Compare and Contrast:

Ms Terry (Tri-Form Warshade), extra slots allocation:

  • Human Form: +39 slots
  • Nova Form: +12 slots
  • Dwarf Form: +16 slots
Autumn Turning (Quad-Form Peacebringer), extra slots allocation:
  • Human and Light Forms: +36 slots
  • Nova Form: +14 slots

Just looking at the slotting allocations, you'd think that my Peacebringer is "feeling the crunch" of limited slotting options more, since there are more slots spent in both Dwarf and Nova Forms than in Human Form powers on my Peacebringer. And yet, ironically, it's actually Ms Terry, my Warshade, who suffers from "slot crunch" more ... even though she has 3 more slots to spend on Human Form powers.

In case anyone's wondering where this WALL OF TEXT CRITS YOU came from ... I was on a Dr Quarterfield TF with none other than Dechs Kaison last night on Virtue. He was playing his Bots/Traps Mastermind. I was playing Ms Terry, my Warshade.

And you just can't play a Warshade, teamed up with Dechs Kaison, without talking about being a something something Warshade at some point.

Anyway ... I promised him I'd post Ms Terry's build, since he seemed "minorly impressed" by her performance on the TF, and so here it is ... along with Autumn Turning, my Peacebringer who has a common core set of powers derived from all the work I did on Ms Terry. I figure I can't be the only one who builds a WS/PB duo of characters where I "crib notes" from stuff I do on one for re-use in the other.

The things I'm really most proud about with these two builds is how few Purple IOs they call for (only 1 for my Warshade, and it's a Pet Set Purple, with Recharge in it) ... and how well they Exemplar/Malefactor. Anyone loading these builds up in Mids' will quickly notice that there are some "breakpoints" for IO slotting below 50 ... at Levels 27 and 31. This is because Level 27 IOs still offer their Global Set Bonuses when Exemplar/Malefactor down to Level 24, which just so happens to be the upper bound for a whole slew of Flashback Arcs. The Level 31 IOs still offer their Global Set Bonuses when Exemplar/Malefactor down to Level 28, which just so happens to be the Moonfire TF Level. Everything that isn't slotted for Set Bonuses is either used at Level 50, or in the case of Procs, is used at the minimum Level the Set becomes available.

And just for the record Dechs, Ms Terry wasn't even fully slotted out with the above build plan while on last night's Dr Quarterfield TF. Some of her slots were empty, due to still being in the process of rebuilding after respeccing to the latest build plan you see here, and she was still throughputting for the team as well as you saw.

Also, as an aside to other Warshade players ... I have found, repeatedly, on TFs that the full Medicine Pool (Aid Other, Stimulant, Aid Self and Resuscitate) are not only useful Powers, but ones which I am using frequently. Teleport Friend (in this case, Shadow Recall) and Resuscitate makes for a good combination, even on Not An Empath characters. Aid Other gets a good workout in TF/SF teams, and I've used Aid Other on more than one occasion to save a teammate from faceplanting when taking damage from an AV. Did it again last night on a STF where the main Brute was eating Lord Recluse's attention. Aid Other is also useful in keeping your Fluffies from going into the next battle wounded, helping them last longer and dish out more damage. Stimulant is also almost invaluable at keeping Squishies and other No Mez Protection teammates viable and fighting. I like using it pre-emptively on Defenders and Controllers, when they hold still long enough for me to use it on them. Stimulant and Aid Other are also very good for use on teammates who have just used a Wakie, since it saves them a good amount of time before they can rejoin the fight. And of course, Aid Self is also very useful in between battles where you haven't got any Defeated Foes lying around to Stygian Circle and refuel yourself with.

To be honest, I'm actually surprised by just how much (and how useful!) the full suite of the Medicine Pool is to Warshade ... so much so that I'm honestly having a hard time figuring out why it took me this long to pick it up in its entirety for Ms Terry.

Hmmmmmm.

The goal normally is perma hasten and perma eclipse. This gets rid of the need for the Human for shields since a double mire and eclipse getting about 7 will cap both Nova form for damage and resistance. As long as you can stay mez free, which is easy since your hovering above the melee fray at the resistance cap and highly self buffed damage.

You skipped some easy sets like Basilisk gaze in Gravity well and Stupify in Gravitic Emanation.

Did you really slot an easily perma mag 3 AOE MEZ power with a knockback set that doesn't even provide recharge? Change that now as you are currently sending perps flying far and wide. Its a mag 9 knock back at base, knock back is good enough. The proc from FF is ok I guess if you use enough.

Why no Performance shifter procs? At least put one in stamina. It procs in the forms also. You could drop one in the forms also for even more!

I really don't like the medicine pool. At 30 people have enough inspirations to rez themselves and everything you fight should be mostly mezzed or your at the resistance cap, or both

Heal self is ok but really WS sacrifice themselves on the alter of recharge. Perma eclipse will help a lot more than heal self. If your hurting that bad during combat drop to dwarf and work a chain together that includes Black dwarf drain.

WS's are not PB's and vice versa. Drop the human shields if your a triform WS. They are marginal on even Human form WS's. Pick up pool powers than can mule LOTG's.

People can get away with putting less than 6 slots in eclipse are also people that can afford purples to give them the recharge to do that.

I would gut the human form attacks (and you only have to take 1). Don't slot it.

I would try to fit in SS. Maybe where the snare is localted

And

Don't slot KB into Gravitic Emanation. (Yes I repeated it)

_____________________________________

Now onto strategy have your form macros and TP macros set up. You can get fancy with these to do all sorts of whiz bang but that's all you need.

If you have a tank don't worry about Using gravitic Emanation unless your fighting Devouring earth. Those mess up a lot of people because they are cheaty face. Also sappers. Mess those SOB's up stat. Cause they will sap you right out of dwarf form and you won't even be able to use sprint to get out of there.

So either follow the tank or stealth into the biggest concentration of mobs you can find. Hit eclipse.

Then hit Sunless Mire. You now have a choice. If your team is chewing threw everything you can go nova a rain galactic death. Or you can go dwarf and hit the dwarf mire. (congratz you should be damage capped if you did that correctly and have a scrapper or 2 near you) Stay dwarf if your mezzed if not then go nova and rain galactic death. If it's a fast team just float on to the next group and rain damage capped galactic death.

Your dwarf form coupled with eclipse is very useful for things like hydra and psychic damage since eclipse can cap psychic and toxic damage for you.

There's not really such a thing as a "quad form" Peacebringer. Light Form does not come with its own set of distinct powers, and is therefore just part of Human form.

Actually, it's a commonly used phrase to make the distinction that says two things: "I will use Light Form, and human form attacks will be slotted well enough to get use out of it."

This also assumes that you never exemplar below level 33. I do. A lot.

You don't do all that many LGTFs do you?

Because I wanted a power which does Damage+Hold+Hold Proc ... a combination which is simply not available when 4 slotting Basilisk Gaze.

Because I don't need a 6th +6.25% Global Recharge Bonus.

Yes ... because with Hasten and all the global recharge in the rest of the build the Mag 3 Stun on Gravitic Emanation is just barely short of being perma. With a Spiritual Core Alpha slot operational at 45+, it is perma ... even without the extra stun duration from IO slotting. And now I'm thinking of swapping out the 6-slot Force Feedback set for a 6-slot Kinetic Crash set instead. Being able to KB groups of hostiles which are KB Protected (see Cimeroran Traitors) can be useful for both diversionary and herding purposes.

And there's also the fact that I can appreciate use of the 3rd Dimension for controlling KB distance by using the Hop Shot Cone Attack tactic, which turns any Cone attack into a Poor Man's PBAoE so long as you can jump up.

And steal the slots from where? The only "optional" slots I've got lying around to do that sort of thing is the Devastation Procs in Ebon Eye and Gravimetric Snare ... which incidentally are used to "supercharge" the Hold potential of Gravity Well so as to limit my exposure to extremely tough opponents, as well as neutralizing Mez attackers.

Nice theory. My direct personal experiences on LGTF, STF, Dr Q (a 4 hour tour, a 4 hour tour...), ITF, and other TFs tell me that all four powers in Medicine are useful to a Warshade. Better yet, they're all One Slot Wonders for my purposes.

Actually, I've found Aid Self to be invaluable against enemy groups which do not leave a whole lot of corpses lying around. Rularuu comes to mind.

With the shields, I only need 3 Foes to cap my (non-Toxic, non-Psi) Resists at 85%. I have no problems finding (at least) 3 Foes per group when soloing. Without the shields, I'd need to have at least 5 Foes to cap my Resists (all) at 85%, and would have no Resistance of any kind outside of Dwarf Form at Levels 1-32. Unlike you (apparently), I exemplar down into Levels 1-32 ... therefore I very much prefer to have something to fall back on when Eclipse is not available. The shields cost me 3 power picks and 3 extra slots, and allow me to use Orbiting Death, supercharged by Sunless Mire, a great deal more safely on TFs of Level 15-30.

Given everything else you've said so far ... I was hoping you weren't going to appeal to the Elitist Clause in making your arguments.

No thank you. I make use of my Human Form as an independent Form capable of attacking in ways and with means not available in Nova or Dwarf Form.

I'm then standing right alongside the Tank running Orbiting Death and Inky Aspect with my three shields up, suppressing enemy Bosses and LTs to make the Tank's life easier, while letting Orbiting Death shred everything in the vicinity and get finishing taps on slivers of life left over on anything in the PBAoE ... saving my entire team both Time and Endurance. This allows not only my Team Tank, but also the rest of the team, to play a good deal more aggressively.

Meanwhile I've got a single target RANGED attack chain of Gravimetric Snare, Ebon Eye, Repeat ... endlessly ... without pause. I can use the Immobilize in Gravimetric Snare to keep hostiles where I want them (often within Inky Aspect radius) and stop them from running. As I said ... I use my Human Form very aggressively on teams, when it's going to be the most efficient "multiplier" for the powers of my teammates given the environmental conditions and the Enemy Groups we're up against.

Clearly you haven't seen me doing precisely this on a Dr Q TF when teamed with none other than Dechs (MF Warshade indeed...) Kaison.

I also realized (after posting) that explaining through text might not be the easiest way to "see" the Common Core Powers in these two builds. So here's a pair of Data Chunks so you can just load things up into Mids' (if you prefer) for a better graphical compare and contrast.

I do TF's all the time. All the ones you mentioned. Yes I do LGTF's and act accordingly when I get mezzed. Yes theres some dwarf scrapping there. I exemplar below 33 and act like I did at that level. below 10 nova is slightly OP like blasters are and above that you can lean on dwarf or human form mezzing depending on the level.

If you prefer fighting mostly in human form why not pick up the Human AOE's and/or Quasar. If your doing things like double mire your shields are going to dropping all the time. Just stay human mire then nuke away. If you get mezzed breakfree or scrap it out in dwarf until the mez wears off. And at ED capped slotting, on Eclipse, your still getting 50's resistance to all, without the shields. That's not shabby against 3 enemies. YMMV I guess.

You feel that WS's can to be a resser/healer in the team. I can respect that as something you enjoy. kudos! I would just make them a wakie if they died so often they ran out of inspirations at 40+ which is the level of those TF's you mentioned. Alternatively you could kill whats killing them faster but we disagree on what's most helpful here and neither of us is wrong.

I maintain that the knock back sets are a bad idea in Gravtic Emanation. Their mezzed and they are already going flying. If your staying Human and spamming it take dark Detonation and Unchain Essense and do some AOE damage at the same time. If your mezzing everything then you wouldn't have to worry about being mezed yourself. And with the knock back set you will be spamming it to make it perma and to get the recharge to feed Eclipse. Stick Absolute Amazement in there if you can't move some sets around.

Or at least kinetic crash for the 7.5 recharge. Your not super contributing by staying in human and spamming a G. Ema. gravitic snare ebon eye chain and occasionally summoning a pet . Not to mention form flipping will drop the toggle on the shields anyway. Stupify or Absolute Amazement is where it at however.

Are you staying human form mezzing the whole time? To feed the FF proc?

You may enjoy a mostly human form play style though. That lets you mez to your hearts content and hurt things. You wouldn't have to change forms to use medicine and could always go dwarf so your not completely be break free dependent. You could also run things like leadership toggles reliably. Just Mez> Eclipse> human form mire> Kill a minion> Unchain essence> Dark Detonation. That's pretty hefty AOE damage slotted and with a mire. Quasar is very viable for a WS also with minor inspiration usage.

The triform playstyle is about the wacky double mire 3 pets following playstyle.

I'm not elitist. I have 1 purple set that was given to me. Solo I'm slower and using human controls more and tanking for the pets. I can farm the wall easy enough. On a team my biggest contribution is melting the opposition from inherent buffs only. Team given buffs are gravy. Not to mentioned I'm resistance capped and can rez myself. You can also get Perma eclipse from a non purpled build. Recharge lets me do that and it is useful while in human form (and Nova).

I do like that you don't mule anything, but maneuvers, cj, stealth, invisibility are also great 1 slot wonders for recharge. This is a difference of opinion between us however.

Here's a non purple perma hasten perma eclipse build. If you drop the last 4 powers and the LOTG's you can grab 1 slotted medicine and remain perma eclipse (but not perma hasten). Remember eclipse will boost recovery also making the Performance shifter procs better against one of the WS's true dangerous enemies, the unseen sapper.

I've been avoiding discussions about Redlynne's build, mostly because I don't have anything to say that wouldn't already be in my guide. Judging solely by performance, Ms Terry's build is fine. She sure showed the Rularuu what for. Maybe there's room for improvement, but if Redlynne is enjoying the character and it does what she wants it to do, that's optimal already. I've said it before, there's a million ways to build a warshade, the only good one is the one that works for you.

I want to go back a few posts to offer a counter point to something Late2Party said, though.

Actually, one of my suggestions for a cheap build only puts four or five slots in Eclipse. I think the cheaper your build is, the less powers you end up six slotting.

In fact, since the required number of targets is less, you can even drop one of the accuracy enhancements and put the slot somewhere else. Another option would be three RES/RCHG and one ACC/RCHG from Efficacy Adapter for a twinge of accuracy but still capping recharge and most of resistance in only four total slots.

Which is pretty much what I've done. I get:
  • 2.25x level 50 IO on Resistance from 3 slots (Common, Titanium, Aegis)
  • 2.25x level 50 IO on Recharge (Titanium, Aegis, Efficacy, Performance)
  • 1x level 50 IO on Accuracy (Efficacy, Performance)
  • 1x level 50 IO on Endurance Mod (Efficacy, Performance)
By my counting, that's 6.5 "slots worth" out of 5 slots, with nothing "wasted" (unless you think the End Mod is "wasted" effort). Ironically, because this frankenslotting is so close to the ED cap, there's really a minimal return on investment to be gained by switching out the EndMod/Accuracy/Recharge for straight up Accuracy/Recharge set IOs ... especially when factoring in Spiritual Alpha slotting, which punches the Recharge up to the ED cap (and beyond) anyway. On this point at least, I figure my frankenslotting is slightly better than 4x Resistance/Recharge plus 1 Accuracy IO ... since I get 1 End Mod IO on top of that out of my combo "for free" (so to speak).

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...

I relish in the ridiculousness of stacked eclipse. The lack of recharge resistance worries me mostly with that 1 power though. Maybe the addiction is causing me to show some bias

Slight update to the Peacebringer build, based on the realization that Glinting Eye really isn't good for use as a single target ranged attack all by itself. Ebon Eye goes hand-in-glove with Gravimetric Snare for Warshades, because the two powers have the same animation (1.67s) and base recharge (4s) times, and with enough +Recharge can effectively and continuously alternate with enhanced recharge times being almost exactly equal to the animation times ... meaning they each recharge in almost exactly the space of time it takes the other animation in the pairing to actually animate.

And while that "works" just fine on a Warshade, there really just isn't a Peacebringer counterpart to Gravimetric Snare (or at least, there isn't one that suits my purposes).

So I swapped out Glinting Eye for Gleaming Bolt ... which with all the +Recharge in the build is down around 0.5 seconds to recharge. That means that Gleaming Bolt is a better "fit" in the build and in combat because it can be rapid fired endlessly as an attack chain filler.

I also pulled the +Stealth IO from White Dwarf Step. On most of my characters, I try and make sure I've installed the +Stealth IO somewhere on the build. In this case though, I've been able to determine that such an expenditure would be (actually) wasteful since there aren't any other +Stealth powers to synergize with it so as to truly "hide" from mobs.

Thanks heaps, Redlynne, for showing that this AT actually has a means of not sucking at all levels without pulling stunts.

Uh ... thanks. I think ...

Um ... what part of Ms Terry's build above "convinced" you of ... this? The fact that it's built as an Exemplar Friendly build which isn't totally loaded out with Level 50 Everything? Is it that it only uses a single (Pet Set) Purple IO? Is it that it's a Tri-Form Warshade that delivers "decent" performance in all three forms, and is slotted out to provide meaningful differentiation in ability between the forms?

Bear in mind that even the build I've posted is a slow maturing build. Some things, such as the HOs, can't be slotted until Level 47. The Nova Powers don't get finished slotted up until Level 29. The Warshade Powers are still drawing slots until Level 42. And the Human Powers don't get all their slots until Level 50. So the build is going to be nowhere *near* its full potential on the way up as you level. Oh sure, you'll feel the power "building up" in it as you work your way on up, but it's nowhere near the same as what you'll have when you Exemplar down from 50 with everything fully slotted.

Things *do* get a lot easier at Levels 18 (Gravity Well+Starless Step) and at Level 22 (Stygian Circle and Level 25 SO/IO Enhancements) though, so try and get there before rendering judgement.

Pretty much the combination of the first and the latter point - the fact it's a proper tri-form build that will work both at 50 and at the same time can examplar pretty far down without becoming a flying furball standing as far back as possible as to not draw too much attention while spamming its only half-decently slotted attack left.

My first impression on your PB is ouch... yeah, like ouch...

I understand the desire for LotG+Global Rech, but seriously? You'll willingly waste 4 power picks just to nab two on Leaderships that have next to no use even if you turned them on?

I know slotting can be a pain, and some of the proc picks could be fun (I'm even debating doing something like that on an alt build) but I'll have to argue your picks on how you are doing this looks painfuly unplayable to me. I don't recall LF capping damage resistances without some slotting, your Dwarf appears squishy to me - and is Reform Essesne just for looks?

You noted you droped Glinting Eye for Gleaming Bolt to get ranged damage up a bit; but I would argue 3 ranges ST attacks 3-slotted in my PB brings far more damage than your single option.

Set Bonuses are nice; but I would argue not to slot levels for them in most cases. Your attacks are suffering greatly to get those bonuses that don't pay you back as much as the power itself.

And yet ... I have no problem playing the build, and get compliments on it in TFs.

More like I have 4 powers "left over" to play with and no slots available to spend on them. Powers like Photon Seekers and Quasar are great if you can slot them ... but you have to slot them (preferably 6-slot). When there are no slots left, your options for "useful" powers dwindles rather dramatically.

And I differ on the notion that Leadership Powers "have next to no use even if you turned them on" ... because I prefer to think of my TEAM and not just myself. The teams I'm on will pretty much ALWAYS benefit from my Leadership powers, even if I myself am not deriving quite as much benefit. One example would be that I can either single target blast away in human form or nova form ... and *I* do more damage in nova form ... but in human form, with Assault running, my *TEAM* throughputs more damage than I personally could make up for by being in nova form.

Which is ironic, because the latest PB build I posted is performing above and beyond my expectations in actual gameplay. Light Form caps damage resistances *with* the three shields active. Dwarf is definitely not squishy in any team with Scrappers and Stalkers and Blasters and Corruptors in it, boosting my resistances. And Reform Essence is NOT just for looks ... it's for boosting Max HP up high enough to yield a dramatically increased HP/sec regen across all forms.

3 slotted attacks? Can't get to too many "useful" set bonuses (such as Global Recharge) that way ...

And while you might see bigger damage numbers per attack with your PB and slotting, I'm not so sure you'd be seeing more damage per second being throughput onto a single target as what my PB can do with Gleaming Bolt alone (especially with Assault and Global Damage enhancement).

My attacks are suffering greatly ... because they have more than 3 slots in them?
My attacks are suffering greatly ... because they are already being impacted by ED reductions in return on investment using the levels that I'm slotting them with?

I fail to understand your use of the non-sequitron in this instance.

I wrote up a long reply, re-read it for errors and deleted it when I re-read this and reminded myself why I stopped arguing with Forum people.

The best compliment I ever have is not spoken. No "oh wow" crap, but the nod of a silent head that yes, I am doing my job.

The game's not about min/max, its not about having an OMGWHTWASTHAT every damn turn, it was about having fun last time I knew.

If I can keep up more damage per second by using more attack powers than ubermaxfrankenslottingforOMWwhatsthatbullshit to re-use only a few then I'll just keep up with what I do.

I'll leave it at that maybe.

Minor update (on the off chance anyone cares) ...

Yesterday I was running a bunch of my characters through the Valentine's Day arc and was ultimately surprised that I was able to solo Snaptooth (and the hordes) twice on my PB without being defeated even once. Now, admittedly, it took a while (to whittle away the horde), and I'm missing some 10+ enhancements out of my PB build ... but still ... it was nice to get that kind of "validation" of the build I'm using, even if it was on "easy" content such as soloing Snaptooth for Valentine's Day.

Thank you very much for sharing your PB build and this recent solo encounter. It gives me some great options to consider when respecing my PB who tried to maximize defense and recharge bonus sets but underperformed to my expectations. I wanted to have a Tri-form PB that could solo more often as well as be able to provide some backup support to team members. Your updated build with Gleaming Bolt gives me a great template to work with.

In retrospect, it wasn't THAT awesome to be able to solo Snaptooth with a Quad-form PB. I say this only because I was able, with the aid of a single other player, to duo Snaptooth with a Level 2(!) Loyalist I'd just rolled up. The difference is, when duo-ing Snaptooth, we'd just run to the exit and zone a couple of times to force the ambushes to drop aggro and then we could concentrate on Snaptooth himself in peace. The difference, of course, is that with my PB, I wasn't doing that ... I was wiping out the ambushes before wasting Snaptooth, without zoning out and back in.

I tried builds that had massive +Defense (usually vs Range) and they all came out ... very unsatisfactory. Eventually, I simply gave up on the whole idea of building for Defense and tried to go for a much more "balanced" approach where I wouldn't be relying on a One Trick Pony (with no Defense Debuff Resistance to back it up!) that could be easily negated either through debuffs or through exemplar/malefactor loss of set bonuses. In the end, I decided that +Defense just wasn't worth it, given the mix of the rest of the build.

In my experience, the most important "team support" powers are AoE Damage powers and your PB Aid Other power (can't remember the name off the top of my head). The second most important, that I've found are Control powers (of which the PB basically has NONE, for all intents and purposes) followed by the Leadership (not Fighting, Leadership!) and Medicine pools. I personally recommend Leadership for PBs and Medicine for WSs, due to access to WS Recall Friend (another power I can't remember the name of). Being able to Recall+Resuscitate is pretty useful for averting team wipes ... and I've gotten a LOT of mileage out of the full Medicine Pool on my WS, even with nothing more than single slots in all four powers.

Gleaming Bolt becomes somewhat (single action) "machinegun-light" with huge recharge bonuses. With enough recharge buff, the recharge time gets down to a pretty small fraction of a second, and in actual gameplay it feels like there's no pause between shots. I use Gleaming Bolt as a "filler" attack between my Cone and Target AoE attacks in Human form, and the two AoEs recharge so fast that I can often only get off two Gleaming Bolts before one of them is recharged and ready to use again. Makes for a very "active" (P)Blaster experience, and the Cone+AoE really lights up the screen.

Now while some people may say, "why don't you just use Nova for that?" are right that the Human form blasts are weaker than the Nova form ones, in Nova I can't:
  • run Leadership toggles (boosting my entire team, not just myself)
  • use Light Form (as an Oh $h!7 button)
  • Heal Other, Heal Self or Dull Pain
  • autofire Hasten
  • use my Shields to resist incoming damage
  • use Build Up for spike damage
Being able to run Leadership toggles is a really big boost to the teams I run on, and has greater returns the more the team sticks together. Adding +13.5% damage to everyone within 60 ft works out to be better than just +45% damage to my Nova form attacks. And when solo, being able to use Build Up allows my Human form attacks to come close to the damage throughput over time that I can get using Nova form.

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...
