Phoo, I think FF8 deserves that title. :P
FF9 went away from the more serious look of 8 (and to some degree 7), making things more cartoony, but it regained a lot of the fantasy that FF was starting to lack. <_<;;
And I'd consider there to be four FF titles for the Playstation, as Tactics is just as developed as the other three games (stuff like Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon, the racing game, and other things, were not quite so developed...).

Seriously though, 9 is my favorite. 7 is a close second, partially due to nostalgia, and partially cuz it's FFVII.
Also, everyone knows Garland = Chaos = Nemesis
Spoony seems to think Final Fantasy X is the worst of them all. I haven't played that, myself, but I've played VIII and it sucked.

I'd say XII is the worst of all the ones I've seen.
Yes, I'd rather play X2 over it.
X wasn't horrible, and I liked the sphere grid. Plot had highs and lows, and I never managed to get any final weapon except for Yuna's. I did totally pwn Omega without even trying, though.
Loved IX, even though I haven't ever beaten it yet.
VII got me into it, but looking back (and even trying to play it again) I realize how horrible it actually is.
But of the pre-playstation era I've only played IV, V, VI, Legends 3, and Adventure, so I don't know who Garland is. Didn't make it far enough into IX to have it revealed either, though upon mention I think he had just shown up.
FF6 is superior to all. Praise Kefka, may his reign as God be everlasting.
FFIV and FFVI are the best. Ever. And FFV is right behind them.
FFVII was alright, and the best of the three PSX titles. FFVIII wasn't too bad. As I said, FFIX was the worst. Players asked for a return to the more fantasy-themed roots of the game, and Square gave us this thinly veild middle finger.
FFX was the best of the three PS2 titles. Never played FFX-2. FFXII probably wouldn't have been so bad if it handn't used FFOnline's engine. You can't really use an MMO engine for a SPCRPG.
Both FFOnline and FFOnline 2 are jokes.
