Fire/Cold AV Soloer

Was kicking around the idea earlier that Fire/Cold could take down a Pylon/AV/GM faster than Ill/Cold, or at least keep up in speed, while maybe not being as survivable because of no PA. While also not being stupidly pricey, minus the LotGs, you can get those via Merits. So I sat down tonight & put this build together, I could use some help with improvements if you can see how to do so.

A couple of things I need help fixing; No self Heal, & I can't see how to get a hefty amount of +regen while staying softcapped & a high amount of recharge.

Accuracy. I don't know how much is needed to be at 95% against +4s so the slotting of Heatloss, FF, & Benumb worry me a little. If they have enough, then no worries.

Recharge. I would've liked more, I think Benumb will be perma along with Hasten, or at least close to it after the Spiritual Alpha. But I would like Heatloss & The Spider pet to be closer to Perma as well.

Defense. I know the build is softcapped, but is there any room for Cushion incase of Debuffs?

Looks like a pretty decent build. I would think that you should be able to handle a smashing/lethal boss like battle maiden pretty solidly. You will run into some problems with any AV that doesnt use those damage types. All I can say here is that depending on your budget, this is a pretty solid build for your stated purpose.

Yea I saw people were capping S/L as well as Range. I don't know what else I could change up to get some Ranged Defense though.

This build is rough and there are a few things I would still change. It also is going to be slightly endurance challenged but overall, its pretty solid IMHO. I hope that it gives you some good ideas

I would probably take the Fighting Pool and slot Weave, if soft-capping is a goal. Helps you save on slots and avoid crazy slotting to get set bonuses.

(Assuming S/L capping is your goal)

Candidates for dropping: Snow Storm, Tactics, Smoke and Vengeance.

All four are nice powers, but ...

- Probably have enough slow to not need Snow Storm (that's the case with my Fire/Cold Corr)

- With Sleet and its massive def debuff up, shouldn't need tactics (in theory ... again, I don't on my Fire/Cold Corr)

- Vengeance is nice, but Weave is nicer (and you still have a place for the LOTG)

- I personally don't like Smoke but YMMV

With saved slots, I'd focus on up-slotting the Shields - you're going to need to keep those pimps alive if you're going pylon soloing. shields + maneuvers + artic fog isn't godly defense, but every little bit helps.

EDIT: the things I would change (mostly being cost related I tried to honor the budget limitations you seem to be trying to keep) would be:

hotfeet to the sirocco's dervish set
char to unbreakable constraint set
flashfire to absolute amazement set

To the OP:

I suspect you are right about this trumping Ill/Cold ....if you can survive.

Silverado on his many AV killing rampages did it on his Fire x3 controller. In one of the threads he chimed in and gave some advice on someones Fire/Cold build. It was some time back but worth the read (its possible the forums ate that thread). That may be a good place to start (or send him a PM). You have received some good advice so going back that far may not be necessary.

Unless you are committed to Mace Mastery I would recommend Stone Mastery instead. Earth's Embrace may not recharge quick enough to be a healing substitute, but unslotted it will put you at the Controller HP cap. This gives you some room to breath if the AV gets a lucky streak in while you pull the ol' tricorder (Aid Self) out.

...but throw in Grant Invis and the two Pet +Def IOs (+5 Def each) and you can easily get 40+ defense on your imps. Add Frostworks for good measure. This tough, imps could provide a good distraction vice becoming a liability.

On a side note it is possible to softcap without the use of the Fighting Pool. I wouldn't recommend it if you are planning to run Hot Feet all the time, even with 95% Heatloss end recovery up-time.

I've never been a fan of softcapping S/L defense, and if you ask me? that may as well be one of the points that should be included in that 'misinformation thread' floating around in the Player Questions forum.

Why I'm not a big fan of softcapping S/L only? here are the reasons:

Silverado, you really hit strongly on a point I was alluding to earlier. With only smashing and lethal defense capped, many AVs will be out of reach.

I'm thinking one problem with a Fire/Cold is the squishiness of the pets. On my Illu/Cold I often have my shield buffed Phantasm or Tarantula wiped out if the enemies I'm facing have meaningful AoE.

As for soft-capping, Ranged AND S/L is possible. I'm currently collecting A merits to accomplish a build on my Illu/Cold to do that. Build is a secret - for now - but I can provide help after I've slept some.

And that's just off the top of my head, the list of reasons goes on.
This was something that also troubled me some. I also don't have enough Set knowledge to cap S/L & Range, while still having a decent amount of recharge. Not with the amount of money I have at my disposal anyway. About going Stone Epic, I thought about it, but that would involve giving up P Ray in exchange for either Hurl Bolder, eh, or Seismic Smash. While SS does sound pretty damn tasty, that also involves me going to into Melee & possibly killing my imps in the process. I guess that's just a trade off, Earth's Embrace or -res/good ranged attack.

I guess I should state that this isn't solely for AVs & GMs. Granted that this toon will be doing them a lot, it's also for general PvE with a couple friends. The buffs can lack in this area because I hate buffing in the first place =P

Below is a build with Ranged and Slash/Lethal close to soft capped. I didn't finish the build for the reasons below.

Personally I'm not sure this build is worth it as an AV specialist. I would prefer Ranged defense backed by Slash/Lethal Resistance and Indomitable Will, using a jet pack to hover out of range of the AV, who should be held in place with immobs to keep him or her in range of Hot Feet. Indom Will will also possibly cap you to Psi attacks. Note that my build assumes that you are running Tactics.

Even with this build I have a strong feeling most AVs are going to shred your pets. Cold Domination offers very poor protection overall. The reason it squeaks by on teams is due to stacked Defenses. With nothing but your shields on them, pets are going to drop at the first hint of an AoE. I actually pulled the extra defense out of your shields because the difference between slotted and unslotted is pretty much not worth the slots.

So, I said in the last post that probably wasn't how I'd approach things. I spent a little time on it and came up with something more in line with how I'd do it. It is NOT perfect as I built it in less than an hour. Also note that the assumption on this build is it is specifically an AV specialist and nothing else. The character would not be optimal for fighting his or her way through normal missions.

FYI I'm unsure if you can pull off that slotting of Hot Feet. It comes down to how much Heat Loss is padding your endurance.

This build has mezz protection most of the time, is capped to Range, to Psi most of the time, and is capped to Smash/Lethal after eating one normal [EDIT: Oops, medium] purple inspiration. I would bring a bunch, and a bunch of heals as well.

If there were a way to do it, I'd add Provoke to the build to taunt the AV away from your imps. Sadly there is no room for that.

Note that this build is alpha slot neutral. You'd want to adjust it based on which slot you use. Both Spiritual and the damage one have advantages for this build. You may even want to switch off between them for each type of fight, using Spiritual for mezz and psi heavy AVs by making Indom Will have better up time.

Here's a quick build.

  • Endurance usage is quite high without Heat Loss, but with the uncommon Alpha the downtime should be less than ten seconds, and with HL up endurance is never a problem, even if you only hit one person with it.
  • I didn't really focus on just AV soloing because I get bored fast playing one trick ponies, don't know about you, though. If you want to focus more on AV soloing you could drop the purple proc in Fire Cages and swap Psi Tornado for something more useful (like WoC for purple bonuses). I just picked them to make your AoE more effective for team play.
  • Ranged Def isn't quite 45%. It was a bit harder to get there with this build because you don't have a Confuse power (unless you pick WoC) for an easy 5% Def and I assumed you wouldn't want to get the PvP 3% Def IO. But as I said, it was a quick build so it can be improved.
  • Sleet is slotted a bit funny (similar to my Illu/Cold's current build). Bad thing is that base Rech enhancement is a bit low, good thing is that it benefits fully from any tier Spiritual Alpha. With high global rech and the Alpha you could shave off maybe two seconds by fully enhancing it for Rech.
  • I don't like the KB proc in Flashfire (picked for 3.13% Ranged Def), but as long as you use Fire Cages first it won't be a problem.
  • One slot free for you to choose. I didn't see anything really obvious that warranted the slot so you can play with it if you like.

I think it is quite an effective build when keeping in mind that it has zero purples, but as said before, someone who put more time into it should be able to improve it.
