Low Framerate on New Computer

Hey, gurus. I've tried a few things, but I'm not sure what the issue is. I built myself a new system a few months ago and built it so that I could run CoH with the new graphics upgrade in Ultra Mode. Given the specs, I figured that I'd be able to run it at least near the high end. But when I try to play, I get really low frame rates, and it doesn't seem to improve when I lower the settings, either. I'm wondering if there's something more fundamentally wrong that I'm just missing. For what it's worth, I can run Star Trek Online at it's highest settings without any trouble at all, so that also makes me think there's something more basic that I'm missing. I did check on the video driver to be sure, and I think that's the latest driver version.

EDIT: Oh, and happy holidays, everyone.

Here's my COHHelper log followed by the HijackThis log:

Wow. Just.. wow. Turn those down.

If you run Microsoft Security, then make sure you put it CoX into the excluded section

With the settings posted above, /showfps was generally between 7.5 and 8. I turned those two items all the way off, and only got to between 9.5 and 10. I played around with the settings, and I got the same values at FSAA at 8x and AF at 4x, so that's what I set them to. But it still isn't as smooth as I'd expect it to be.

I double checked and added extra exclusions for CoH in Symantic, which I use for security, but that didn't change anything.

(Note that testing is done while superjumping through Grandville.)

And Grandville is like the Crysis of Cox zones

Neither of those should be giving the gtx 470/480 a problem.

QR: Shouldnt give issues, but testing in Grandville is more than likely the place to test what the WORST framerate you can expect...

So what are your frames in other parts of the world? I would think that setup would run most areas at max settings. You might try turnin occlusion settings completly off and maybe roll back to an older driver. Check and see if anyone else if having problems with that driver/card combo on guru3d.com

Just so you may be able to narrow things down a little, i've got a GTX 480 running 260.89 drivers. I did have 260.99 but it made all my text super small and was unreadable.

I'm running with everything on max which gives a decent enough frame rate while out doors. Using your comparison, i get 40 fps jumping through GV. Capped at 75 in mish due to vertical sync.

Maybe try those drivers?

That's why I picked there. I figure I should go with the worst case scenario. But even in Gville, it shouldn't be that bad.

I figured the same thing about my comp. Framerate is the same pretty much everywhere, that's what also lead me to think it was something besides the setup. Even in the character selection screen, it's choppy.

Thanks for the tip. I'll find those drivers and try them out.

I appreciate all the help, everyone. This is why we have the best MMO community.

Turn off Ambient Occlusion completely.

I believe you'll see a world of difference in your framerates.

And just as an FYI, STO runs on DirectX. CoH runs on OpenGL. In other words, just because STO runs fine has no bearings on how CoH would run. Apples and oranges.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

TJ, you sir are fantastic. I turned that off, and the framerate jumped right up to about 30. I was able to tweak it to get some occlusion settings without any drop off, but the change in that one took away the choppiness. If it stays like it is now, I'll be more than happy, but I'd still like to boost the framerate some more. 30 still seems low for this computer, even in Grandville. But it's more of a hobby to get it up now, rather than a necessity.

Odd. From the settings in the first post, I assumed Ambient Occlusion was off already. The log seems to say exactly that.

But yes, Ambient Occlusion is a performance hog, basically doing multiple lighting passes as far as I can tell.

You have to look at ALL of the settings dealing with Occlusion to get the full picture. The Ambient Occlusion setting is a slider ranging from Off to Ultra with several settings between. If you enable the Advanced Occlusion settings, it opens a new section labeled Advanced Ambient Occlusion Settings where you can set Strength, Blur and Resolution independently as you can see in infallible's settings below. If I'm using the Advanced Occlusion settings, I generally like to set the Ambient Occlusion slider to Off first to make sure that there are no conflicts with the manual settings. When you enable Advanced Occlusion settings, the Ambient Occlusion changes from a slider to the word Customized. I believe that the registry entry for Off and Customized are the same, but I'd have to change some settings around and test it to be certain.

In any event, I'm glad that helped you infallible. The only other thing I could suggest would be changing to a previous driver version. I've seen reports from both nVidia and AMD users that the newest drivers are having odd problems with the game. Of course, if you do decide to try an older driver, be sure to properly uninstall the current driver, reboot in Safe Mode and run Driver Sweeper, then reboot and install the older driver. By running Driver Sweeper it removes all the left-over files that the uninstall doesn't actually remove so that you don't get a corrupt installation.
