Hello all Fast question about Hero side AT's?
The least "buff-bot" of the support primaries are dark and rad. All of the other ones have some sort of shield that you should be periodically reapplying to everyone you can. Dark and rad specialize in debuffs, therefore all the powers you pick are helpful solo as well as in teams.
But if you prefer controllers to defenders, then the shield buffs won't go to waste because after level 32 you can buff your pet as you solo.

VEATS go into the above category as well, but I find they're limited in concept (if you stick with their actual in game background) and boring to play untill you hit level 24.
Mind you, when I say this, I say this as picturing the toon in it's own comic.
That said, I find Defenders, Trollers, and Corruptors (and okay, MM's, but the playstyle bores me), to be the best team toons out there for all they add to the team, no matter the combo (though some of the combos the player needs to know how to play...Stormies for one need a good player behind them to be useful imo).
If you want a bit of armor, go VEAT for their team buffs.

An Earth/Kin controller can be very team oriented. All blasters benefit from a team. A tanker is great on a team. So maybe your scrappers are not team oriented, but they are not terrible either.
A Rad/Sonic defender is great teamed and solo.
I enjoy my Fire/Rad controller teamed and solo.
A Fire/Elec blaster is a good mix.
Hmmm. A Claws/Invuln Brute could be cool, they would have good aggro lockdown with some nice range attacks.
Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?
What the hell? Let's buff defenders.
Tactics are for those who do not have a big enough hammer. Wisdom is knowing how big your hammer is.
If you want team support and a mix of melee/range, I'd suggest making a Dominator and taking it heroside. Doms do a nice mixed of damage and control, and their damage is split between melee and AoE.
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
Some other important questions:
How squishie do you want to be? (I love my Fire/Elec blaster, but she breaks VERY easily. )
How long are you willing to wait to become mighty? (Rad/Sonic defender is very good by level 12; Invuln/Superstrength tank can be slow till level 38.)
I'm going to throw out a handful of suggestions. I don't play Controllers, but they're quite powerful (slow starters, I understand.)
DEFENDER: Rad or Dark primary. Secondary, much more flexible (Sonic, Psi are my preferences.)
BLASTER: Fire/Ice, Sonic/Mental, or Energy/Energy. I love Fire/Elec (or Fire/Energy) but they get very nervewracking in the upper levels and you can easily get a deathapalooza.
SCRAPPER: Any/nearly any. Dark Armor is probably not for the novice. Not a lot of ranged attacks in any scrapper.
TANK: I've only played Ice and Invuln tanks. Both have very strong points. Again, not much ranged, and they have a tendency to be understrength on damage and overstrength on defense when soloing. (ie you only die of boredom.)
VILLAIN: Nearly any Brute (I'd avoid Electric Armor, Energy Armor and Dark Armor). The "opposite" of the Defenders for Corruptors, so a Sonic/Rad corr instead of a Rad/Sonic defender [or maybe a Fire/Dark corr]. Stalkers are not inherently beloved of teams. I don't have much Dominator experience, but it may work well for what you want- bit squishie, though. I also don't have much Mastermind experience.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
I'll toss out the Kheldians. They have ranged/melee thing mastered if you're good with forms. A tri-form warshade can go from scrapping it out like a champ in dwarf to blasting for awesome AoE in nova with three fluffy buddies providing support.
I'm totally incompetent and only play humanform khelds, but I've teamed with better players and they are quite cool and do a good mix of range and melee.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

so the main thing is i'm on victory server and hoping I can find something equaly good at range and up close and equaly good solo or grouped but perfering to group thanks in advance and cheers
