Agro?
Argo in this game is the most random and silly thing I have ever seen. If im in a cave in Steel Canyon a boss in a factory in Skyway city gets agro'd. I find it aggravating because I solo a lot and to shoot a mob in a group of 3-4 (fully expecting the 3-4 to come) just to see two more groups of 3-4 come running in from 3/4 of the way across the room. Then, the same exact situation I am able to pick them off 1 by 1 with 0 agro from anyting else.
Whats the leash range on mobs? 8327589671866484578378617657974589473055 feet? I dont know because sometimes its also .2 inches. The latter of the 2 only seems to occur when kiting is necessary. I played Warhammer for a long time and agro was manageable and the mobs leashes were not ridiculous. Is it supposed to be completely random here in hero land or does the kiddie game require intimate knowledge of finite math to figure out agro?....along with everything else. Yes I am horrible at math so please dont reply with...well mobs have an occular pattern of .9019% in a perimeter of 4.52*1.1116 (-45.66 to the 9th) re-occuring. (I totally made some of that up). A simple yes its random or no its not and it requires enough math to make an alien who built a spaceship with a coat hanger, 2 pieces of tape and a tube sock head explode. |
If you're running a character that can routinely handle +4, 8x missions then yes, the game is going to continue to be easy for that kind of character. The "challenge" you're looking for is to run a AT/Powerset combo that CAN'T handle +4, 8x missions no matter how good a player you are. Trust me when I say many of them can't. YMMV.

Okay, first off, aggro in this game is not random. At all. It follows a very specific formula that you say that you're not really interested in, so I won't put it here. However, it is not random.
If you shoot a guy across the room, the other people in that room won't notice unless they are part of his group or are VERY close together. You may be seeing ambushes, though, which aggro to either you or the spot that you were in when they were generated. These can come from rooms away to attack you, and may give the appearance that they have been aggro'd at the same time as the group you're aiming at, but they're not.
If you are just seeing disparate groups attack you when you attack one, record it and let us take a look at it. There maybe something there that you're not sharing with us.
And yes, AoEs are fairly powerful in this game. They're kinda meant to be. Still, not many people can survive at +4/+8 settings without a lot of IOs.

I'm not going to sit here and say it's always 100% predictable, but it's certainly not random. You don't need to be a math genius to manage agro. You just need to understand there are several factors that regulate it and once in a while things don't always go your way. That's what makes some scenarios challenging and fun.
Also, I am under the impression that higher-ranked enemies alert their buddies in a larger radius. Shooting a boss will bring more guys to you from a larger radius around him than shooting a minion. Shooting a minion farthest from the rest is the way to minimize the number of people you're pulling. And watch that you don't knock foes into other spawns with knockback, which may alert them too.

By the way, there's no leash range on mobs in this game with the exception of some groups in praetoria.
Guess the best advice is...CoH is not your standard MMO. Stop trying to play like it is
Go try the original Everquest if you want to see crazy aggro. You could shoot a gnoll at the bottom of Blackburrow and it would come running after you and bring along every single gnoll it met along the way.
Aggro here is very simple and easy (imo) as long as you just pay attention to what happens. Heck, on my AR/dev blaster, I can stand in the middle of one spawn without aggro and take out a completely different spawn (cloaking device+smoke grenade).

As the others have mentioned, you may be getting patrols or ambushes. Also, you mentioned that you were in tunnels, there could easily be another mob in a side tunnel that you didn't spot, but is close enough to the mod you attacked to draw aggro.
The post was ment to be a little silly. Some of you people really need to unbuckle your belt a little and loosen up. My char is fairly well IO'ed and running +4 x8 takes me sooooo long its silly but I do like to get stuff done in between spawns while my t9 recharges....and more often than not I die several times and have to leave mish to buy inspirs but thats my thing, I dont know why. Thank you all for not putting some crazy math formuli (Oo is that a word?) as an answer. Probably just what Lothic said that I am not used to the games agro yet.
Just a word of advice: we who are reading your posts have no idea what tone your post is in, unless you let us know. As such, we will take it how we read it. I, for instance, took your post seriously, because I saw nothing in it which suggested otherwise. If you want a post to be a little silly, feel free to do so, but don't be surprised if other people have no idea what you're trying to do.

Sometimes I feel like the direction the enemy is facing can impact whether or not they react to what's going on around them as well. This may or may not be the case, but it is a common tactic some people use when trying to pull enemies from mobs individually.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
I seem to recall either Geko or Castle confirming that most mobs had a oval/offset circle of Perception, making it easier indeed to sneak up on them.

And I recall in Highkeep(?) there was one mob that would frequently run away from you, and creating a "train" (as it was called in eq) out of most of the zone. Then it would return to you... |

Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

Not that I can see.
But even then if he did, the aggro cap has been the same for at least that long. At best you could argue that the aggro has been reduced, as you can no longer herd PP or a mission map.

Did it ever occur to anyone that AoE in this game is ABSURDLY powerful? +4 x8 = run in, AoE, repeat 50 times. Does it get any better or more challenging?
Ok enough questions for now. KK bye
