Farmer Brute Powersets

So, here's what I'm thinking right now. I'm wanting to make a Brute that can farm like a beast. So, I'm looking at AoE and survivability.

Now, I already have a kickass BS/SD scrapper that farms pretty damn well, but I notice that they can die really quickly. I also know that fiery melee has better DPS than most other sets. After looking at other posts, I've narrowed things down.

For my primary, I'm either gonna go: Fire melee, or SS

For my Secondary: Most likely Shield defense

Any suggestions, tips, concerns, or arguments for or against about those would be greatly appreciated!

Specific questions:
-I'm particularly looking at the secondary. Would it be more survivable, or is there anything better for farming?

-And if I were to change the secondary, am I making an error in thinking one of those two primaries is the best?

You don't have to look far to find other threads about this.

ss/fire, ss/sd, elec/sd or even fire/fire

I know, I've seen tons of posts about similar things, but they tend to go off on tangents, or simply state that SS/? is the best, or something random like that.

But besides saying Footstomp is great, I haven't seen much evidence of WHY SS is so good for farming. Other threads I've seen, say that fire melee is the highest damage set for brute, period. So how could SS be better?

Also, is /fire very survivable? I've heard it's really squishy.

2. Electric
3. Fire

Top secondaries for Brute farming, arranged in order of effectiveness.

3. Fire

There you go.

SS is best because of Rage. Having what amounts to a stackable perma buildup is stupid good. Because Rage boosts EVERYTHING, it boosts the Patron AoE, as well as any other AoE powers you have(Shield Bash, Damage Aura's, etc)

Fire's survivability is pretty average once you get tough, and IO'ed out. Healing Flames makes up for alot of it's squishyness issues, but as I already stated, Fire is only the third best for Farming. Shield is best due to Against all Odds and Shield Charge, with electric taking second best due to Lightning Reflexes, Energize and Powersink.

Okay, so it looks like I'll go SS/SD

Now what I'm looking at is the patrons and the actual build itself.

I'm hearing Mu mastery everywhere, so I'll assume that. And I already have a REALLY good build for my BS/SD scrapper, but I'm gonna guess that it wouldn't translate too well to a brute, right?

If anyone would wanna post a great build up, I'd be REALLY thankful. If possible, I wouldn't mind having a nice expensive build to work up to and a more cheap alternative for the meantime, too, or something.

Hope that's not asking too much ^_^;

I opted to roll a SS/Elec. I think I read somewhere here on the board that there's a Shield Defense nerf coming, namely Shield Charge. Is that true?

Maybe.

Castle confirmed in a thread on the Scrapper forum that Shield Charge is not doing what he intended it to do (and what he thought it was doing). Specifically, it's dealing way more damage than he thought. He hasn't said exactly what he is going to do about it, instead saying that whatever he does, it's going to take time and careful consideration.

It would take a truly unprecedented nerf to make Shield Charge a bad power. It would take more than the complete removal of Shield Charge to make Shield Defense a bad set. I wouldn't worry about it.

People on test have already confirmed that it's been nerfed, but not "Energy Transfer" nerfed. It deals less damage to people on the edge of the AoE.

Hmmm... AoE defense looks a little low, no? I mean, I need to be able to do teams and regular stuff with it too, and there will always be AoE >.>

Don't wanna sound ungrateful, though, it IS awesome! (I asked for a build, cuz frankly, Mids confuses me >.<)

Have to agree with Candlestick. Rage is what makes SS great. You get +80% damage to everything. While FCS does to slightly more damage vs FS with rage, many people forget to factor in the bonus damage to patron AOE attacks like Ball lightning and Elec Fences when they compare sets.

Also there is that extra 5' range on FS that many seem to dismiss as well.

And the Knockdown that increases survivability. Heh, then again, it also allows you to slot the Force Feedback Chance for Recharge proc if you choose.

Seems like a decent place to ask my own question: My brother recently soft-capped his SS/SD Brute, but is having trouble finding a farm mission. The Liberate the TV farm sucks for him 'cause of the stacking Vengeance. Where might he find a better one?

Edit: I'll see if I can get him to post his build here, for ya'. It's pretty sturdy, but doesn't have much +HP or recharge. On the plus side, it wasn't terribly expensive.

You are going to want to build for recovery, use the base +recovery empowerment buff, team with a Kin, or bring lots of blues, because SS/Shield will absolutely wreck your endurance bar. It's an effective farming combination, yes, but I've got a friend who gave up on using his simply because no matter how much inf he threw at it he just couldn't handle the endurance usage (having to bring blues instead of greens and reds slows down your kill speed, really). It's do-able, but be aware that the combination's very endurance-heavy.

Outside of MA you aren't going to find much. Nemesis are the best thing you can get redside (well there's that Snake farm from Grillo but that gives just about everything trouble if they're not chomping inspires or buffed to the gills).

With Nemesis, the trick is to bring oranges (since your defense will be largely negated) and greens, and try to save the lieutenants for last.

If end and resistance are a problem, wouldn't it be considered imperative to take One With The Shield? It increases regeneration and gives 20-something percent resistance >.>

Posted

Yes, but adding yet another end crash into the mix will make matters worse.

Rage crash + Hasten crash + OwtS crash = poor blue bar

SS/SD being so end heavy is more a function of SS Footstomp being end heavy and having a power that crashes your end every so often without a way to regain it. /SD is actually very endurance efficient. /FA has Consume to help out.

Okay... I can see that. So what about this build, I noticed one attack is completely unslotted, and there's still the matter of low AoE defense. I want to be useful in not JUST farming. The farmy-er the better, but it should still be effective in teams >.> *is totally picky* <.<

Posted

I have a SS/Elec/Mu brute that does ok at farming. The biggest issue is recharge times on AoEs. Therefore if you can figure out a better set for fast recharging AoEs or just more AoEs( maybe mace or fire) you may be able to out DPS FS+ Rage.

If you are up for farming AE I'd run 271212.

This isn't my brother's build exactly, but it's sort of close. It is soft-capped to the three positionals, has moderate recharge (56.3%) and decent recovery. My brother's build on Live has more, but he doesn't have Ball Lightning.

You are not going to want to skip Ball Lightning in a farm build.

Okay, so I got a few people to look at the build, and another build someone threw at me, in game. We pieced it all together, then added a few new things, and we think it's do-able. Can I have opinions?

Of all the brutes i've ran solo for farming id say Elec/Fire melted through the enemies the fastest.

Back when AE was... different... could hit ticket cap in a mission (cap was about 1500) in under 5 minutes.

just take a tray full of purps with you

Have an SS/Invul that has alot higher survival rate, but the /fire gets a self rez so no big deal.

Also tried SS/Shield, elec/shield, SS/fire
