Back after 3 years: WTH is up with my Inv/SS Tanker?

I'm looking for some advice from people who have actually PLAYED over the last 3 years (resubbed last week after that long an absence). I'm enjoying playing my Inv/SS Tanker, but I am sure with the changes over the last 3 years, he could be better. His plan is listed below literally as he is set up now, and have only gotten him to level 38. I have a free respec taunting me each time I log in, but don't want to use it until I have gotten some good advice from the community. Please keep in mind I only have 20M inf to play with, so insanely expensive IO sets are out of the question. I plan on picking up Energy Mastery when it comes up in a couple levels (for CP, FA, and PP).

Well, your build so far doesn't look too bad at a glance, what are you wanting to do with it? Rival a Granite tanker's durability without any of the negatives? It can be done by building for the soft cap as explained in my guide.

20 million won't go all that far in today's market unfortunately, at the time I wrote my guide you could soft cap an Invuln tanker for little over 10 million... nowadays it would probably take on the order of 50-70 million. I can make a few suggestions for priorities though.

First, the Reactive Armor sets will offer you decent bang for the buck... don't feel you NEED the highest level IO's either, slotting 25's is only 0.2% less resistance than slotting 40's and they're considerably cheaper.

The Taunt sets Mocking Beratement and Perfect Zinger are EXTREMELY inexpensive... Zinger does use some pricey salvage but Beratement even uses cheap salvage.

Smashing Haymaker is inexpensive and offers a nice boost to your S/L defense.

The Steadfast Resistance/3% defense unique is expensive... but it's also a common low level drop. I'd run a few Architect missions to gather up a couple thousand tickets and roll Bronze recipes in the 10-14 range... they're CHEAP and there's several winners there including the Steadfast. Vendor the trash and craft & sell the good ones. I typically get a winner out of roughly every 6 rolls. Steadfast Res/Def unique, Steadfast KB protection, Karma KB protection, Regen Tissue Unique... these are some of the winners in that range. Toss the junk and keep the good stuff.

Hmm, well, some of your power choices definitely need work. Tough Hide is a "must take" IMO, preferably before level 30. I'm also not sure why you'd take both Swift and Hurdle, there are certainly picks you could make that would offer more bang for the buck. Once you've gotten Tough Hide, Hasten or CJ would also be good choices. And unless you're really attached to Hand Clap, consider dropping that too; a PBAoE KB power is not very useful when you want enemies close by to feed Invinc.

One piece of good news for you is that you can probably make some money from the set IOs you have already slotted. Keep the Doctored Wounds in DP, but most of the other set IOs can go since they aren't very useful for a typed defense build. Since you can only keep 10 from respec, check the market to see which ones are most valuable.

Call_Me gave some good advice for IOs to pick up; in addition I'd suggest 3 or 4 Eradication for Foot Stomp. If you stay away from the quad they're pretty reasonable, and you can finish out the slotting with something inexpensive like Multi Strike. I like Gift of the Ancients for defense powers; they have nice bonuses but aren't nearly as expensive as LotG.

Even if you can't afford to soft-cap right away, I do think it's probably worthwhile to pick up the Fighting Pool in later levels if soft-capping is your ultimate goal. You can always fill in with common IOs until you can afford the IOs you want.

Three years huh?
Maybe it's not your tanker, but the tanker AT in general. Awhile back, (emphasis on the word awhile) the tanker AT was nerfed. Maybe that's what you're referring to? Because I've just finished getting an Inv/ tank to 50 and there's absolutely nothing wrong with them. If anything, I think it's the best tanker primary in the game.

Ummm...Tankers as a whole haven't been nerfed since ED, and that was everyone, and before that, the GDN, which affected a lot of stuff as well.

Thanks a lot for all the information. Since issue 11 was the last one out when I left, quite a lot did change for my tanker. I'll do some playing with Mid's designer for a bit, since the game will be down the next couple of hours, and see if I come up with any more questions.

On the whole, a very good first effort. One *huge* problem, though, no Rage. SS is built around Rage, and the your damage will be sub-par without it. Since you're soft-capped to S/L and close to it for E/NE, you should consider dropping Unstoppable since you probably won't need it much.

Some minor things:

Use all the Resistance pieces in Reactive Armor, and skip the End and End/Rchg. As it is, you have too much end reduction in both TI and Tough and too little resist enhancement in Tough.

UY is overslotted; the .63% F/C def is totally not worth slotting for, and just having 3% Psi resistance is pretty much useless. I'd use one of those slots put a fourth slot in Weave, which will put you over the ED cut-off for defense, and give you room for 4 slotting a set later if you like.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Hover for tanks. As Call_Me mentioned, you won't be able to use Foot Stomp when it's on, which is a deal breaker for me. I think you'd be better off picking up Air Sup instead.

Here's what your build would look like with the changes I recommended:

Hello,

I was wondering how I can put up my build on the website? I want to see if you can rate my tank like you've rated the inv/SS tank.

Thanks!

First, if you haven't already, download and install Mid's Hero Planner from this site:

http://www.cohplanner.com/

Then recreate your current build in the planner. Once it's done, use the "Forum Export" option to copy it to your clipboard, then paste it into a message on the forum and ask for comments. Starting a new thread would probably be best.

Some general advice regarding invuln

If you don't plan on taking Resist Elements or Resist Energies, reconsider doing so. Last year they were both given a substantial buff, both in numbers and functionality. In addition to higher Res numbers, Resist Elements now gives you Slow protection, and Res En gives you End Drain protection. Not 100% worth but a good deal of resistance against things like Carnie death auras, Caltrops, and a few other things you see late-game.

Also, if you want to plug your Psi-hole (hehehe), you need to invest a lot more energy into it. One IO for 3% isn't enough. But if you're willing to make some slotting sacrifices, you can achieve set bonuses get about 25-30% Psi Res and Def, which is quite respectable. Pop an orange or two before going up against psi foes and you'll be all set.

I'll agree with Resist Energies taken late in the build (in the 40's usually... CMA has it at 49) but Resist Elements is still highly skippable even with the (minor) slow resistance. Sure it can be useful, but a high end Invuln build now is so tight that there really isn't room for it without sacrificing something that's more useful.

Or you can simply build for the typed S/L/E/N defenses and get roughly 25% Melee/Ranged & 20% AOE defense as a byproduct which will apply to most psi attacks. That's worth roughly 50% Psi resistance according to the 1% def = 2% res formula and it doesn't cost you anything from your build, you get those bonuses as a result of building for typed defenses in S/L/E/N and taking and slotting Weave, the Steadfast 3% def IO and Combat Jumping.

Psi resistance bonuses are worthless in my opinion for two reasons. First, you really can't get enough to be worthwhile without sacrificing other aspects of your build. Second, Psi is very rare in the game as it stands right now so I question just how much of it you'll face. I've never found Psi to be all that dangerous to an Invuln outside of maybe 6 missions in the entire game.
