Out of the 4-star swamp

I didn't think it was possible. They said it couldn't be done. But last night someone rated my ancient arc "The Doctor Returns" 5 stars, and it miraculously popped out of the 4-star bog of oblivion and rejoined the rank of 5-star averages on page 3 where it always belonged.

Edit: to add that the arc has been at 4 stars average since about a couple of weeks after MA launched.

Gratz! It can happen. It's just rare. I hope this happens more and more.

Yay! That's great Fred! Let's hope it lasts. I have an arc on that 4.5 cusp too and it pops up gets a play or two before it gets a 4 star and drops back to 4 star hell again where it sits for months with no plays.

Grats! I hope it stays there too!

So that's why the four-months that "The Amulet of J'gara" sat on page 4 came to an end, apparently it was Fred's turn.

What? Me? Uhm, no I haven't yet... My time's pretty limited, but I'll try to get to it tomorrow morning after server X-ferring some toons.

Sorry Fred!

As we all know a big part of the problem is how badly unbalanced the lower ratings are compared to the 5 star ratings. This is of course compounded by the fact that anyone can rate your arc no matter how well they understand the system or even if they don't play the arc.

Today I received a 1 star rating on "A Hero in Need...is a Friend Indeed" because "Killed before finished loading at entry.". 170 other plays and not one has had this problem so the odds are it was some set way high of the difficulty scale who didn't realize the arc is rated for 5-14. Other low star ratings have come from such silliness as "the spawns were too spread out" or "too many bosses". Frankly, it is astounding that any post I15 arc stays at 5 stars for any length of time.

Well I didn't get time to finish it, I'll be doing that tomorrow. Looks fine so far, just one mish left.

This. I've never received a ticketless rating with a comment attached. Every single one has suspiciously been right after an arc reached 5 stars. I also find it very suspicious that Fred's arc got knocked back down to 4 stars the very next day after it reached 5 stars.

I generally hate to fall into possible "conspiracy theories", but I've seen this stuff too (one of my arcs at five stars for about 30 plays then zap) and I'm starting to wonder...

Why see a conspiracy? There are enough people playing the game to guarantee that sooner or later you'll get lowballed, and unless you've got so many fives that a shift is impossible, at some point enough people will lowball it for it to drop.

I think what 5 is talking about is the correlation between an arc reaching one of the first few pages in the listing and the inevitable 1 star rating that shortly follows. I certainly can attest to this phenomena most recently with Old Dog, New Trick. Before it got close to the top of page 4 it had gotten only 4 star and 5 star ratings running about 85% being 5 stars. Then 2 1 star ratings with no comments and into 4 star hell where it never gets played. I have seen 1 stars when they reach that point with all of my arcs and very few can survive that sort of hit. Even if it does not drop the arc right away, it usually lowers the average close enough to a 4.5 rating where even 4 stars pull it down into 4 star hell.

Which arc is that..and more importantly are the tickets good??? Don't care a flip about XP, I care about Tickets and a good story

The theory in vogue last I heard was that people who've made farms (or heck, maybe just anyone who wants the tickets for their own 5-star arc) will go through and low-ball other people's five-star arcs to kick them out of the running.

I could see that happening; I can also see a small number of lulz-seekers just doing it from time to time as well, sans grand conspiracy; after all, this game has how many players and how many 5-star missions? A 5 star mish is an easy, visible target.

Then I can also toss in the occasional "I not good at computers, Y do this do these thingz?" bad player who gets himself ganked just inside the door of the first mission and then ragequit and one-stars you for his own stupidity.

So - could be a conspiracy, or partly one, but yeah, I have my reasons for trying to avoid falling into that trap 100% (altho Wrong Number's experience is troublesomely hard to ignore).

What this really boils down to: yes, we could just getting low-balled "sooner or later", but ultimately if that small, small percentage of random haters/dumb players and other bad seeds mentioned above can pull almost any arc down from five stars, then our bell curve is deformed at one end, which means the mechanic needs another look-see by the devs.

Which means DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Just hadda say it...

In other news, people are jerks. Film at 11.

There is no conspiracy. Just a bunch of jerkwads. They don't so much keep Atlantis off the maps and keep the Martians under wraps as griefed Atlantis into oblivion and convinced the Martians that the human race isn't worth their time so they went home. Thanks jerkwads, you probably cost us the cure for cancer and infinite clean energy.

Where am I going with this....oh yeah:

This. With a side order of DOOOOOMMMM.

Also, you should play Fred's arc cause he put Fusionette in sewage. And the bugs made me giggle for some reason. It's a pretty good arc overall too, I'll have to put it on the list for the 1-50 in AE thing.

That was my favorite part too!

Strongly composed and executed arc, definitely worth a your time and five stars.

Didn't even register that way too me. Either Fusionette simply doesn't bug me as much as most players or I've run too many Abandoned Sewer Trials to notice.

As a Blaster player I find her an affront to the AT. She makes the rest of us look bad.
