I went to a considerably "liberal" college in Southern California and took one required philosophy course. The professor made it a point NOT to interject his own opinions or "truths," but rather engage the class and make us think about it. He never gave straight answers for anything... and we were all the better for it, in the end.

Obviously some colleges/universities are doing it wrong.

That's more what I had. Disagreeing with the professor was encouraged, but you had to listen to the people that agreed with her as well. The most valuable thing in any given lesson was that you traded ideas.
