At least in this case the patient was just cold, not dead and buried and forgotten.

Maybe I don’t understand the term “thread necromancy” being ESL, and well, not that consumed with netiquette if that’s even a term.

This thread started on 01-18-2011, 12:53 PM by ClawsandEffect, referred to on http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...08#post3452408 which itself was posted on “Yesterday, 12:55 PM” i.e. 01-27-2011, 12:55PM.

i.e. a 9 day old thread referred to on a 99 page thread that was current as of yesterday.

Am I missing the definition? This is hardly an old thread, brought back to the top by a single post to bring it back to the top. Old topic? Perhaps. But then people have been complaining about the rain for 1,000s of years, and that’s never going to stop, so it certainly won’t stop here about these topics.

I don’t want to break any rules such as =

“5. Non-Constructive posts are prohibited.

Thread necromancy - Necro-posting is responding to an old discussion thread and is a form of thread ‘bumping’. If you wish to discuss a considerably older topic, create a new post and link to the older discussion.”

but this is (likely) an old topic, posted with new post, and there’s a link in a current thread as well, so I’m confused. Any explanations would be helpful, thank you.

Don't worry about it.

I doubt any mod would consider one week to be thread necromancy.

The thread is still relevant, and I personally asked Claws to reference it in the Strike Pack thread. Please avoid derailing it with unnecessary moderation.

That thing is: Why are so many people obsessed with being rewarded for the time they spend playing City of Heroes?

I see complaints about the drop rate of Incarnate Shards, purples, and any other thing that you get while you're playing, and I can't for the life of me figure out why it is so important that people get these things.

Try something real quick: Think back to when you first started playing the game, and why. I can guarantee that, whatever your reason for playing the game was, it did not involve purple drops or Incarnate Shards. In fact, I would go so far as to say you started playing the game because it was fun.

Now, when I read the forums, it seems that for a lot of people, the amount of fun they have is directly connected to the amount of rewards they get while playing.

Look at anything else you do for enjoyment. Lets say you enjoy bowling, for example. When you go out bowling with your friends, you're going out for the express purpose of going bowling. Having fun while bowling is it's own reward. You don't get upset that you didn't get a trophy for it, you had fun bowling and that was the point of doing it.

Why are video games, and MMOs in particular, so different? You would think that it would be the same. If you go bowling to have fun, why wouldn't you play video games for the same reason?

But I see a lot of people saying that they are playing to get the rewards associated with it, and complaining when they feel that they aren't getting them fast enough. That would be the same thing as going bowling and getting upset that you didn't get a trophy at the end of the night.

What happened to the fun? Why do people feel the need to be rewarded for entertaining themselves? You don't expect a reward from watching TV or a movie. You don't expect a reward for playing catch with your son (or dad, as the case may be). You don't epect a reward for going bowling, or hanging out with your friends. In all of those activities you do to entertain yourself, the fun you have while doing it IS the reward.

Why is a video game so different?
Some answers

  1. Devs added rewards so that is now the focus. Blame them.
  2. ALL games have a reward from monopoly to world of warcraft, even if it's just winning.
  3. Watching Tv/Movies has zero competition to it, so there is no "winning", unlike any game, even solitaire.
  4. You do expect a reward for bowling, you expect to win or do better then you did before. Bowling is a competition oriented pastime, unlike playing catch with your son, or reading a good book.

On a slightly more serious note... Rewards in the game give people something to look forward to and to strive after. It keeps people subscribed because otherwise far, far more people would have left out of boredom and canceled their accounts instead of paying 15 bucks a month to not play a game because they might enjoy it again for a few hours sometime in the future. If the game were free to play, that might be another story. With a monthly fee the game itself becomes a revenue generator and must be maintained, that means ways to engage people's interests and keep them paying for playing. Adding a shiny to chase after is an easy way to do this.
