How to deal with vent/skype players

And it's a given that the person telling you this was a self-identified voice-chatter.

Yeah, nothing quite blows immersion like a Dr. Girlfriend voice on that dainty elf maiden, while the aged priest is warbling like an adolescent boy and swearing like a trucker, while the Paladin is getting over a cold and sounds like he's not only hacking up both lungs, but most of his other internal organs too.

Meanwhile, the guy who types clear, concise, perfectly understandable sentences in the chat window has an accent so thick you need a monowire to cut it, and just forget UNDERSTANDING it.

Not to mention all the background noise (yup, that's mom beating on dad with a frying pan) and the like.

As someone who uses Vent rather frequently for teams and other things, I find it polite to repeat instructions via chat if not everybody in the team is on the server talking to us. I will, however, also say that having Vent running can be very distracting, especially if there are a lot of people talking at once, as is often the case with my SG's vent. And if several members of the team are talking over voice chat, team chat often winds up being rather quiet. I do not, however, close chat tabs or go afk from a team without announcing it in chat.

Again though, that's not the thing. I don't think many people care if no one is TALKING in team chat. It' the people who are NOT paying attention to team chat or even the GAME because they're too busy chatting with people not even on the team.

I'm a little confused because ToonX clearly did use chat to ask for a reinvite... so they must use Chat in some level, or have I misunderstood that?

I cannot say I've heard anyone play like that before but from the way you describe, it's simply a case of them being bloody minded.

The thing is, it's relatively safe to assume if you can play this game you can read and type. Same can't be said for voice chat ; there's people with hearing disabilities, people who can't afford to be cut off from real life by using headphones nor making noise through speakers (i.e. single parent).

I use voice chat a lot. I have a group of friends whom I voice chat with pretty much all the time when playing. However, it's just like other people said. I never close my Chat tabs and always pay attention to the game channels (at least the team channels). If I'm running a TF I normally invite people to join us in voice chat if they so wished, even to just listen. I don't say my instructions in voice but type them in team chat for those who aren't on the call with us.
It's just like many others said. It's not a problem with voice chat, it's simply a problem with the player himself. IMO, voice chat is fun, and makes some events (like Master of Runs, Cathedral of Pain runs [get the team leaders together on voice chat], and other stuff, or even just the shard TFs because they take quite a bit longer than any other TF in the game). Of course there are drawbacks to it..mainly the background noises you randomly hear now and then. Or inviting a PuG from the team on the call only to realize you've gotten yourself involved with a a weirdo from Mars or a pervert who swoons when realizing we have *gasp* GIRLS ON THE CALL! (yeah...happened before, lol).

Anyways, long story short. Voice chat isn't to be faulted, it's the player.

my personal thoughts on voice chat are that while I don't like to use it I will if most of the rest of the team is. The reason I don't like to use it is I work in a call Center. Which means I wear a headset ALL FREAKIN DAY. The last thing I WANT to do when I'm off is wear a headset.

Why? It's not like this game requires a huge amount of communication of strategy.

Sure, voice-chat isn't necessary, but that's how they want to communicate (and I imagine it'd be better on both sides if you don't try to force people to communicate in a means they don't want . And can make a good argument that even text chat isn't really necessary for a lot of content either.
If they are recruiting through the voice chat then they won't get non users joining. If they are recruiting through the in game chat, then they need to accept some people aren't set up for voice chat and either state you must have it to join, or use the text chat too.

Yes, and as I mentioned, it isn't necessary for any content in this game.

But that's how they want to play, and it's better that the two differing views not group together. Forcing them together would be more awkward than a bromance between Positron and Captain Mako. It's better for both sides to just not intersect .

Exactly, don't try to force it to work if you don't want to . Given that there's not built-in voice chat for the game, the sharing of details must happen at some point for it, which is as good a time as any to resolve such differences [preferably before action actually starts].
