I'm about to start slotting this guy in a few days and I want to get his build ready. I worked up a build that I think will be good but I wanted to get some feedback before I respec him. Right now, he is 45 and I have him slotted only with common IOs. I went for recovery because in his present form he's an end hog. I know I'm over on the accuracy and regen caps. I would like to keep the set bonuses after those caps on the powers that I went over with though (unless someone suggests something better). Maybe you guys can suggest something similar to what I worked up but improved? Also, I took the damage procs wherever possible because I read somewhere that using them will increase my damage output because of the different types. I went for as many AoE's and as much defense and resistance as I could. I'm considering dropping either DN or DO for the widow pet but both of them are AoE's and I don't know if I want a pet on this toon unless I'm better off with one? Also, in his present form I put a taunt IO in every power that would take one just to help keep aggro off my teammates. I kind of like that approach and I'm thinking about frankenslotting a couple in there but I would have to adjust the build again for that as well. I also tried to go for and much recharge as possible too. I'm also not sure that I put the purples where they would be most effective...

If you replaced the three 4-slot Mako's Bite sets with all 4 non-proc Kinetic Combat parts and replaced Hecatomb with 4 Kinetic Combats + Mako's Bite quad, you'd softcap to melee. In my opinion, it would be a better choice than the small regen/recharge boost you lose, but might not be necessary with Darkest Night. I also swapped out a few other IO choices (namely in LotG and AAO), but those are just personal preferences. If I have more time, I may do a complete rebuild; I don't like not having Taunt at 10 and AAO at 28 seems really late, but that would be for MY toon.

Thanks, I really didn't worry about the order because I knew I'd have to rework it I was more concerned with the powers and slots. I was thinking about skipping taunt and slotting 1 or 2 taunts in the powers that would take them. That's why I took that one so late.

Ahh, in that case you could swap SS with taunt. I should note that Tough is not intended to be toggled. It's only taken to get weave and IO slotting.

I just started a Shield/Fire tank and I figured this may be the best thread to ask a question on:

Phalanx Fighting or Combat Jumping?

The description says that the defense only kicks in when there's team mates near you. However, Mids shows a similar bonus to CJ with 0 team mates selected. Is this accurate or does PF and CJ really offer comparable stats with no team mates near?

Check in the effect section. I'm pretty PF is the better of the two.

Yes, PF gives the player an unenhancable 5% defense to all positions, as well as some enhanceable defense that kicks in when teammates are nearby.

CJ's defense doesn't depend on teammates, it gives around 4% defense to all when fully enhanced.

So it terms of defense, PF is a little better.

I'm confused by the popularity of kinetic combat over mako's bite. 22.94% damage vs. 26.5%? Sure you get some smashing/lethal and melee def if you 4 slot kc, but mako's gives you a 3% damage buff to all your attacks. Is is just because of the extra defense? Won't the fact that you can kill stuff slightly faster negate that?

3% is not that big a deal in terms of damage. I terms of defense? Way more bang for your buck.

I think once i19 comes out I'll go for cj and hasten. I wanted them on this build but I didn't want to give anything else up.

look at the one second difference hasten will have on the powers.

I dont know what you are going for with the build, I am really baffled by it. As long as you enjoy it though...

You are not soft capped, but you could be. You went after bonuses that have decreased effect. You added KB protection even though you already have it.

Shield has positional defense so why would you be interested in typed defense? Obviously typed and positional gain 50% of each other (if you see what I mean).

I use typed defense for typed armour (ice, WP etc) and positional for postional armour (SD, SR etc)

I'm no expert that's why I come to you guys for advice. Maybe you can suggest something better that isn't radically different from what I was going for. The bonuses I was going for were in end reduction/modification/recovery (this toon is an end hog with just common IOs), recharge, accuracy, defense, and damage. I honestly don't know what the softcap is for defense but I was under the impression that I was at or close to it by following the build that Paragon posted as closely as I could. I noticed that both he and I forgot to slot resistance into deflection and thought that I would add that. I put the kb protection in because I thought I didn't have enough. Is active defense all I need? When I do start slotting this guy with sets I plan to go after the problems with end first and then worry about defense, etc.

I recommended the KC's because he was 4-slotting Mako's Bite for a meager 3% damage boost, while KC would give him a melee defense boost. While, yes, KC is more useful for the smash/lethal defense boost, it's melee defense boost is far more useful than the damage boost, IMO.

My "build" was just a quick one-over of your build, which I noticed you weren't softcapped (45% defense) and easily could be (at least in melee; softcapping for ranged/aoe would take a complete rebuild). I didn't modify your slot allocations or power selections any, but I certainly would have taken other stuff/slot differently.

take a look at the build I posted above. I can make a modification for the dark mastery if wanted. The above is what I am working towards. IE LotG+recharge and the other super expensive ones are coming, but not a priority. THe rest of the build is pretty cheap. It is really easy to soft cap, which is at 45%. Slotting the sets helps quite a bit on end reduction.

The main thing I don't like about this build is you didn't take any epic pool. The main reason I took soul mastery was to get the other 2 AoEs.

The main reasons I didn't go for your build were I didn't like the way you slotted health, and I want this guy to be primarily def/res and AoEs (that's why I took soul mastery). TT will help keep them from running away and DN/DO are 2 more AoEs. I almost always play on teams and I figure that the AoEs will help me keep aggro off of my teammates. On all of my toons I slot the 3 procs into health. I've gotten used to doing it that way and I'm not looking to change. I'd be willing to add the regenerative tissue proc if there's room. You also didn't take incinerate, which has high DoT. That perplexed me. I'm not concerned with going cheap either. I'm pretty good at playing the market.

Eh, I figured with 2 quickly recharging AoEs and Shield Charge, every minion and lieutenant would be dead. The 3 single target attacks (plus Brawl/Boxing, Nemesis Staff, Blackwand, and/or Sands of Miss) would more or less destroy any boss that survives. 2 more AoEs seems like extreme overkill, but YMMV.

I went back to the drawing board again. I tried to incorporate some of what I saw in each of the builds that you guys posted. What do you think? I'm pretty stuck on getting as many AoEs as possible and the way that I have health slotted. I also want to get as much recharge as possible without sacrificing something more important. How am I on defense? I know that I'm way over on the regen cap. I don't know what to do about that.

Here's what I would do given your parameters. It is softcapped to all 3 positions, 2833 HP (with accolades), capped DDR with stacked AD, and 73% global recharge.

I switched out Soul Mastery for Mu Mastery because it's better for AoE, and Darkest Night would only be used for the -damage because of the softcapped defense. I Picked up Build Up for better burst damage and dropped Breath of Fire because FSC, Combustion, Elec Fences, Ball Lightning, and SC will be more than enough. I didn't slot the panacea proc because it really isn't that good, would just be a huge waste of inf IMO.

Ignore the slots and power levels because I just quickly threw this together.

If you really wanted to you could probably replace the Steadfast res/end with the Numina proc which would free up a slot in Health.
