INV/SS Tanker build, looking for thoughts and suggestions!

Hello!

Last night my Invulnerability/Super Strength Tanker hit 50 (my first Tanker to do so), and now I plan on IO-ing him out and turning him into a machine of survivability by hitting the defense softcap on as many damage types as I can manage, with a lesser focus on Regeneration. In the end, I'd like him to be built for tanking the tough challenges like Lord Recluse on MoSTF runs, but also be great for general play (and Hamidon raids).

This is the build I've cobbled together, I'd appreciate any tips or suggestions you guys might have in improving it.

You'll be missing quite often without Rage, I think. Kinetic Combat is only around 22% as far as accuracy goes and I don't see any accuracy bonuses from sets to help with that. I know Tanks are damage sponges, but it's no fun if you can't give it back now and then. Unfortunately, the only way you could fit in Rage would be to drop a passive.

Or SJ, or Unstop, which the OP probably won't need if everything is soft-capped.

But I agree, not having Rage is a huge problem, especially since all those attacks with KC sets are underslotted for both accuracy and damage.

Soft-capping is great, but there are some things I won't trade it for, and adequately slotted attacks is one of them. My recommendation for the OP is to prioritize as follows: 1) TAKE RAGE! 2) soft-cap S/L 3) make sure most, if not all attacks are fully slotted 4) soft-cap E/NE 5) soft-cap F/C.

Most of those goals are quite achievable, but the OP may end up missing the soft-cap for F/C. Personally, I think that's a perfectly reasonable trade-off.

Here's what I would do with your build; I dropped Unstop for Rage, but you could drop SJ or ResEl instead. This build is soft-capped to S/L/E/NE, nearly so for F/C, has Rage, and the attacks are fully slotted. It also has better regen--that Numina unique was pretty much wasted in Dull Pain. Note that although I usually don't recommend using Mako's on a typed build, but it was necessary here to soft-cap E/NE.

Thanks Finduilas, that build does seem a fair bit more well-rounded. I've run the tank to 50 without Rage, didn't miss it before, but I didn't take into account the loss of effectiveness from the IO slotting.

I have to wonder though, with just barely hitting the softcap, how will that hold up against Lord Recluse, or even Romulus?

What specifically are you concerned about? You're soft-capped with one foe in range, so you'll have 45% defense when facing a AV without minions. And defense above 45% won't help you against them unless they debuff your defense. (Which is why it's such a good reason to take RPD and Tough Hide, since between them you'll have a fair amount of def debuff resistance.)

Finduilas, that's a great build. Do you mind if I convert it to use as a build for my Invuln/Stone tanker? My tanker is only soft capped to Smashing/Lethal with one enemy in range, and isn't quite soft capped for the other defense types.

Sure, be my guest! With Stone, you probably won't need the Mako's set and BotZ to soft-cap E/NE, since you'll have more than one AoE power to slot Eradication in. And as long as you have the 3 sets of Reactive Armor and two sets of KC, you'll still be soft-capped to S/L. Good luck!

EDIT: NVM, I forgot that Fault doesn't take PBAoE sets. So the build would work as is for Stone, though if you take Hurl Boulder slotting Thunderstrike will also give you some E/NE defense.

Defense debuffs were my concerns, specifically, as well as just what 45% defense would mean against a +4 AV. A bit more research and your assurances have cleared that up, thank you!

Playing with the build you suggested a bit, and going off of some advice from some friends, this is a modified build we've come up with - I'd love any further thoughts you may have!

On the whole, looks fine. However, keep in mind that 6-slotting Foot Stomp with Eradication has its drawbacks; it won't be doing full damage except when the proc hits, and it's very underslotted for end reduction. That may not be a problem with the additional recovery in Physical Perfection, but it's something to keep in mind if you start running out of end when using FS a lot.

I'm hoping the additional +End and +Recovery will help balance out the endurance issues. I'm currently running him with only one SO for end redux in that power and with only Stamina and Physical Perfection for recovery, so it shouldn't be too much more of a problem. And when things get iffy, I'll have Conserve Power to fall back on.

Should also add that whilst mine doesnt rely on defence, it has a enough to mitigate a lot of attacks and can still cap on higher spawn counts, lower mob numbers shouldnt be giving you grief anyway.

If you do manage to cap defence though (I cant find my other build where I did that) I recommend taking aid self as well with one interupt IO in it because it helps loads when your not being hit

I might as well throw my Tanker build out here and add to the pile.

My main goal with this build is to basically turn foot stomp into a jackhammer, give K.O. blow a little bit of use into its Hold function, and be soft capped against solo AV.

I haven't been concerned with taking the energy mastery. My recovery and regen may be low but its nothing some blue and green ispr. cant fix occasionally.

Plus I still have my "oh crap!" button just in case.

Edit: this thing is also Extremely expensive.
