Windows 7 and CoH

Installing CoH on a new laptop that runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Was wondering if there are any adjustments that need to be made to the game or Windows. Thanks in advance for the input.

The only issue I've ever had with Win7 64bit is Alt+Tab'ing out of the game. On occasion Aero will become disabled. If that does occur, go to your desktop preferences, and reselect one of the standard desktop themes, then re-enable Aero on your taskbar.

I've not had this issue crop up for a while, so it may have been resolved but knowing Microsoft, I doubt it.

I've not noticed any difficulty with Win7 Ultimate 64-bit.

It appears to break HeroStats if you want to play fullscreen, and similarly, the "game has crashed" dialog box is invisible when it appears -- apparently, nothing else can draw on top of the game's fullscreen display.

I've not had any problems with Win7, except when playing one particular character (who always caused issue with my old comp. I think the character file is bugged.).

But I haven't used Herostats, ever.

Seebs's comment makes me wonder if the Vidiot map patch would work well with it or not.

There's an easier solution to that. CoH isn't really designed to work with Aero, so sometimes it works with it, other times it doesn't. If you don't want it to do the random switching, go into the properties for cityofheroes.exe and change the compatibility option for "disable desktop composition". This way, every time you run CoH, Aero will be disabled rather than needing to adjust your theme every time. I think it also lowers the resources usage of the desktop that Aero can have while CoH is running.

There are no issues with the Vidiotmaps Map Overlay. It just replaces the maps in the game folder, after all. I've never had any issues with using it. Haven't used HeroStats in a long time though, so I can't comment.

Overall, the only issue I have with CoH and Win7 is that I really need more RAM in my computer. So that means... no real compatibility issues that I've seen either related to the OS.

It better not. Aero is supposed to turn off automatically when you pop up a full screen game, then come back on when you quit or tab out.

Unfortunately, OpenGL support just keeps fading more and more. Cryptic seems to have dumped it for Champions/STO. Vista almost didn't support it at all. NVidia isn't bothering to make 3D Vision work with it. Oh well, at least this will encourage NCSoft to make a City of Heroes 2.
