How do I block websites?

I use internet explorer. My Mother-in-law was allowed to use my computer while hers was being repaired, but has since gotten it back. Unfortunately, she still uses mine becasue it is much faster. I've asked her again and again to stop, she gets it full of spyware and other crap.

So now I'm looking for a way to block the places she goes, in the hopes that she'll get frustrated with my computer "not working" and go back to her own. I know it's easy to do with apps if you use firefox, but i'm not a big fan of Firefox, want to stick to IE. Is there some way to do it?

what operating system are you using?

I have used the hosts file to block websites in the past.

You could also just... require a password log in to your computer...

what does he do when she asks for the password?

Maybe you'll have to resort to installing one of those NetNanny-type programs to monitor/block internet usage.

If this weren't the only issue i have with her, I probably would. But we get along great otherwise. It's just one of those things

you can find your host file here

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

open the host file in notepad and for each website you want to block you can just add anther line like the one below

Code:
127.0.0.1    www.google.com
just replace the google address with the address of the website you want to block.

127.0.0.1 is an address that will route back to the computer you are using. So each time you would try to go to google.com it would look on your computer for the google website.

You can also, if I recall correctly, use the same trick to redirect traffic to a different website altogether. Have all of her favorite sites get pointed to.. say, these forums.

Then when she asks, just say you've "reconfigured your computer for gaming." It's the truth, and accomplishes what you wanted :P

If you have a list of specific sites, just edit your hosts file. If it's a more general type of blocking w/o a specific list, then you'll need some software.

or point it to a website you've designed, stating in large letters "The website you were trying to access is potentially harmful to this PC, Mum! Please stop trying to view pr0n on my PC - regards, Son"

Alternatively just use the options in IE

Tools-->Internet Options-->Security

Select Restricted Sites and add all the problem ones - Wildcards are enabled as well

Mind of Gaia lvl 50 Defiant's first Mind/Storm 'troller.
Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant

Or be a good kid and upgrade your mom's computer.

Loose --> not tight.
Lose --> Did not win, misplace, cannot find, subtract.
One extra 'o' makes a big difference.

It's his Mother-in-law. Not the same by any stretch.

I'd use the built in IE option, or the hosts file.
