On-screen artifacts with ATI HD5770, suggestions?
I have the same issues, no clue about a solution though.
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=243213
I have a 5770 and experience the same exact blocky corruption on the log in screen only (and its only if I go BACK to it, at first load its fine).
So I wouldn't worry to much about it, as I've never seen it happen ingame.
I get the same thing in character select with a 5850, and just like psydar, it's only if i return to it. Not too worried.
I'm unable to duplicate the type of corruption described with my HD 5770's running under Windows 7, Windows Xp, or Linux, across the Catalsyt 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, 10.9, 10.10b, 10.10c, and 10.11 drivers.

I see those artifacts on the selection screen for the initial login, and subsequent ones. But yeah, they DO go away. I'm somewhat more concerned with the dual-monitor video tearing that occurs outside COH (granted, outside the scope of this conversation, but worth noting as I started getting this issue at the same time as the selection screen artifacting).

Tearing and artifacting to me often means overheating...
If you can or care to, open the case, and direct a small desk fan into it and let that run for 5 minutes or so. Load up the game and see if that solved it.
Worth a try!
The Sly Bold Renardine - " I am Scraptastic!"
I don't have any heat issues and just to be sure I ran it with the case open. I also blew out whatever dust had collected on the inside. I only see the issue on the character selection screen and when I hit the back button. It happened for me after changing the driver version. See my original post above.
I'm kinda butt-hurt that nobody responded to my post on this issue. I'll get over it though.
Yeah this only started when I changed my drivers accidentally via Steam, which apparently has a facility to update the ol' Radeonandonandon drivers. I have no idea what version I am running now!
Also, I just logged in and checked and I no longer get the blocks of black on the screen.
Hrm. More on this:
Catalyst Control Center seems to be hopelessly bugged ATM. (i.e., CCC never starts up. Rightclick on your desktop, and on the context menu select "Catalyst Control Center". Cursor spins for a second, then acts like nothing happened.)
I haven't tried dialing back to previous driver revisions, but I've tried Driver Sweeper for uninstalling ATI, then removing all remains from the system, then attempting a reinstall for ATI 10.11. Drivers install quickly and it's giving 3D acceleration, but the CCC is nonresponsive.
This is a recurring bug apparently with ATI users; there've been a number of suggestions on ATI's forum about how to get the CCC to work without much success.
I mention it here because I think my issues are temperature related. I reactivated an ATI overlay in WIn7 so I can monitor the device temperature. I begin to see artifacts in the game and on my system once the VPU temp hits around 60ish degrees Celsius. It peaks around 70ish.
During this time, the fan on my video card is NOT spinning up accordingly to moderate the temperature. This is something that I didn't notice 'til I took off my headphones. The ATI card's heatsink/fan was always a bit whiny since I got it, and I can definitely hear the fan spin up when I first reboot. But whatever governs the temperature sensor in the CCC app doesn't seem to be active since i'm unable to get into CCC at all. It used to be commonplace that, as action picked up in a 3D game, I'd hear the fan spin up to match. Not so anymore.
I THINK this is what the issue is: CCC is misbehaving/not loading correctly, so temperature governance of the VPU is out the window. VPU temperature gets higher, video starts acting weird, in 2D/3D. (I'll watch to see if I begin to see the video tearing during certain temperatures.)
...any suggestions for fixing the CCC? This isn't a COH question now, but all the tricks on AMD's web forums haven't helped (including wiping out ATI references in the Windows/Assembly folder - I just don't see entries there at all, which I'd guess is also a problem).

I got no suggestions but I am sending you happy thoughts.
I upgraded to a 5850 in the weekend, and have the same black boxes on return to the login screen. I'm pretty sure it's not a heat issue at my end.
(I didn't get them on the 8800GT I had minutes before that, so I'm guessing it's an ATI thing somehow).
Turgenev,
By any chance do you use a program called SpeedFan?
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
It will show you all your individual fan speeds and temps.
Also check the ATI Overdrive tab in the CCC make sure you do not have "enable manual fan control" checked, and the speed dragged way down. Sounds silly, but check.

You have no anti-malware programs running, according to the HijackThis log. Of course.. it may be that I don't recognise it... but then >.>
Try downloading these programs, installing them (as admin) and running them (as admin) and removing any and all detritus they find.
I'll note again, in Windows Vista and Windows 7 you MUST run anti-malware products with administrator priviledges so that they have access to remove all evils they find. While they will occasionally be able to remove malware without admin priviledges, it is far less guaranteed.
Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Ad-Aware
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
And of course.. an anti-virus program of your choice. I'd suggest one of the following.
Avast!
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
OR (Never more than two Anti-Virus and never more than two Firewall products should be installed let alone running, at the same time.)
AVG Free
http://free.avg.com/au-en/homepage
And of course for a general system clean up... I'd recommend trying CCleaner from Piriform. Link: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download
In the long term I'd suggest putting on a commercial firewall too, instead of relying on the one Windows has built-in. True, it has improved over the years but it's still a better idea to go with a third party one (which should require you to disable the windows one to avoid conflicts, when you install it).
Between the Loyalists and Resistance, I'd be tempted to support Praetorian Hamidon.
One side uses mind police and will "disappear" you and the other uses poison gas and bombs on civilians. Hamidon? He'll just have a tree eat you. Much simpler. If we're all going to be oppressed and/or killed by someone, it might as well be the walking trees. At least they don't speak in annoying code or doublespeak. They just devour you. |
I'd love to check, but my problem is that the CCC doesn't open anymore. It's a really persistent bug in the ATI driver releases that comes up regularly... first time I had it, but it's REALLY irking me right now, cuz that's exactly what I want to check. ;(

"solution was to clear out the Windows GAC (Global Assembly Cache). In Windows 7, you can browse directly to "C:\Windows\assembly". Sort by "Public Key Token", then delete everything with the Token "90ba9c70f846762e" (ATI's key). You'll obviously need Administrator privileges. No reboot needed either. Reinstalled CCC and it ran perfectly!
The GAC lets you share DLL's that are the same version number. If it's in the GAC, any installer will NOT install a new DLL - it'll use the one in the GAC. If the GAC DLL is corrupted, you're majorly SOL.
When I reinstalled the CCC, it took longer to install then it had before. Presumably, this was due to the installer copying all the correct DLL's to my hard drive. And no ATI DLL's have made it back into my GAC.
Uninstalling CCC, and then:
1. Check that (Program Files folder )/ATI Technologies/ATI.ACE is empty
2. Check (Windows folder)/Assembly folder to see if there's any files with Public Key Token of "90ba9c70f846762e" (Sort by Public key token to get a easier view). All these tokens should be uninstalled by right clicking and uninstalling.
3. Check that (Document and Settings)/(User)/AppData/Local/ATI/ACE is empty
4. Reinstall CCC"

I had this same problem and found this solution online that worked for me.I am pasting it below but it originally came from here:

I'll fuss with a few things tonight...
Phedra: Thanks for the tips. My malware scanner of choice is MBAM (new version is out, btw), and I gave the system a thorough scrub (nothing found) when I started investigating. The CCC issue seems to be a common one, and as HyBeams noted one with a potential solution... if only I had the same circumstances that the fix seems to require...)

Turg Fiction: Ghost in the Machine Acts III & IV coming 2012!

Good morning:

I've been debugging this for about a week now off and on with sporadic success, so I'm presenting my symptoms, along with the usual suspects of info requested, to see if anyone has opinions/experience with the same issue.
Symptoms history: I've had this box since around April/May of this year. Zero problems until last week, when I went away for a week (work trip, powered down the PC) and came back. I noticed on my dual monitor setup that I would get what looked like video tearing for very brief intervals (less than a second) on both monitors, in roughly the same locations (lower quarter of the monitors). This would be in Windows (2D) itself, not not limited to any game.
I've done a full uninstall of the 10.8 ATI driver (not using a specific utility though, just thru Windows uninstall), then reinstalled with the latest driver set (as of this post, 10.11). Symptoms persisted. Suspected possible video card hardware issue, so I contacted Dell Support and allowed them to investigate. They ran a BIOS update for the system and the video card (although I'd already done the video card BIOS back in May, so it didn't apply). Post-reboot, this seemed to resolve the issues for about four days.
Yesterday, I noticed artifacting in the character selection screen (what would appear as scattered colored blocks on-screen). This went away once I selected a character and entered the game.
I'm concerned about the video card itself and that it might be fried or otherwise damaged. Box is on a quality UPS, and my wife (who was home while I was away) did not cite any power fluctuations or spikes that could have affected our circuit. I'm leaning towards hardware fault here, but it helps to have someone else spotcheck and see if there's an obvious solution I'm incapable of seeing.
Any thoughts on this? Experience with revision 10.11 good or bad? Posting COHHelper and HijackThis logs now. If anyone can review the below material, I'd be grateful. Remember: This also appears in 2D mode, although admittedly I haven't seen it since Dell got their greasy mitts on my system last Friday.
Cheers, and thanks for any assistance.
-T.
