First 50?
Come up with a concept for your character that you like, that helped a lot on my first 50, then team with a steady group of friends, that also help a lot with my first 50.
I went through a lot of different characters, untill my Claws/Regen hit 50. |
Even today, my Illusion/Radiation is my favorite character, and the first one I pull out for anything new or challenging.
And that first Scrapper I rolled up? He's still around in the mid 20's on a server I don't go to very often. The Blaster, Tank and Defender all eventually got to 50. I'm up to 19 level 50's now.
I have a group of buddies that I team with most nights -- we've been teaming and chatting on Ventrilo for -- jeeze -- about 4 years now. They are probably the main reason I'm still around. So the best thing to do is find a good group of friends and ask them to help you stay on target to get a character to 50.
LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

My first was an Emp/Dark Defender and, while I enjoyed him quite a bit while leveling up, he became less and less useful as I met more skilled players and started grouping with them only. I switched to Kinetics defender after that to really bolster the already awesome group of friends I made in the Midnight Cove and Cold Front SGs. Even then the fit wasn't quite right. So I took my friends advice and found a tool to meet the aspects of the game I really enjoyed. And so I found my main after reading Local_Man's guide to Ill/Rads, I began working on quite possibly the most fun character I've played in any game, and now that he is as close to perfect as I can imagine him being, I can really enjoy the game. It fills all the needs I have for a fun game experience and allowed me to chase down my goal of soloing every hard target in the game on one character (I'm almost done, gotta go get the redside ones now that I finished up blue). What I learned from that was that you dont need to focus on toons that will fit in well with people here or there, or be an ultimate ubar farmer or some such thing. Just play what you like, find something you enjoy and focus on that. Your friends will support you.
I've enjoyed most of the stuff I've tried so far. For very different reasons. I think right now the /dev blaster may be winning just on having the most support for play styles I tend to enjoy when soloing.
Glad you found one that (at least for now) warrants your attention.
I'm going to echo the "40s lament." I have 3 50s, all blasters, with 2 more at 35+ (what can I say, I like shooting stuff). While a /Dev is very survivable when you take the time to set things up correctly, it will be a long (and rather boring) road 40-50 unless you find some worthwhile teams. My advice would be to take the Tina Macintyre and Maria Jenkins arcs. They are arcs that a lot of people do, or want to do, (since they lead to the Dimensional Warder badge, and thus the Portal Jockey accolade) so finding teammates for a "Praetorian AV team" is fairly easy.
Should you get to 50 and find yourself looking for your next long-term commitment, I highly recommend an Ice/Ice blaster, or practically any dominator that suit your fancy. Ice/Ice blasters get 3 holds total (2 ranged, 1 melee), and their slowing abilities make them very survivable since the enemies are either dead or helpless before they can get to you. As for dominators, I like them since I can do the same thing I can on the Ice blaster: Contain and shoot. Makes for a lot of fun combinations.
I hope the blaster continues to work for ya!
@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.
