I'd disagree with LGTF needing specific ATs. Yes, you do need a mix of abilities, but there's plenty of ATs that provide each of them. I've done one where our "control" was, IIRC, a dark defender (or maybe a corr, I forget) and an elec/elec blaster. With the holds from their main powersets plus the APP/PPPs, they had enough to lock down the greens. No need for a dedicated control AT.

Of course, for every run like this I get some idiot refusing to start without a troller/dom even though we've got two fully IOed out Fortunatas who between them could probably nearly stack enough hold to lockdown an AV...

The truth is that for optimal team performance, it is a good idea to have a decent variety of ATs on the team, but not any specific combo at all. Any team will generally benefit from a Defender, Controller or Corruptor, and a tank makes tactics a lot easier. But it's seriously only at super-self-imposed-challenge-pro level that you have to seriously start worrying about everyone's AT and powersets.

Still, it's not uncommon to run into people who haven't figured that out. I remember back in my speed-Katie days, right after the team finished forming someone commented, "Oh geez, we have three defenders on the team. This is going to take forever." I was boggled, since besides my emp, the other two were a rad and a dark. So I said back, "Are you kidding? This is going to be so easy it's insane. Ladies, let's acquaint this gentleman with the defender handshake." We blew through the mobs, including all the Marys, like they were tissue paper.

"Home is where, when you have to go there, they have to let you in."

Aye, variety helps too given that Defender powersets are so diverse. A kin, a rad, a dark and an emp are going to play completely differently- and that's often a strength, since they'll all benefit each other in different ways to make the team far more well-rounded.
