fast. Plus we can build 'decent' recharge builds as it stands.

I think part of the problem is I guess we in general don't really know what using rare/very rare Alpha's is going to do in actual game play.

I keep imagining Statesman in that endgame mission thread.... I mean that is STELLAR damage. Who cares if you can get shield charge up 2 times a mob if you can do that?

I think if I were talking Claws for example, then Musculature would be a no-brainer. But DM/Shield has a lot of very high utility abilities that 'hyper-cycling' would truly benefit them.

Above all else, I would strive to get membranes (at least 2) into active defense. Yes, they're expensive, but they're worth it.

Softcap and DDR go hand in hand, if you don't have one the value of the other is lessened.

Posted

uhg... this gets more expensive by the post. lol

Ok, so if I shell out for two membranes in AD, I get above the cap with Grant Cover, I get above the cap, correct?

Still looking for advice on Alpha slotting this guy...anyone?

Musculature has some advantages for a DM based character.

You can short slot damage (66% or more from slotting should be fine), allowing you to make sure you get enough recharge and Acc from slotting. This can be helpful in powers like Siphon Life, where you may want to drop one of the Nucleolus and put a recharge in instead. The Spiritual allows for a similar thing though, you could drop a Golgi, since Spiritual also comes with Healing (handy for True Grit, PP, and Health as well). In your build, I think only Smite and Siphon would fully benefit from Musculature (well Soul Drain and Dark Consumption too), as you want to six slot the other attacks for the defense bonuses.

But the Musculature also gives +Immob, potentially handy in MG vs. tougher foes. +End Mod, good for Stamina, Dark Consumption, and Physical Perfection. To-hit debuff, great for all the DM attacks. And you can run faster too.

The big question, in my mind, is can the Spiritual get MG and SL recharging fast enough for Smite-MG-Smite-SL?

Of course, Nerve can give you more defense, but I have not looked deeply into that and how it relates to your build.

Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
Tactics are for those who do not have a big enough hammer. Wisdom is knowing how big your hammer is.

Strato,

You make a good point... in fact I never really concerned myself with an attack chain, but instead I was hoping to cycle big damage, and AoE more by cycling Soul Drain/Shield Charge.

I know if I were cycling the 'alpha' powers in DM, I'd probably drop Shadow Maul like everyone else, but truthfully, I love the power.

I'm thinking the Spirtual, Rare Partial Core Revamp will give me 33% recharge and heal, making my heal even stronger (17% ignores ED?).... and I'll fire it off more often, as well as the powers I mention above.

BUT with Musculature Rare Total Radial Revamp I would get to see bigger orange numbers (which in theory means a fight is shorter) and the added Endurance mod gives me less need for a power like 'Conserve Power'. The truth is though I have 'Assault' now and it's really just 10%... it doesn't feel like much and I think it would amount to about 17% of extra damage by going Musculature Radial Revamp Rare....

The other oddball consideration is you can use an inspiration for a lot of things.... defense, damage, etc... but you can't take anything for recharge.

Ok, I didn't want to do a respec for the Spiritual Alpha slot in mind until I posted this to be certain....

This puts me over soft cap on positional defense, but still gives me respectable recharge. The problem is, he's a bit of an endurance hog. Not much I can do there....

There is ONE slot in Tough that is open just in case I actually do 300 hero missions and end up with a Gladiator +3 which would put my defenses about 6-8% over cap I believe.

So end hog it is? I think the damage is good... and I can't find another way to juggle the defense without hurting myself some other way.
