Help me figure out my lag please!

If I can play normal again I'll love you all forever!!! I blew out all the computers dust yesterday and it didn't change the lag issue. The temp does go up a little when I have lag. I bought a fan to throw in there, but I am not sure I can install it. It has to plug in somewhere. Maybe it isn't compatible with my system? Says its for a vga card. My graphics card is pci-express.

Your computer is a bit on the weak side, but for a start you should update your graphic drivers.

And can you be more explicit regarding the lag, and how you are observing it.
E.g. if you use the command /netgraph 1, what does the output look like? A nice green 'lawn' or are the red/yellow spikes?
And does the lag also occur if you are solo inside a mission?

How does one deciper the netgraph output? I mean, nice short green lawn is good, but what does one with tall green spikes every 30 sec mean? What do the red/yellow spikes mean? How does one determine if the output they see is with their computer or their network versus a server issue?

I've been playing since I-1 and never could find an explanation on what I was looking at.

the lag is intermittent. I updated my drivers after that post and that change makes no difference. With the netgraph code I have a nice beautiful lawn when it isn't lagging. Then after a few minutes the lag hits and the lawn grows. It's green but more like a long fat rectanlge. No yellow spikes. the ping, send, and recv moves slower too

here is a pic of the graph. Sorry it is huge. I can never remember how to resize

Your lag can be server related.
The servers has been harder loaded than usual, and based on your picture it looks to me like server related lag.
Have you tried going into a mission or logging on another character, i.e. not in Preatoria? - If so, I would expect that you should have no lag.

Netgraph shows (to my understanding) network packets delivery.
Low green: packet delivered as normal
High green: packet delivered, but delayed
Yellow: not quite certain
Red: packet dropped (not delivered)

I'll give that a try. It happens in mission too. This toon is on Protector and this morning there is one one light on the server.

Hmmm

I don't know if your 'location is right, but I just tried to log in on Protector - heroside, that is. And there, there was no log, and my netgraph looked smooth.
So it seems there is something else going on.

Have you tried resetting your router, as in switch off and on?
Have you checked that there are no other applications (running in the background) taking up your resources? - A HighJackThis log might be helpful for that.

I'd second the suggestion of rebooting the router & modem. Here's how I handle that:

Unplug your cable/DSL modem from AC, then unplug your router from AC. Wait 30 seconds or so, then plug your modem back in. When the modem lights steady and the "internet" light is on solid plug the router back in. Wait for the router to self check and light up all it's lights and see if things work better.

I end up having to do that about once a week on my network. I'm slowly starting to despise Comcast.

I'll try that. Comcast did say I would need to do that from time to time.

Don't forget to pull out the back up battery on your modem if you have the digital voice one like I do. Otherwise, pulling out the power cord won't do anything.

Posted

Well I did that and logged on to my lvl 50 blaster/hero. I flew around here and there and was doing great until I got attacked by a herd of monkeys on Monkey Island in PI LOL.

I do have digital voice, but I dont think I can pull a battery out of my modem. There is some button I can press and hold for a while though.

This sucks. I can't play like this. Before GR I didn't lag. I got some during Rikti raids, but I don't think that was this bad.

Would upgrading RAM help? I see that for Ultra Mode they recommend 4gig. I only have 2. I don't really have any money to play with though.

COH will only use 2GB of RAM, however Windows is also using some of that. Upping it to 4GB (WinXP? Or are you using Vista 64 or Win7 64?) will help, but mostly what it'll do is reduce zoning times since you'll hold more of the game in memory and have to load less from the HD. Unless you're running a 64 bit OS there's no point going past 4GB as anything past that won't be used.

Yeah I am on XP. I wouldn't mind loading quicker, but I have a fairly decent load time. It's gotten a little longer with GR though.

Is there anything I can do to my system to help my lag. I really don't want to quit playing.

Posted

The only things I can currently recommend trying to see if they will help is to shut down Google Chrome while playing, and also temporarily disable antivirus running in the background. Perhaps your system was on the wobbly edge of being able to play without bottlenecks and I18/GR pushed it slightly over the edge. Knocking out chrome and AV temporarily might help. It would at least isolate the problem to a lack of resources if nothing else.

You could also run the task manager in the background, play the game windowed, and see if during the lag spikes you also see CPU spikes that suggest something is overloading your PC's ability to keep up with the game.

Siryn, your problem is your laptop can't handle Ultra Mode, you have all the UM settings on their highest, World Detail at 200% and 8xAA.

Also, don't thread jack. Similar symptoms doesn't mean same problem. Start your own thread please.

Yep, probably not the same problem. The 9600 in that laptop has about a quarter the performance of the 9800 GT that Positron said was the minimum card necessary to enable all Ultra Mode settings at reduced quality levels. At the graphics settings listed I would expect very low frame rendering rates. That's not the same problem as apparently being described above.

Dial down settings or disable ultra mode altogether. Frame rates should improve substantially. If not, as Father Xmas advises, start a new thread so the problem can be troubleshooted independently.

ah thread jack is a better term then hijack.

I've been keeping my task manager open the last 2 days and have noticed it spikes a lot overall. It definitely spikes when I play games of facebook.

I updated my sound card drivers. I have a sound blaster 5.1 external (I hate it). I'm going to try getting some more RAM.

Thanks for being civil

I'm not used to posting here and wasn't aware people would get offended. I'm also not familar with computer speak so I wasn't aware it wasn't the same issue.

Again, thanks for not being rude about it. The issue was fixed with the patch from a day or two ago.
