Playing CoH with gestures
Thats amazing stuff you've done there Dr Gamma. Machine vision's come a long way.
I agree about conventional games and unconventional controllers.
Most game genres we play at the moment are designed for use with the standard controllers of the time, eg keyboards, mice etc.
When a new interface comes along, its best to abandon ideas like first person shooter or platformer and start from scratch.
iPhone games often do this really well, using tilt or multiple contact points as part of the gameplay.
The Wii was a bit of a problem in this way in that games studios found it most economically viable to port PS3/XBox games to the Wii, and that meant not taking advantage of the unique controller.
But CoH definitely makes an awesome demo for this kind of tech.
...snipped to preserve space...
Guess that's another reason why people hope gesture interfaces and other new forms of interaction do well with games.
I guess I'm too deeply involved in my -own- definition of a video game (as a hobby that I enjoy to relax with) rather than the seemingly more popular definition of it (something people do for -fun-), if that makes any sense. And use, the fact that gestures do enhance immersion definitely helps with the fun.
Thanks!

suddenly, the best attack chains are expressed as interpretive dance and mime youtube videos.
it's an interesting implementation dr gamma, kudos.
is scale an issue? i wonder about finger gesturing at a desktop level, rather than hand gesturing.
i have my nuke gesture already in mind.

Edit: What gesture did you think of and for what Nuke? *Wonders if it's the finger or something similar...*

I'll be honest, I didn't read the thread, just watched the videos, and wanted to say I'm squeeing. I realize it has a ways to go, but since I'm one of those people who hates sitting still, I've been jonesing for more active gameplay in all the games I play, and the chance to act out powers is damn cool. Also, I have nothing constructive to add. Just wanted to mention I like it!
Very impressive, Dr. Gamma! While I don't think I would like to use Gestures2Go to play COH all the time, I do think it would be a great exercise routine for a 30 minute workout.
One Rikti Ship Raid worth of gesturing would burn a TON of calories!

Overlord of Dream Team and Nightmare Squad
that was cool and I immediately called my GF in to see it. This is freaking phenmoninal, I wanna stand at my computer and work out playing city of heroes throwing my arms around like a wanna be super hero, I think that would be a ton of fun. I know it sounds dorky, that's not sarcasm, I really would love to play CoH with this!
"Where does he get those wonderful toys?" - The Joker
That is insanely cool. Is it possible to download it somewhere and experiment/use it?
@MidnightGuard - on Union you may know me as:
Mr. Vile - Electroman X - Zenodorus - Battler
Naga Knight - Stinkspitter
So.
Freaking.
Cool.
Earlier this morning I was gleeing about a different sort of future-is-now thing, and this just got me going again.
Would I play a game based on the concept? Fyeah. Would I play CoX as a workout using gesture control? Also fyeah.
This is amazing.
Ouch, I can't believe I forgot to check for answers to this post for so long! Sorry about it, and if any of you guys who posted see this again, thanks for the enthusiasm. Several people commented on the active/exercise aspect of this and indeed it is an important aspect, although I also like how it seems lots of fun, too (at least for short stretches).
As for letting people play with it, so far I'm not really allowed too. Mostly because it's not in tip top shape yet (there are a few bugs left, and one very annoying restriction: for now you have to be wearing long sleeves for the recognition to work right, and that sucks), so we'd rather not put it out there and get a bunch of people disappointed. Still working on it though (not as intensely as I was last year, new projects came up, but still working), and once it's ready, it will be available, free and open-source. I'll let you guys know when.
Playing CoH with Gestures
Can't believe I haven't read about this before. Any update on progress? Is it still being created? Also, how viable is it to use the gesture recognition as an additonal input method instead of a replacement? For example, say I was using my keyboard and mouse, but wanted a fast way to use inspirations without moving my hand off the movement keys. Could I assign gestures to simulate certain keys, thus allowing me to bind a command to an unusual key (say the "," key) and execute it with a quick gesture? Sorry for the questions but this has me pretty excited

Not to mention all the good points Samuel brought up, too.
