Edit: Well, I tried it on a few teams, got a bit of progress. Then Virtue went on a crazy RWZ raid marathon. I only had to stick around for 3 - filled the last half of my progress bar long before the third raid ended. These were raids with 6+ teams, so there were a lot of people to heal.
I'm going to ask a dumb question. 
What's the autobot do?
I've been playing forever, but I saved makin' a base until only recently. I have NO idea what I'm doin', but I sure have a lot of storage.
Does the autobot make the crappy base rez better? Please say yes....
The auto-doc sells small green & blue insp. You can (if I remember correctly) also sell enhancements, recipes, & salvage. can be useful while in a TF since you cant talk to other contacts.
According to the P-wiki page about the auto-doc, it's like Chuggernaut says... kinda limited version of a vendor.
The Robo Surgery is the item that slightly improves the med unit.

Crap, I mainly play melee. How is a bullet-headed thug supposed to get heal credit? Does dull pain count?

It sells green & blue inspirations as mentioned and it will pay vendor prices for recipes and salvage. That comes in quite handy since in almost all cases vendors pay more for common IO recipes than the market does... I don't even bother looking; I just sell off any commons I don't intend to craft.

In fact, one of the easiest ways to get the badge is to get Longbow Warden 2 and set up in an Arena. Someone else would have to explain how, I've never done it.
And if you're in a co-op zone, the villain and hero are .. well, cooperative, if not comrades, and as long as it meets all the same requirements as healing a hero (has to be some damage an you only get credit for damage healed), you can do it.

Well, once upon a time, you needed to heal 1 billion points for the Empath badge - which I got on my scrapper long before the requirement was lowered. Now that the requirement is so much lower, I could have gotten Empath the way I got the first 3 badges (and almost the 4th one) - using Aid Other. Sadly, the method I used doesn't work any more.
I would go to RV, get a Heavy and have it take out a pillbox, positioning it so that at least 2 turrets were shooting it. I would just stand in the shadow of the pillbox and heal the Heavy.... and heal it... and heal it. I took out over 3,000 turrets that way (around 800 pillboxes, back when you needed 1,000 for the final badge).
So..... I think patience is a big factor also.
