I accidentally hit some random key combination on my keyboard and it totally closed my UI as if I were going to take a screenshot without the UI in the way

I have no idea what key this was or how to undo it.

Help!

Yeah I've done that a few times. I'm pretty sure just restarting the game will fix the problem.

Enjoy your day please.

I can type but the command doesn't seem to work.

I guess I'll just play without a UI

Can you get the menu? Try hitting the backslash key \, Select Options, scroll down to the Windows section of the General tab and click where it says Reset Windows (right hand column).

note: in regards to hitting the \ -- do not do it at the chat input line, just hit it

Neither of these is going to do anything to fix the main problem if the UI is actually turned off. There would be no visible chat window and no visible menu no matter what keys you press.

I think a long time ago, the default key for toggling the UI was the period (.), so if it's an older character that you haven't changed, it might turn it back on for you. You can also try checking your keybinds.txt file to see which key has "disable2d" on it.

If that doesn't help, then you'll just have to try enabling it by pretending the UI is still there by pressing keys in a specific and correct order. You said you were still able to type and try the command above, so try the following instead:
Press enter
(Your "focus" should now be on your chat, even if you can't see it, so don't click anywhere or press anything else)
Type /disable2d 0 ( or just /-disable2d )
Press enter
With any luck, your UI should be restored, or at least finally visible again. Then you can make any appropriate changes.

If that fails, the only other solution I can think of would be to simply restart your client. As far as I'm aware, the game will always load with the UI turned on anyway. (Edit: I just verified by turning my UI off and closing the game that the UI is back normally again after logging back in.) Since this issue is a few hours old, I hope you have already done that by now anyway. lol

In your CoH directory, there should be a file called keybinds.txt. Open it with Notepad.

If this isn't in that file place it in there as a separate line:

. "++disable2D"

That is a period, a space, quote, plus, plus, disable2D, quote

Save the file (if it didn't exist in the first place, open Notepad, type in that line and save as keybinds.txt).

Now go into the game. The period key should toggle the UI on and off.

You skipped a step. You'd have to perform a /bindload before the key starts working that way. Our keybinds are saved serverside to each character separately. The client doesn't read the local file unless we tell it to (or unless a new character is created).

That said, without the UI already being on, it'd be just as difficult to run the /bindload as it would be to run the /-disable2d directly.

IIRC, creating a new character will load keybinds.txt onto that character automatically.

Indeed it does, as well as the window, options and even chat files.
