Log out now?

I would love an option to bypass the 30 second logout timer like we do with the "quit" option.

Or lower the timer...

Or remove the timer altogether...

Any of these would make my day go just a little bit smoother.

I was always under the impression that the current system was to prevent quick escape situations.

Eh, I still use /quit and click the exit now button. Just not sure what the OP is getting at.

I'm getting at being able to log out faster to switch to alts and such (I know at least 15 other people personally who have 10+ alts, and I switch pretty frequently sometimes).... and with the ability to actually log to the character screen for once instead of having to log all the way back in... it would please me greatly to see the time at least cut to 15 seconds or something.

I think disabling the ability to logout while in combat would suffice to nix the "Quick escape" deal, because as you mentioned quitting works just fine for that.

Ah, I see now. I got confused when it was mentioned on quit - I thought you meant out of the game rather than switching toons. I thought I19 was making a change to this (and I could be completely imagining that since coffee not at 100% yet! ).

A number of threads have suggested this and I always would like something different for switching toons while playing.

Yup, this would really do nothing for you. Your character stays in-game for 30 seconds anyways, to prevent you from both griefing and trying to get out of a death by logging out. Because of that, if you tried to log in before the 30 seconds was up anyways, you couldn't, because you'd already be logged in. So a "log out now" button would functionally have no effect.

Okay, then I'd like to lower the time a character stays in game. THEN have a log out now button

I mean, ideally it sounds like a nice idea but if you try it in PVP you're going to die anyway, and debt is more trivial than crushing an ant under your thumb so.. either way I don't see much reason to keep it anymore.

A logout timer is an MMO industry standard that prevents all sorts of problems, not just preventing people from logging out to avoid character death. It takes the servers of these game at least a few seconds to properly account for people logging into and off of a game. My guess is that if they ever allowed people to log on and off without a timer that they'd see some kind of weird account conflicts or other potential problems with their login servers.

I suspect that no matter how sophisticated computers become there will never be a situation where a game like this won't impose at least a 10 or 15 second timer. That timer basically solves so many potential problems for the Devs that it's hard to imagine a simpler solution for them.

I'd agree that a full 30 seconds is probably a bit of overkill at this point.
But I'll never get my hopes up to think it'll ever be lowered to 0 seconds in game like this.

Actually, that's not true. Your character is immediately auto-booted from the game if you try to log in from one game while you're logged into another game. I'm running two machines here (a PC and a Laptop) and I've done that a few times by accident. As soon as you hit Log in on one machine, your other machine freezes and starts loading the log-in menu, while the other is told "This account is already logged in." However, if you click Log in again immediately thereafter, you will be able to log in just fine.

The reason we don't have a "Log out now" button is because it would allow you to bypass the counter by typing your password in fast enough and yanking your character from out of the game. Again, I've seen this done and done it myself a few times.

It's in the works, mentioned a few time by the Devs and, potentially, in I19. Unconfirmed, afaik however. Except for being WIP.

The Devs have told us for a long time that they were considering allowing us to quit directly to the character selection screen without having to log back in. They have never once mentioned the possiblity of lowering the 30 second timer. Those are two different things.

Log out to character selection has been confirmed in the recent Player Meet, by War Witch, and there's footage of that on YouTube. The 30 second time out, however, has not been mentioned.

There is also the possibility that the server needs time to save your character's progress.

It would suck to get a purple drop and log out, only to discover that the purple, and any xp/inf you gained, were lost because the server didn't get a chance to save that information.
