That Nostalgia Thread
We all get nostalgic sometimes right? Here we're just going to take turns talking about something from back in the day that meant something to you. It can be anything; toys, tv shows, music, movies, whatever. Think of it as our own VH1 "I Love The (insert decade)"
|
Oh Angry, what a great idea for a thread! I think this is a great memory that a lot of people can relate to...
As a little child, seeing that first sight of the Christmas tree on Christmas morning with all the wonderful surprises under it! This has got to be one of the closest things to real magic I will ever experience.
Many things worth doing in the world had been declared impossible before they were done.
What a great memory, Miss Healix! RAWR!
For me, it was really neat being able to go to some of the early comic book conventions and meet several of the greats (many -- if not all -- who have passed away).
I got to meet C.C. "Captain Marvel" Beck, Martin "Green Lantern" Nodell, Will "The Spirit" Eisner, Hal "Prince Valiant" Foster, Zack "Smiling Jack" Mosley, and Roy "Buzz Sawyer"/"Wash Tubbs" Crane.
I even got a 1947 Doc Savage pulp magazine for a quarter!
The biggest thrill for me, though, had to be meeting -- and INTERVIEWING! -- Walter B. Gibson, writer of the vast majority of "The Shadow" pulps.
I was a VERY nervous 16-year-old, and asked Mr. Gibson if I could interview him for my school newspaper. He very graciously agreed, and we found a relatively quiet corner of the busy convention floor to have our chat.
When I had finished with my questions, I looked up and we were surrounded on all sides by about two dozen people, who then started asking him questions (thus adding to the Q & A I could put in my article).
In fact, one fellow (who turned out to be the author of "Who Was That Masked Man?") actually wanted to *buy* my cassette from me (before it had even cooled down)!
Good times! Good times!

I miss the summer of 94.
I miss the summer of 95. That was the best year of my entire life to date. It was me, my older sister, and my two cousins. We were inseparable. We did everything together that summer. Going to movies, having water fights, going to the local arcade, playing video games at the crib. Not proud of it, but we tried weed together (don't do it no more though ), went to whatever fast food joint we were craving together. Man damn I miss that. That was just a magical summer in a magical year for me...Now I'm all depressed
The Summer of '89 was probably one of my best years.
Summer of 1990 destroyed a huge chunk of my life, so Yeah... '89 was good.
Lets see... how about some of my memories of summer '73-81:
I remember the sweet taste and gum-like texture of lead paint. Yeah... in retrospect, that may be the reason I can't remember 1994. Pins and smoothies! Nothing but pins and smoothies... and I think I graduated from college, moved to another state and got a video game job in '94 too. Anyway, back to 1973 through 1981.
I remember my grandfather's Saturday afternoon MoNsTeR-bUrGeRs. They had home grown fried onions and green peppers in them. I swore I'd hate 'em (my mother was a vegetarian) but now I'm craving one in the worst way. Getting me to eat one was my grandfather's ultimate revenge against his rebelling daughter (my mom). That's what happens when you try to feed a me a tofu NOT-dog!
I remember staring for a billion years (five minutes) at a hot bowl of white rice and gravy with a dash of salt and pepper cooling on the windowsill until someone said it was okay for me to NOM NOM NOM!!!!
I remember cartoons on Saturday morning that WEREN'T targeted toward action figure sales, but I DID have the Jetsons' first episode on one of those big, red 78rpm records that I played on my RCA record player (BACKWARDS! Muahahahahaha! Cough! I'm okay). It had the Jet Screamer episode on the flip side. "Eep! Opp! Ork! Ah-Ah!" (What are you youngins lookin' at me like that fer? It's on Youtube!)
I remember wearing a cape (beach towel), super seeing bug eyes (swimming goggles), and a headband that held the two antennae (dandelions) in place. I was... <<Bug-Man>>!! Protector of the Tiny! Just don't let a bug land on me or you'd see a screaming tornado where once stood a weird looking kid.
I remember standing too close to some kid's uncle in a public pool one day and getting caught in his Nerve Gas Attack FROM THE DEEEEP! I nearly drowned while trying to get away because I slipped, fell under water and had to be revived. Out of that experience, I manifested the ability to draw in large enough amounts of air to belch entire commercial jingles with near perfect musical accuracy. (Come get me ladies!)
I remember working for an entire day on some guy's ice cream truck and eating more Astro-Pops, Push-Ups and Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake Pop-sickles than any one kid should eat in a year. Now THAT was a fantasy that went HORRIBLY wrong... not just for me but for the truck owner who thought he'd have a shot at dating my aunt before that happened. I remember purple vomit on our poodle. It was a great day.
I remember getting hold of a megaphone which I used to burp the alphabet all over the neighborhood.
I remember my first and last boomerang whose maiden voyage was a one way trip onto the roof of the neighborhood's "crazy lady".
I remember my first and last wind up flying toy pigeon whose maiden voyage was a big loop followed by a power dive onto the roof of the neighborhood's "crazy lady".
I remember my first and last flying ring (basically a flat miniature hula hoop) whose maiden voyage was suddenly assisted by the wind which took it... Yup!
I remember my first and last bully who broke his back trying to climb on the roof of the neighborhood's "crazy lady". I remember one of the paramedics using a ladder to save the bully and to collect all my stuff for me. I remember getting blamed for that bully getting hurt while trying to get and keep my stuff. I'll never forget my grandfather giving those things away as punishment.
I remember my grandfather telling me (years after he gave my stuff away) about how nice a certain lady used to be before I was born, started burping commercials, got a megaphone, unintentionally waged war with boomerangs, flying rings and mechanical plastic flying pigeons, and allegedly masterminded the near demise of my nemesis in pursuit of my toys on her roof.
Oh yeah... and apple pie with ice cream for dessert (and breakfast if I got up before everyone else).
Have a great summer everyone! And if you happen to find a faded plastic mechanical wind up flying pigeon in a box in your basement or attic, take my advice and fly it in the desert.
I miss '88 ... Freshman year in high school. The 1st time I played a keyboard. A REAL keyboard, I mean, not some piece of crap Casio. A friend of mine had a Korg Poly 61 and he taught me how to play Love Walks In and Dreams by Van Halen. Oh man, I loved the sound of that synth. I am still on the hunt for one to this day ...

@Philly Guy, if you use music software, Korg has a synth plugin but I think it's just static samples that emulate the 1990's boards. And HEY! My favorite keyboard was a Casio CZ-230S and I still have it! :P Cassie is 21 years old! Yes, I name my synthesizers. Doesn't everybody?
and to tie that into the thread...
I remember the day I got that Casio keyboard. I played the Van Halen "Jump" keyboard solo over and over for two weeks straight. My poor parents. I think I'll watch some '80s music videos on Youtube this weekend for some real Nostalgia. First up will be Ah-Ha, Quarterflash, Hart and Men at Work. I'll call it, "Mullet Mania 2010!"
I'll have to look into that software. I like that old analog board, though lol. I have an old Ensoniq SQ-80 that's about 24 yrs old. One of the 1st digital synths out. Her name is Baby. I wonder if I can find Korg sound cards for my Roland Fantom ... *scratches head*
As for Jump, I'm quite proficient at the intro and keyboard solo, it's just the middle parts of the song that mess me up.
And when I diss Casio, I mean the old ones with the small keys and the crap sounds.
Hey guys, I had those too growing up... first my Dads mini-casio, I thought it was the neatest thing besides my speak n' spell. I still remember the auto -tune, and then when I was 12 I received a Yamaha keyboard that had over a hundred options for synthesizing and demo-recording and sheesh it had it all! Made thousands of Prank-Calls with that thing!! oh lol! It lasted until I let my kids have it a few years back, its well destroyed now, we have a new one tho!
Nostalgic Memories bolded!
I still to this day have a Casio SK-1. It technically isn't mine; I borrowed it from my cousin and she never got it back. But I used to make mad music with it back in 1998-99. I would feed bits and pieces of music from my tape player into the sampler and make original riffs with them, then record the riffs into the tape player, then take THAT riff and play it back while recording another one and do it over and over until I had a complete song. And I made some tight s*** too. Nowadays I f*** with FL Studio, but I'll never forget that old school low-quality music I made back then with just two tape players and a Casio SK-1.
Going to the beach nearly everyday all summer, packed coolers of food, friends, family, different beaches , parks, running after the Dickie Dees...begging your parents for change at the sound of a dickie dee approaching... not wearing sunscreen and being okay, getting an allowance spending it all with my best friend at the corner store on 1 cent candies, and endless sleepovers, secrets, and conversation.
*sigh*

[I'm assuming that Dickie Dee was an ice cream vendor, like Good Humor. Penny candy? YAY! I used to buy some penny candy on my walk to school, then sell them for a nickle each to the other kids. 3 candies bought me a 12 cent comic and paid for my initial investment, too! Good times, good times! RAWR!]

I'm nostalgic for the summer of Star Wars, in 1977. <_<
Only one movie, merchandise was still at a minimum, and no lousy prequels.
I couldn't get the Kenner toys (like most people, as they didn't make that many at first), so I did what I could with Legos. Of course, actual Star Wars Legos wouldn't happen for many, many years. =>_<=

+5 Interwebz for ya, Miss Early! That sure brought back memories!

edit: the actual truck ones didn't come out until a little later.
I remember when actually owning a computer you could program in BASIC was a remarkable thing that put you at the vanguard of the elektronik supersonik future. I probably had more fun with the Vic-20 than with any other computer I have owned since then.

Now THAT is something to remember!
