Has there ever been any talk about a speedster power set?

I don't mean the travel power, either. I ask because the Flash (Wally West, though I am enjoying Johns run on Barry... I always thought the DC universe was better served with him dead, but I digress) is my favorite hero. Waid and Johns runs were quite epic.

So yesterday I made my first attempt at building a speedster on Virtue.

To start, I went with a blaster, electricity/electricity, but honestly, that isn't what I wanted, but it was the only way I could think of to convey what I wanted to convey.

I am thinking more of a Melee type thing, but obviously with super speed. Heck, the Flash's attacks could be similar to how they were in DCU VS Mortal Kombat. For defenses, sort of like super reflexes, but instead of ducking and weaving, he'd jerk around a lot, here one pico second, there another, sort of thing. They would be able to run up the side of buildings or across water. Maybe do a ground vibration attack or a dual spinning arm induced tornado attack.

All I know is I forgot how much I hated flurry until I put him on my new guy, which immediately takes him from being practical, to a concept character, since flurry barely damages minions 2 levels below me.

What do you guys think? If this has been done a million times, I apologize.

It would be nice, but I think a speedster powerset may be a waist of resources, considering many people make them already.(including myself)

Here are some suggestions for you:
Ma/Sr
Elec/Sr
Ma/Wp
Elec/Wp
Elec/elec
Ma/elec
(all scrappers, if your more ranged, Dp something could work.)

Edit:Also, walking on buildings can't be done in the current engine, I believe.

Goodbye. Not to the game, but the players. Goodbye. Everyone, remember to have fun. That's all I can say.

Did you take flurry on yours?

No. I waited for Sands of Mu.

Isn't that just a temp power though?

A permanent one comes with the 12 month vet reward.

Hmmm I should have that one I believe. Maybe I missed it?

If you didn't look before selecting, you may have chose ghost slaying Axe instead.

Hmm, I have a speedster type character. Name's The Golden Jett. I made him an elec melee/shield def scrapper. Also took super speed, triple slotted with the Celerity set, swift and the prestige sprint quick (I think)

Ah well, you win some, you lose some. Has anyone ever made flurry worth while?

I'm not sure if that's possible.
But for future, reference, Sands of Mu is the better of the selections.

Ok, thanks. My new guy is only a level 8, maybe I will come across it at some point. Thank you! I just love speedsters in general. Was actually going to put one in the comic I'm writing eventually.

You've probably thought about it, but you could just remake the toon.

This is really going to sound odd... But for my "Best" super-speeder I used Fire Blast and Fire Manipulation on a blaster. Then colored her flames to match her gloves and sleeves fairly accurately.

Gave the very -loose- illusion of her fist hitting the target from a long distance, the idea being that she dashed to and from the target before the "After image" reached them.

Yeah, I have. I went from lvl 1 to 8 in the sewers in an hour, maybe less. May just do that. I was really hoping though someone would say "If you 6 slot it its worth it" but I get the feeling it isn't.

Pool powers are intentionally weak. The only time you should take a pool power attack is when you need to take it to unlock a useful power.

E.G. You have to take boxing or kick to unlock Tough and Weave.

I would disagree slightly with this in one situation. For a Controller taking Air Superiority or Jump Kick as a fast recharging third attack makes soloing at lower levels a lot easier and with containment the damage is decent enough.

I chose a WP/EM tanker for my speedster for concept reasons and I do have Flurry. I mainly use Boxing, Barrage and Energy Punch in my attack chain with Flurry on auto fire so that she is always throwing punches. The idea is that she doesn't hit super hard she just hits fast and often.

I think most everyone has some kind of super-speedster type character.

Mine is a MA/SR scrapper (and also the very first character I ever made in game), with lots of run-speed bonuses. He currently runs at approximately 50 mph without super speed being activated.

The trouble with a "real" super speed powerset is that it really can't be done in game correctly.

The animations would be really difficult to "get right" (you'd need the blurring, zipping back and forth over the combat area to show super speed melee, etc)

Everyone wants the "run on water" and "run up the sides of buildings" effect on a super speeder. Trouble is, in game, the maximum speed cap for running is ~92 mph. At 92 mph, there ain't nobody running across the water, much less defying gravity and running up the side of a wall...at least not by pure speed alone.

Oh, and Flurry is a pretty bad attack. It's not the total gimp-factor that it's usually described as, but it's not very good either. That's mainly due to the animation time (imo). If it's animation could be halved or it's damage brought up to respectable levels for the animation time...

Make it a single target version of Shadow Maul/Sands of Mu. Slightly less damage and get rid of the melee level cone, or cut every other frame of animation (or whatever) and get it's time down to 1.7 seconds or less, and it would be an acceptable (if still a little sub-par compared to Air Superiority) attack.

The other issue is the amount of coding needed to make running on water and up buildings possible is fairly prohibitive.

I'd honestly be happy if they halved the number of attacks, doubled the damage per attack and increased the chance to stun. Fewer attacks would call for a shorter animation time and the damage, while effectively the same, would appear more impressive. The increased stun would give the power more utility.

Oh yeah, lose the super speed hum and switch out the punching sound effect for the one used by Shadow Maul.

For my Impulse homage, Headlong...

...I went with a Dark Melee/Willpower Scrapper. Along with my vet Sands of Mu, Shadow Maul has the same ani so stringing them together really gives that Super-Speed punching feel to me. I also concentrated on recharge bonuses in the build to make all the other attacks come up as quickly as possible. I didn't even bother with Flurry because I had two like it, but better. I do have to handwave/rationalize about half the primary's powers though ("oh, I'm...um, stealing your speed and freezing you in one place", etc.). Man is he fun, though. I try to play him as spastically as possible (as befits the character) and when he talks, I type him like this "Ohboythisissomuchfun.Lookatthatguy, manisheuglyHEY LOOKSHINY!"

Dec out.

That is awesome. I sincerly LOL'd when you told me how you role played him, because that IS Impulse of old! He looks great! If they made a Flash movie, that's how he'd look.

I think there is a need for a speedster powerset.

My Speedsters were Kinetics Defenders/Controllers, who used Siphon Speed to get unsupressed superspeed in combat. This felt great (especially with Sands of Mu), except for the fact that Kinetics forces you to stand still near enemies to heal of buff yourself rather than keep moving.

I'd love to gte a melee oriented set that gave the same feeling.

I wrote up some ideas here last week for superspeed (and other movement-based sets):

Recently I made one, Ultrasonica, she is a elec/elec scrapper.
I think Lighting rod is the best power for and speedster, but the rest of the attacks are kinda slow, and nothing really cool at all.
Maybe I will reroll her as kinetic when GR comes out, once I see the attacks.
Few years ago, I had a dark melee speedster, and was really cool. Very quick and powerful attacks. Also I got vet Sands of mu (Pity we dont have customization with this), and dark melee can look really cool with bright color effect.
