this is going to be the first toon that ive ever put sets into

about how much would this build would cost me?

can i start this build even tho im level 47?, considering you can use so's within 4 levels of the level on the enchancement

can the kismet , energy manipulator, and mircale sets still be used even tho they are a lower level enhancement? will i still get the set bonus and each individual bonus?

i made all of this on mid'heros so im not sure... and id prefer not to spend a lot of money for it to not work...

Depends on if you buy it all as crafted enhancements, or as recipes, or spend merits on stuff. If I had to guess, I'd say the build as it is will run you around 350 million altogether.

Fixed that for you, and yes you can start it at 47 if you plan on putting level 50 IOs in it. IOs work the same as SOs, with the exception of purple sets, those you HAVE to be level 50 to slot.

Yes to all. It doesn't matter if you are higher level than the IOs are, they will work exactly the same forever. The only time they'll stop working is if you exemp BELOW the level of the IO for a task Force or something.

Do you like the character NOW? If you do, you will still like him after you slot this build. It's not a great build by any means (which isn't an insult, it takes a while to get good at building characters, and this is better than most first attempts I've seen), but it IS an improvement over SOs. It doesn't look like you actually gimped anything, so the set bonuses you are getting should be an improvement.

The only thing you should REALLY do is slot Parry like an attack. If you're planning on using it to keep your melee defense up, it's going to hurt your damage output. Not slotting it to actually DEAL damage will only hurt it more, and it needs to hit to do anything at all.

If I get a chance when I get home from work, I'll throw you a sample build to give you an idea of the basic needs of a BS/Shield character. So, again, it's not a great build, but it isn't horrible either, it should function just fine for you, but it can definitely be improved on.

Some tips I didn't have time to post in my first post (I'm posting from work on my break):

Your primary goal with any Shield Defense build is to reach the softcap on defense. If you're not sure what the softcap is, it is 45%. Most NPCs you will be fighting have a base 50% chance to hit you, and the lowest the game will allow that chance to go is 5%. So, if you get your defenses to 45%, their chance to hit you will be as low as it will ever get.

There are 2 schools of thought on doing that with a Broadsword/Shield character.

1) Softcap using set bonuses, Weave, Maneuevers, Combat Jumping, etc. and drop Parry from your build altogether.

2) Use Parry to help you softcap to melee attacks, and focus your slotting on Ranged and AoE. The theory here being that if you aren't IN melee range of anything, you don't need melee defense, and if you ARE in melee range, it is pretty easy to just open your attack chain with Parry and get your defense at the same time. Ideally, you still want your melee defense to be at or slightly above 30%, so you only need to use Parry once to softcap.

I'm a fan of option 2. If you go with option 1, you are pretty much committed to spending most or all of your slotting chasing defense bonuses. Option 2 loosens that up a bit so you can get other things that will come in handy, like recharge bonuses and Max HP bonuses.

Now, some of the sets *I* use to do that aren't very popular, but I've found they work for me. I like 6 slotting Eradication in my PBAoE attacks, such as Slice, Whirling Sword, and Head Splitter. You won't be doing as much damage as you could be with those attacks, but Against All Odds will make up for that. I like Eradication because it has one of the best colections of set bonuses available for PBAoEs. It gives: 1.8% Max Endurance, 1.56% ranged defense (the closer you get to the softcap, the more little bonuses like this matter), 2.25% max HP (since you have a power that increases max HP, getting more of it is a good idea), and the 6 slot bonus is 3.13% AoE defense.

The Red Fortune sets in your defense toggles are actually exactly what I would use.

I'd also 6 slot several of my single target attacks with Mako's Bite for the ranged defense it offers.

I would slot Shield Charge with 6 Obliteration. You will be getting plenty of bonuses from 3 sets of Eradication, but don't forget you want your melee defense to be at least 30% as well, and Obliteration gives you 3.75% melee defense for 6 slots, and it gives you some recharge as well.

I'd slot True Grit with 3 Numina's Convalescence, which will give you 12% regeneration and 1.88% more max HP. I wouldn't worry too much about slotting it for resistance, you already have the Steadfast Protection Res/Def in there, put a Steadfast Res/End in it and call it good. You want Numina's Heal, Heal/End, and Heal/Rech.

You put the Miracle unique in Physical Perfection, which is a good idea. I'd pull the Energy Manipulations out, and put Performance Shifter End Mod and the +End in their place. In the third slot, put the Numina's Convalescence unique.

Put Luck of the Gambler sets in Weave and Maneuvers. I'd use Defense, Def/End, and the +7.5% recharge (which also boosts your defense a bit) The 7.5% Recharge ones will be expensive, but you can get them for 2 Hero Merits (assuming you have Going Rogue), so they aren't hard to get that way. I'd put at least 3 in each power, but if you can fit 4 in, you should.

Pull the 3 piece Perfomance Shifter out of Stamina and replace it with the Chance for +End proc.

Drop Assault and Focused Accuracy. Pick up Tactics and open Body Mastery with Conserve Power instead. Take the Gaussian's set you have slotted in Focused Accuracy and put it in Tactics instead. Focused Accuracy is an end hog and it isn't that great, Tactics costs less end and benefits your whole team instead of just you.

Take Build Up sooner. (You can also put the Gaussian's set in Build Up if you want, I do it frequently if I'm running out of power choices) If you ever exemp this character down, you're going to want the ability to hit stuff harder.

Now, these are just what *I* would do with a Broadsword/Shield character. In fact I'm leveling one right now and plan to do exactly what I've advised here. I'm sure there will be differences of opinion, but most people will probably agree that I'm giving solid advice here. (the biggest difference of opinion is probably going to involve my advice to use Eradication)

Now, my suggestions here will be quite a bit more expensive than the build you posted, but you can work toward it gradually, and not feel like you have to buy it all right now.

Hope this gives you a better idea of what you need to shoot for with your character. BS/Shield is a fun combination that doesn't give up any top end performance in return for smooth leveling like some combos.

I'm a big fan of Eradication. I have three full sets in my Katana/Dark, which I consider my most optimized build. There are down sides to Eradications (lower damage, horrible endurance), but they give SO much in return. I also like Obliteration. It just depends on what you're after.

It will be expensive if you buy all of it at the consignment house. But you have other options.

What I would do: Run lots of tip missions to get Hero Merits (provided you have Going Rogue). Use the Hero Merits to get the extremely pricey items, like LotG +Recharges and the Numina's and Miracle uniques.

You also might get a purple drop too, which will potentially double your funds.

Play the character a lot over double xp weekend. After you hit level 50 you will get double the influence for each kill.

You can learn to play the market, but if you're anything like me you won't like it much. I prefer playing City of Heroes to playing City of Stockbrokers.

Above all else, don't think you have to get everything in the build RITE NAO!! Take your time with it and play the character, adding a set or two here and there as you can afford them. That way you still get to enjoy playing the character, and you can gradually watch him become more awesome as you add stuff.

and how can i tell what is a purple or not. like, what makes it different?

Correct. But a LotG costs 2 Hero Merits, where it would cost you 240 reward merits to buy it direct, and probably 150-200 million to buy with influence (and that's just ONE)

Quote:

You know how IO recipes have different colors to them? Like, Common IOs are white, uncommons are yellow (like Crushing Impact) rares are orange (like your Miracle). Well, they're called purples because they ARE purple. When one drops you have the words "Recipe Found" flash across your screen, and it will be in purple letters. And instead of being white, yellow, or orange, the name of the recipe will be in purple.

They are super rare recipes that you have to be level 50 to slot. But, anything that can drop a level 50 common IO recipe (which only exist at levels divisible by 5) can drop a purple. So, any enemy that is level 47 or higher can possibly drop a purple.

Nobody seems to have answered this first part:

All of the consignment houses on the 11 US servers are connected*, and as of recently it's the same market whether you're heroside or villiainside. Both of these are good news because there's more items for sale, which keeps prices down.

If the former hero vs. villain markets are any indication, if the consignment houses weren't shared across servers there would be a lot fewer items for sale and very high prices for them on smaller servers, but luckily that's not the case!

*All of the EU servers' consignment houses are also connected to each other, but they ARE NOT connected to the US servers.

As far as raising money goes, the Market Forum has a veritable wealth of information available, depending on how much you care to read and learn. There are basic strategies like "take five minutes each time you sell recipes and learn which ones are worth A LOT MORE if you craft them" and "don't sell your rare orange salvage to vendors." Vendors will pay you 10,000 INF, other players will pay you up to 3 to 4 million INF for some of those this week. Or, you can learn to play the above-mentioned City of Stockbrokers on the side and rake in a billion INF or more in a week's time.

This thread is exactly what I was looking for!

I liked Necronomnom's build , but tweaked it a little bit to suit my wants, what I am wondering is if I messed it up too much? I am a very novice builder and not sure if I might have killed one thing to get something else. (lose end recov for aoe def for example)

I was hoping someone could look at this and tell me if it would work as a level 50 end build (not a leveling up one)

Thanks a lot

<edit>couple minor things. The build does have too many +3% damage boost, but I think it is just 1 extra, and need the sets for the defence more than the lost 3%, Also it seems it is slightly better to put the 6 slots of performance shifter into Stamina for the bonus instead of Phyiscal Perfection.

I am trying to hit the soft cap on melee/ranged/aoe and also do a LOT of damage. Plans where for the Musculature Core just for the big damage kick from it too.

Hey all, thought I'd jump in and ask for some input as well. I think that my attack chains would be these...

Single: Hack>Disembowel>Hack>Head Splitter
AoE: Slice>Whirling Sword>Slice>Head Splitter
Am I correct? Anyways, in regards to One with the Shield, I think I could use Conserve Power to mitigate the 60% Endurance crash. That should allow me to fully recover while still in combat (as in doing my attack chains), yeah?

The theory here being that if you aren't IN melee range of anything, you don't need melee defense, and if you ARE in melee range, it is pretty easy to just open your attack chain with Parry and get your defense at the same time. Ideally, you still want your melee defense to be at or slightly above 30%, so you only need to use Parry once to softcap.
But what about the 3rd school?

3) Keep both the Softcap and Parry. Use Parry when there are enemies that have an Accuracy or ToHit bonus.

I'm more in favour of going 45/45/45 at 50, and making it so you don't need Parry to softcap. THAT BEING SAID, Parry is vital to get to 50 as it lets you softcap your defense with two hits in the early levels.

Whether you rely on Parry to softcap or not, however, is your choice in the end.
