Anyone have any thoughts or ideas about how well this will work/not work? I'm thinking about building one, but unsure of whether or not it will be a good time investment.

Just 4-slotting Dark Regeneration, and one of those slots is Damage, and none for Endurance Reduction?

I've studiously avoided these Mids builds- am I reading this wrong?

All I can say is do a search for Dark Armor Sucks? It is a somewhat lengthy thread iirc, but scan through and he posted his build somewhere in there. I would post it myself, but seeing how it isn't mine to post I better not. Granted he appears to be a real good player regardless, but the things that tank does is impressive.

Hopefully Dechs will be by himself to make further comment, and IIRC his signature Dark tank is also Dark/Fire so he should have a lot to say. However, I'll give you the major things I see on an overview of this build:

  • Dark Regeneration. As mentioned above, this power needs better slotting. This is probably the single most important power in Dark Armor. I strongly recommend you pick up a Theft of Essence: +Endurance proc for this power, as it helps immensely with the high endurance cost. You'll also want at least some endurance discount in the power itself. This should not be slotted as an attack. The damage is minimal and not the point of the power in any case.
  • Level-Up Build or Respec? This build takes a number of powers in an odd order. If you plan to respec into this at high level and never do any lower-level TFs with it that would require you to exemplar, that might be okay, but even so you're delaying a number of key powers quite late. For instance...
  • Obsidian Shield. This power is your protection against status effects and also gives heavy psy resistance. You are delaying this until level 35 and I wouldn't take it much later than level 12. You're also waiting quite a long time for Death Shroud, which is your damage aura and will be helpful in holding aggro.
  • No Knockback Protection. This is a big one. Obsidian has a hole where KB is concerned and you want to plug that right away. You should seriously consider getting Steadfast Protection, Karma or Blessing of the Zephyr -KB IOs. Most Tankers go for twelve points of protection, which means three of these IOs somewhere in your build. Without adequate KB protection you will have trouble tanking for teams, not to mention difficulty positioning yourself for Dark Regen.
That's the big things I see thus far. Also, while you have soft-capped S/L defense, you may want to consider aiming for more E/N defense as well.

As others have said, there are definitely some issues here.

Ob Shield is your mez protection and should be taken by the teens, at the latest. I'd also take Death Shroud much earlier--early twenties would be good. The Fighting Pool can easily be delayed until the 30s to make room. Cloak of Darkness can also be delayed until later in the build.

You're also very low on attacks pre-twenty. If you delay the Fighting Pool, move Fire Sword up much earlier. I'd also take Incinerate and GFS as soon as they're available.

Most of your toggles are overslotted for end reduction. Don't bother with the end or end/rchg IOs in Reactive Armor or LotG; using the Def-Res/End and Def-Res/End/Rchg is sufficient end reduction for them.

However, your two biggest end users, Dark Regen and Death Shroud, are extremely underslotted for end reduction. DR doesn't need damage, it needs Accuracy, End Reduction, Heal, and Recharge, so slot accordingly, As others have mentioned, the Theft of Essence +End is a good choice for it.

The Oblit set is very low in end reduction, so having two attacks and Death Shroud slotted with it is likely to be a problem.

All the attacks slotted with Kinetic Combat are underslotted for Accuracy and Damage, and need another slot each.

If you're determined to soft-cap S/L, I'd recommend picking up CJ. With that, you can drop some of the Oblit sets and use Eradication instead, which has a nice E/NE def bonus. (and since you only need 3 Erad slots for the bonus, you can add end reduction, too.)

Here's what I would do with your build. I dropped Soul Transfer for CJ, but you could always drop something instead else if you want to keep ST. This build is soft-capped to S/L, has 36% E/NE defense, the attacks are slotted more fully, and I increased the the level of end reduction in several powers.

EDIT: Whoops, brain worm. Forgot to add the Steadfast +Def and KB protection. This build has just four points of KB protection, which will keep you safe from most KB. However, if you can find the slots and influence you may want to consider picking up one or two more KB protection IOs.

I made one after watching Dechs video. Hes 33 atm and very fun. Im not commenting on the build because the others are spot on. I cant wait til i get the epics and IO this guy.

Yes, my Dark Armor tank (that sucks) is Dark/Fire, but I really don't have a lot to say. You guys covered pretty much all the things I would.

Very much the case. Energy was a damage type that seemed prevalent enough to cause me problems, so I found it worthwhile to softcap that position too. I sometimes wonder if I went too far over the top.
